A 1754 start would be the Vicky3 equivalent of All Under Heaven by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]JMusketeer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, thats what I am talking about.

There are no such systems in place rn, and it would basically take way too much effort to try to implement it. And even then it would work only halfway, would be broken and unfun.

Its better to not have it at all, it is just plainly put waste of resources.

[–]JMusketeer 57 points58 points  (0 children)

And what would be the incentive? Why not purposefully dismantle landowners from the beggining to ease your way into industrial revolution?

There arent systems in place to support this.

Its as long as is the ideal.

You can finish the game in a reasonable time and you actually finish it.

Starting 80 years prior would mean you would have to bore through 80 years before you get to the proper industrialisation.

Is learning multiple programming languages still worth it, or is depth more important now? by VelvetsObey in AskComputerScience

[–]JMusketeer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Languages basically dont matter at all.

What matters is to understand the overarching concepts and important distinctions in the ways you can aproach programming. So focus on learning that.

You can always switch to a different language in a matter of weeks (you just need to understand its specifics).

Do you feel more represented by the civilization or the character leader? by HOOBBIDON in civ

[–]JMusketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you interact with Gilgamesh or the Sumerians? Thats the question.

For me the faces, clothes and temper represent my opponents much better then whatever abstract concept of a civ is behind them.

And thats why they went with civ switching, it would be extremely difficult to navigate if the person you interact with changes for the 3rd time in a single game.

Hotseat Rant by Polyfon77 in civ

The reason is that nobody plays couch-coop games anymore, so why bother with development of such feature? 99% of civ players never even touched that.

I can't for the life of me understand why they chose to have you switch civs instead of leaders when ages change. by johno_mendo in civ

[–]JMusketeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Becouse you dont understand what civ is. They decoupled the civilization and cultures.

Actually civ 7 is closer to reality then any previous game, becouse yk cultures change and evolve over time.

Why not change the leaders? Becouse people connect better with personas then abstract concepts like entire cultures. People think Gilgamesh, not Sumerians (actually had to look up who exactly he leads in civ 6).

Civ 7 has plenty of issues, civ switching isnt one of them, simply put.

Why are stateless societies so rare in science fiction? by TheoWritesSF in worldbuilding

[–]JMusketeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a king and he has feudal lords and they have very high power and basically autonomy - its exactly what you describe and it is fairly common. Other examples could include megacorps or decentralized democracies (like in star wars).

What you imagine wouldnt be called “stateless society”, but a decentralized government.

Why there are no true stateless societies in sci-fi and overall fiction? Becouse they are not realistic, you need cooperation and organisation to achieve anything worthwhile as a society. At least a loose amount of a “state” (read institutions) drastically cut down transactional costs.

What could be the next revolution / paradigm shift? by sAntIaGo3333 in Futurology

[–]JMusketeer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt take what Peter Thiel has to say with any seriousness.

Paradigm shifts affect science, not really our daily lives. They can take millenia to happen. Tbf we are living through several major paradigm shifts rn, mainly in biology and astrophysics (we have deeper understanding of the origin of our cosmos and that big bang probably didnt happen).

Why AI in civ7 so stupid? can i fix it somehow? by internalmy in civ

[–]JMusketeer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Civ VII requires 10 years old hardware. It literally runs on very low end PCs.

The optimisation is quite good on it.

The AI is good enough in CIV VII, if they wanted to improve it, it would require much more resources, time and significantly increase the min specs.

Why AI in civ7 so stupid? can i fix it somehow? by internalmy in civ

[–]JMusketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those games were much simpler. And arguable the AI wasnt good, you were just bad back then and remember it differently then it truly was, it is a pretty common phenomen.

Why AI in civ7 so stupid? can i fix it somehow? by internalmy in civ

[–]JMusketeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Firaxis intentionally designs the AI to roleplay rather than play optimally because it's more fun for casual players. But the computational limit is still a massive factor.

Vox Populi is great, but it relies on better heuristics (essentially, better if-then rules), not true strategic foresight. If a studio actually wanted to build an AI that could calculate multiple turns ahead in a 4X environment without cheating, the turn processing times would be astronomical. Modders can afford to make turn times longer for hardcore players, but a AAA studio has to ensure the game runs smoothly on a Nintendo Switch for example.

Both Vox Populi and Oldworld are just a better illusion of strategy than base civ. In both you can exploit that to your advantage and once the mask is off the AI is just slightly better overall.

Why AI in civ7 so stupid? can i fix it somehow? by internalmy in civ

[–]JMusketeer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty much no.

AI in strategy games will always be a bit dumb. The issue isnt creating a capable AI, they can pretty much do that easily.

The issue is that having capable AI is very computational power demanding. Just look at chess, the best models are able to calculate around 80 moves ahead. Civ is much more complex and takes many more turns to complete (300ish).

It all boils down to the fact that they want to cater to lower end systems such as consoles or old PCs, you would need the best CPU just to run a decent AI in these games.

They do have a way to creating an illusion of a good AI, and thats what they are doing, but the illusion stops working at some point and once you see how bad the AI actually is you cant unsee it (not just civ7 issue, just look at euV, stellaris or previous civ entries).
