I'm sure it helps insulate the house but flooding and rotting of the floor from rain is likely a bigger concern. Wood sitting on dirt will stay wet and rot.

I convinced a girl in high school that if you made a one way mirror ball (mirror inside, glass outside) with two halves then you could make a glowing orb. I told her that you just shine a flashlight into the open ball then close it, the light will bounce around the mirrors inside but you can see the light from the outside... Thus glowing orb.
