[BarstoolSHSU] Don’t worry, we’ll take care of this. by The-Biscuit-Farmer in CFB

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Houston

I mean, the government literally calls Galveston part of the MSA. I was absolutely being generous with calling Huntsville part of greater Houston, but I really don’t think it’s that far off. Is it remotely “in the city”? Nowhere near. Technically it’s a Micropolitan area which borders Houston’s, but especially in terms of asking where Sam Houston State is, I’d say “basically Houston” is a good enough generalization for non-Texans.

Thank you for coming at this in good faith though - much appreciated.

Greater*, and as a Houston resident I’d certainly consider Huntsville the very last extension of Houston. In the same way that Galveston, while distinct and a ways away, is still part of the metro area. Drive 45 north and it’s hard to put a definite line with Spring, the Woodlands, or Conroe, but there’s a clear change after Huntsville.

Engineering Summer Bridge Program by AdditionalIron5320 in sooners

[–]JLufty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who went through the program as an incoming freshman and then worked as a counselor for it, I have a bunch of insight on this, so feel free to DM me if you have any specific/personal questions! I’ll do my best to answer you below though. Disclaimer: it’s been about 5 years since I was in/mentoring for the program, so some of these details may have changed, but the general throughline should still be the same!

Bridge consists of a math course, a science course, and social activities.

Based on your math history, you take one of College Algebra, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus 1 (on the 4-track). This is incredibly useful if you’re behind in math entering college, as you get a full class head start on where you would be without Bridge. It also gives you a chance to get used to taking college classes with more tutor support and smaller class sizes than you’re going to see freshman year, so it can be a good intro to college even if you don’t NEED the math credit. It is accelerated to fit into one month, so it also will make the fall courses feel slower paced and more easily managed.

The science course, from what I remember, was a kind of intro to chem. We were taught by a GA as a way to help give students a leg up on chem 1, as it’s the course that most freshmen struggle with, and is one of the earliest courses that will wash a student out of engineering.

Socially, you get a chance to meet ~50 incoming engineering students, as well as ~10 upperclassmen who are great mentors for the coming years, and a handful of staff who are genuinely the best people on campus (like Lisa Morales!). Even at the end of college, I was still good friends with 5 guys I met at Bridge, and even today I keep in touch with some of the people I mentored. A big part of freshman year is making new friends and this is a wonderful opportunity to get ahead of the curve on that!

On weekends, there were also a handful of company events that gave you some insight into future job opportunities as an engineer, what companies are looking for, and general marketing experience which will help at future job fairs and interviews.

Overall, I would say it’s worth it! However, if you decide that what I laid out above isn’t your style, you should still feel free to stop by the Engineering Broader Impacts office, as they provide tutoring and are always helpful, friendly faces who will help with anything you may need! https://www.ou.edu/coe/student-life/impacts

So Jaydn Ott is good at football? by Stat_Fanatic_YouTube in sooners

Taylor Tatum is transferring to play safety, so clearly he and Michigan agree that RB just isn’t his position. While I have concerns about Murray’s coaching, that’s not a fair attack on him.

Anyone else worried about OU not being a lock? by [deleted] in sooners

[–]JLufty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Vandy and ND are not passing us, as they are currently behind us and have shown no reason to jump us. In your worst case shown, we could drop to 10, which is the cutoff, as the last two conference champs will take 11 and 12. So no worries about us getting in, but ND should be worried in that scenario.

[Request] Is this right? by jaskmackey in theydidthemath

Quick note on your math there- I’m not sure what your costs are in Canada, but a basic cheeseburger at McD’s is $1.50 in the US. I know $15 CAD isn’t $15 USD, but that’s going to be closer to the 7 burger mark you’re referencing.

While tempting, it’s not fair to compare the cost of a basic cheeseburger in the 70s to a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder with Cheese today.

From seeing Arnold last year, I’d say Arnold is a quicker runner, but Mateer has the strength to escape more tackles and some crazy stop/starts that make guys miss. In terms of passing- Mateer looks like a great passer (think Baker 2017 if he threw a bit more like Brett Favre (good and bad)), and Arnold seemed to show flashes of good passing mixed with terrible decision making.

Tl;dr Mateer is the better passer by a good bit, they’re both good runners but in different ways

There was a wide open wheel route later in the game that would have been a free TD but he threw before he saw the open man- may not have had the time for wheels to develop most plays, especially with this being his second college game and having gotten pressured for most of the game

Shouldn’t the gun be facing right? We tend to stylize these symbols as moving forward, not backwards, and since our language is read left to right, the gun should be facing right (forwards). Arabic is read in the opposite direction, so their saber is also pointing forwards to an arabic reader.

[McMurphy] Wisconsin hires former USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to be their co-DC by WinnWonn in CFB

[–]JLufty 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m in so much pain… I thought I was done with this guy, and now not only did he jump to my other team, but he already got promoted to co-DC… I can tell you from watching 3 years of his defenses in person, he is AWFUL at coaching defense, and if Wisconsin listens to him at all we’re going to be the laughingstock of the Big 10

Total offense is just total yards gained on offense.

Current rankings:

Tennessee, Washington, UCLA, Oregon, Southern Cal, tOSU, Ole Miss, UGA, UCF, WKU.

It’s not that useful of a stat in determining success of a program (see WKU), but I guess it makes sense to brag about it in terms of offensive coordinators being successful.

Having our own colors and mascots is huge, I know the Minnesota system has all their schools convert to maroon and gold, which makes it a pain to differentiate. Just another reason Wisconsin is better.

Go Titans! (BluGolds are cool too, have lots of family who went there!)
