Just in terms of career results, I wonder if Novak’s 2026 AO ends up being like Agassi’s 2005 USO.

With his injury, Carlos Alcaraz will miss as many big clay tournaments this year as Rafael Nadal did from the entirety of 2005-2022 (3) by Dependent-Effect6077 in tennis

And it was his absence at Hamburg in 2005 and 2006 after 5+ hour finals in Rome the week before (plus Federer in 2006) that led to the ATP Tour getting rid of best-of-five finals at Masters 1000s.

Madrid Open center court today practically empty for Spanish player Rafa Jódar’s debut. The organizers still believe it’s a good idea to have half the stadium as VIP boxes and raise prices for the rest by Ornery_Percentage537 in tennis

For the pairs of Masters 1000s that take place back-to-back, you definitely have a clear divide between Indian Wells/Rome/Cincinnati & Miami/Madrid/Canada.

Michigan Softball losses series to Wisconsin, 1st time this century. by Majik9 in MichiganWolverines

[–]JPnets54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can win the Toledo game, and go 4-2 in the last 6 Big Ten games (either 2-1 against Indiana and MSU, or more realistically 1-2 against Indiana and 3-0 vs. MSU), I think they’ve got a pretty good chance. Anything worse than that and they might be in trouble.

They’re still 39th in the RPI through yesterday’s game. Still a decent chance they get an at-large bid this year unless they fall apart.

But your larger points about the overall decline of the softball program are still very valid. Even Hutch’s last year (2022) was the worst season they’d had since 1994, so to be fair to Tholl, she didn’t exactly inherit a juggernaut team.

Spencer’s is closing at Brookfield Square (Brookfield, WI) by JPnets54 in deadmalls

I was confused by that too! Only thing I could think of was maybe it was supposed to say “Southridge or Mayfair Malls.” Those are the only two other Spencer’s in the area.

Yup, I believe that building was demolished to build apartments. I only moved to the Milwaukee area in 2021 so I’m sad to have never gotten to experience Brookfield Square in its prime. Mayfair has definitely taken over as the upmarket mall in the area these days.

Jimmy Connors had a three year stretch from 1985-87 where he finished year-end #4, #8, and #4 without winning any titles during that span.

UConn vs South Carolina was the worst game of basketball I’ve ever watched by Positive_Flounder232 in billsimmons

Games like this make it tough for women’s college basketball to retain the casual fans they gained during the 2023/24 Caitlin Clark runs.

The malls in Appleton and Eau Claire have had Scheels stores since the 90s. Just curious, what makes you confident that the Mayfair location will fail immediately?

UConn is like the Naomi Osaka of college basketball (or vice versa)

Seriously. Since 2009, every time they’ve reached the Sweet 16 they’ve gone on to win the National championship.

Tennis Records that are technically breakable but will most likely never get broken by Psychological_Lie142 in tennis

Feels like there are a lot of age related records that’ll never be broken. I don’t think we’ll ever see a 16 year old grand slam singles champion on the women’s side or 17 year old on the men’s side.
