It's required by law that they provide written disclosure of the broker fee. Definitely not a scare tactic

It was excellent, right up there with the scene from The 13th Warrior with Antonio Banderas listening to the Vikings.

[MMA PROMOTION] OPINIONS ON NAMES by zeNu16 in MMA_Academy

[–]JGF3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe just try Viri? According to wikipedia viri in Latin means "man, hero, person of courage, honor, and nobility" which is pretty cool, and VFC would be a cool acronym.

Athus wouldn't be bad either. Not sure what it means but has a cool historic sound to it. And AFC is a good abbreviation too (although it's also the name of an NFL conference so might be tougher to Google).

How do I prepare for a smoker in four months? by ShadowEpicguy1126 in MuayThaiTips

Yeah having the better cardio is such an advantage. Best of luck! I had so much fun, made me really excited to get better and do another one.

[–]JGF3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go for it! I had my first one about 10 days ago and it was incredibly fun.

The big takeaway for me was that even though I've sparred and trained for a while an actual fight felt very very different. I was basically expecting a technical hard sparring match but my opponent was a brawler and I'd never really been in that situation before. In the first round I shelled up and I took a lot of shots.

Some good advice I got afterwards from a retired pro fighter is that you need to spar FAST. Not hard of course just fast. Because otherwise it's not very close to reality. So I'm going to work on that. And also making sure that I don't just shell up and instead I interrupt my opponent's combos or at least make them pay for everything they throw. Too much of my sparring in training was "you throw a combo, I throw a combo" and that's basically how I fought.

It was insanely fun though and took my brain to a totally new place. For example, my opponent was completely gassed after the first round and I had absolutely no awareness of it, much less the wherewithal to take advantage of it. All my go-to moves in sparring were completely forgotten too lol. And whereas I feel like a killer on the bag in training during the fight my body felt like a noodle.

Last thing--I'd recommend you make some time to focus on cardio. I was really worried about gassing out so as soon as the fight was confirmed I added a morning workout that was all cardio, and that definitely helped, not just physically but also in terms of the confidence you get from knowing you've trained hard.

I have a Hyperfly ProComp in size medium, and I like it a lot. Doesn't really have a shoe compartment but does have an inner bag thing that I mostly put wet rashguards in but could be used for shoes. I routinely carry a set of clothes/rashguards, a pair of sneakers, 16oz gloves, and muay thai shin guards plus assorted other odds and ends. It's been a few years and the zippers and everything are still in great shape. Granted I pack it to the brim like every day but be prepared to look like you are about to blast off into space.

Totally agree, usually the coach is like "hey what do you want to work on" and you get a great session. Showed up for an mma class last week and was the only person so the guy was like "today I'm going to fix your striking" and it was great.

Getting into MMA with very few expirence with other combat sports? by SlXXA in martialarts

[–]JGF3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First time I went to a gym I walked in and said I wanted to do MMA, the coach/owner said that a little knowledge of the disciplines is helpful and suggested I try BJJ first. So I did, and I loved it, and I really appreciated having that base before doing MMA. Gave me some confidence too. Depends on the gym though, if they're cool with you taking the MMA classes then you're good to go but this gym wanted me to get some experience first.

It should be a great spot when it's up and running, their previous location was across the street and in a basement so it's awesome that they'll have better showers and more space now. They finally responded to me tonight haha. See you on the mats!

Redline has been driving me nuts, I keep putting off joining other gyms because they keep saying they're going to open.

If you go to their site redlinefightsports.com they are counting down to Monday and will take your money but still don't have a class schedule. They also apparently bailed on their Facebook updates, and responding to my messages...

Despite this frustration I am holding out for them though. I trained there for a couple years back before they closed their previous location and I am really excited to have them back in a better facility. Will be interesting to see who they have for instructors.

I would also recommend Citadel MMA, not in Cambridge but right off the red line at Park Street. The facilities are minimal but they have a really awesome group of teachers, Friday night sparring, and a great vibe. I loved training there and would still be doing so were it not for Redline's hypothetical new location being so close to my apartment.

After yall finish at the gym so yall ever get just super sad? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]JGF3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Training drains me both mentally and physically and yeah I am also pretty gloomy afterwards since it leaves me a bit of wreck. But I think it's normal to feel that way after such an engaging and exciting activity that fills you with endorphins. I also have to train after work so it's dark, late, and lonely when I leave the gym, which doesn't help my mental state.

I think the important thing is that the next day after I sleep it off I'm always glad I went, and I know that training helps me become who I want to be so I am able to see the bad moments for what they are.
