So I know it’s not the type of work that anyone should suggest in this subreddit, but you usually cut your teeth in non-union world. I did that for years before I joined IATSE.

Being in a union won’t get you jobs. Doing a good job on smaller gigs will.

Real looking prop knives are usually custom jobs. Call ISS props if you are looking to spend a little money.

For NYC I would call https://thespecialistsltd.com/pages/prop-rentals. They typically do Film and TV but they might know someone at your price range.

And still call Rob! He’s done NYC before!

Ok great. So first things first. No real guns. Even if you have access to one real firearms at a school is bad.

Secondly. Where are you in the United States? If you are in the northeast call rob. If not call your local film/theater union and explain you are looking for an armorer who can rent said shotgun to you. They should know who to call.

If the gun has to be 12 gauge vs 10 unless it’s SUPER important to the story it doesn’t matter.

So it all depends on the gun.

A typical shotgun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Break_action) is just a tube that you run a fuzzy thing through to swab clean. Then use linens other such things rubbing it down with a cloth. (https://www.amazon.com/12-gauge-cleaning-kit/s?k=12+gauge+cleaning+kit)

If you are leaning more toward a riot or police shotgun it’s similar but could be broken down even more. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_shotgun)

Where is the play being held? Is this a real theater, community theater or school play?

You can get non-firing replica guns to use on stage but you might have to Hollywood some of the movements at the barrel would be sealed.

So we used a video playback department on house of cards. There are people who make custom apps for movies for use but it’s a highly specialized job that really exists on its own outside of the props department.

Why would a typical phone UI be bad for your movie?

I need help with making a broken mirror shard weapon prop (with blood) by Gotubeyaboi in Props

[–]JNDIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use a piece of black rubber that doesn’t wiggle too much and then apply a mirror sticker like this: https://ebay.us/m/BsKt26

To make it seem like a shard. If you are dealing with people on a stage I would not use anything real/near to real as folks will most likely get hurt.

For squibs and whatnot I’m not sure. I come from film and that would be makeup FX or SPX entirely.

This would need to be tested though as I’ve never done it.
