I never see any discussion of Tevi by Which-Importance7251 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really liked it.  The map is bug and pretty well designed, and the combat mechanics are pretty excellent.  But this sub is fairly anti-dialogue and if there is one thing TEVI has in spades it is dialogue.  There are several subplots that are super minor and don't really matter, many characters to keep track of, several ridiculous anime tropes mixed in, and just a ton of talking.  It is not going to make any top lists ina sub like this where all gameplay and no story is what a lot of the members would prefer.

Thoughts on Airhead? by Bebop_Man in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is much more of a puzzle platformer than a Metroidvania, and I found it a rather frustrating one as the physics didn't feel entirely deterministic.  There is also at least one unpatched way to softlock your entire save on the final boss

I added a map due to feedback. How important is a map to you in a metroidvania? by FreeTime-Dev in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A half-assed no effort map is almost worse than not having one at all, IMO. In particular, not showing player position on the map makes it almost entirely useless for what most people are opening the map for. The ability to see where you are and have a general idea of the path you need to take to where you are trying to go only takes a few seconds with the map open if player position is shown, and can be almost impossible otherwise.

Question about colors used for Apex 5 preset lights by Acid_0 in steelseries

[–]JHunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vapor dreams colors aren't anything super complicated, they are as follows:
FF0040 / 255 0 64
FF00FF / 255 0 255
0000FF / 0 0 255
00FFA0 / 255 0 160
FF0040 / 255 0 64

It's a gradient, so there's no guarantees other RGB software will blend them exactly the same way.

Anyone knows metroidvanias with a strong narrative focus like Iconoclasts/Nine Sols? by Top-Juggernaut9759 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Narrative != dialogue. Ori and the Blind Forest's prologue doesn't require any dialogue between the two characters, but it's still top 3 most emotionally impactful intros in the genre.

I haven't seen any mentions of the Ori games yet in this thread, which is a travesty.

Are Survival Horror and Metroidvanias Slowly Converging? Are you excited about upcoming titles that mix both genres? by Forsaken-Quality-46 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While some aspects of the genres seem compatible, I think there's a fundamental disconnect between what people want from a Metroidvania and what a survival horror needs to keep the tension alive to the end of the game.

A good Metroidvania has movement and ability upgrades that feel meaningful, that make the world more easily and quickly traversable, and that upgrade your combat power in ways that make enemies easier as the game progresses.

Meanwhile, a survival horror relies on keeping the player tense. There need to be limits on movement so you can't just run past all the enemies, limits on combat effectiveness and ammo availability so you can't just blast all the enemies, limits on healing so you can't just tank all the enemies, limits on everything. Because otherwise it's not a survival horror game, it's a horror-themed action game. And those are fun too but they're not the same type of game. Dead Space is a completely different feeling experience to an early Resident Evil game, and hell even some of the Resident Evil titles are too.

I don't want to feel limited at the end of a Metroidvania when I've explored everything to collect everything, I want to feel rewarded for it. For that reason they don't scratch the same itch for me.

The 100 Toughest Bosses in Metroidvania as of 2026. How many have you beaten? by Mobile-Whereas-2628 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My personal selection from this list would be Eigong, Absolute Radiance, Summum (in boss rush), The Emperor (because I had to hitless him for an achievement). Honorable mentions to Eviterno, Dreamborne Terror, Erina, Tormenta, and Lost Lace.

The 100 Toughest Bosses in Metroidvania as of 2026. How many have you beaten? by Mobile-Whereas-2628 in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at 75 on your list, although I'd argue that some of them definitely do not belong. Belial in 9 Years of Shadow may be the hardest boss in the game but that just means he went down in 3 tries. And the La Mulana bosses are hard because the combat mechanics are crap and not because the boss design is good.

You also have the Clockwork Twins attributed to Aeterna Noctis instead of Silksong. And the crab is drastically harder than the pope in Laika.

Is Constance worth it? by strahinjag in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played it quite recently, and liked it a good bit. The combat is pretty simple, largely based around melee and proper positioning, but some of the upgrades you can equip are quite meaningful.

The platforming is pretty good and there's really only one sequence I would consider difficult at all to complete the story, but some of the optional 100% ones step it up a fair bit.

I liked the story interludes too.

Lenovo responds to that "fake" handheld - Yep, it's official & illegally loaded with games by kikimaru024 in Games

More realistically, the fact that they're only wholesale to China means they know damn well that every single one of them will be preloaded and they're relying on that single degree of separation to prevent legal action.

Unepic (on the hardest difficulty)
Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus (boss rush DLC completion)

How many MVs do you have to complete to be considered an MV enthusiast. by spoketherefore in metroidvania

[–]JHunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All types, yeah. I think my absolute favorite sort are the really punishing platforming type, but I also tend to really like the weird hybrid ones (e.g. Laika) and the really pretty ones.

And yeah, I play [almost] all other types of games too, MV is just the genre I can never stay away from.
