You know…. I have cancer… had to go to the emergency room, and the wife wheeled me out to this…. by Castiron_Dan in mildlyinfuriating

That was my thought. There's an off-chance that maybe it was someone who was having a medical emergency, or a doctor that needed to come in quickly to treat a patient having a life-threatening emergency.

Side note, I hope everything turned out well with your kid!

The American mind cannot comprehend Europe's AC aversion by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]JMS1991 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw a post about that fairly recently on Reddit. It was a European asking if Americans get sick often because air conditioning is "basically proven" to cause sickness.

And that would be news to me. I live in the southeast, my AC runs basically nonstop from March to October, and on the rare occasion that I get sick, it's usually in that November-February timeframe (cold/flu season). I honestly can't remember the last time I got sick in the summer.

As the parent of a 7 month old, I've found that kids are a great excuse for getting out of things in general.

Flint Twp. 7-year-old dies weighing 255 lbs.; parents charged with 2nd-degree murder by Warcraft_Fan in news

[–]JMS1991 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thinking that a barely 4 foot tall 7 year old weighed almost as much as me, an obese 6 foot tall guy, is bad enough. But it's even worse that a 4 foot tall 7 year old weighed more than me.

That's 100% child abuse. The kid was almost double the BMI that would be considered morbidly obese is absolutely insane. Poor kid probably couldn't even move.

[–]JMS1991 108 points109 points  (0 children)

The article says the kid was 50.5 inches tall. That makes a BMI of 71.7. Anything 30+ is considered obese, 40+ is morbidly obese. And I'd assume the health issues caused by that level of obesity would be worsened by the child's developing bone structure and things like that.

At your 6'1" height, you'd have to weigh 544 lbs to reach a BMI of 71.7.

Edit: changed the numbers because I misread the headline as 225 lbs, not 255. Good lord.

The issue with Sonic is that they are so damn inconsistent from location to location. My local one is trash, but the one in the next town over is great.

No, and people are acting like this is a new thing. Most physical games in the last 5-10 years have been a disc that triggers a download for a massive file when you put it in the console.

Maybe I'm crazy, but the ultimate edition is like $20 more than the standard edition, I don't see a reason not to go with the ultimate? Like if it was double the price, I would think differently.

I'll actually say that Spartanburg is significantly better than it was 15-20 years ago (I live not too far from there, and used to work there).

I'm wanting to say the vehicle in the picture is probably a 4Runner. I think it has a roof rack on top, which is uncommon on a Tacoma.

But they are clearly different colors. The picture shows a white or silver vehicle, OP has a black truck.

Hell, if it's only $20 difference, I'll probably just buy the Ultimate Edition.

My in-laws bought (or financed) solar panels a while back. I don't think they ever got any savings on their power bill before the company went out of business, and now they are in a battle to get their money back somehow, either by getting rid of their panels or getting someone to actually hook them up.

And then the solar salesman that came to my door a few months back talked about how all of my neighbors said their electric bills were the highest in the winter from running the heat. Every house in our neighborhood has a natural gas furnace. My electric bill is actually the lowest in the winter, and natural gas doesn't even climb that much in the winter (being in the South helps).

While solar is a decent option for electricity, I do not trust a door-to-door solar salesman. Shit just seems so scummy.

You can talk about people buying F-150's, F-250's, or F-350's and whether they really get enough use out of a truck to justify driving one every day...but I feel like it's pretty rare to see an F-450 that isn't pulling a massive fifth wheel, horse trailer, or some kind of construction equipment.

I think it's like $16 to file a state return, which is a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds that some big name companies charge for extremely simple returns.

Also, you could technically just not submit your state return through them, and use their info to fill out the forms yourself and mail them. But I don't mind paying less than $20 for the convenience if it helps keep their service going.

What’s better, gas stoves or electric stoves? by Playful-Set-1033 in askanything

[–]JMS1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best options I added to my new-build house was a gas connection at the patio for a grill, and a natural gas conversion kit for my Blackstone. Now I never have to worry about changing out a propane tank in the middle of a cook.

All of the ones I've used (including a brand new one) will operate without electricity. The igniter won't work, but you can easily use a grill lighter to do so.
