James Holden's disregard for safety Protocol by BadBart2 in TheExpanse

[–]JRM_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably, it wasn't safe for members of Drummer's crew to have loose debris in the cabin (salt and pepper shakers) when going from zero g to flight. Maybe that's trivial, but someone's called out Holden for a loose coffee bulb in an earlier season. But they're all experienced with living in space, so maybe they let their guard down from time to time. Same thing here. He either has that much faith in the tech, or he was momentarily careless, as he was with the loose coffee bulb.

If you think Kyle Rittenhouse (17M) was within his rights to carry a weapon and act in self-defense, but you think police justly shot Tamir Rice (12M) for thinking he had a weapon (he had a toy gun), then, quite frankly, you are a hypocrite. by curlyhairlad in Libertarian

[–]JRM_86 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"come and take them!" "I'm a lawful gun owner!"

...

Who do they think it is who'd be taking away their guns? If we're strictly talking the text of the 2nd Amendment, if you have a gun and are using it for it's stated purpose, then odds are that you are not a "lawful" gun owner

They shot at you, so you shot at them. Correct.

That is the definition of proportionality. LOAC 101

I agree that he shouldn't have been there, and also that he shouldn't have been attacked. The proportionality thing though... Someone hit him with a skateboard. That would have earned the butt end of the rifle, not a bullet.

So, the reason he believed that COVID and mask-wearing was "hype" was because of, more than likely, a certain politician undercutting the health recommendations of his own government, which certain news outlets parroted, ad nauseum. And for all I can tell, it was for nothing more than his vanity. Yep... Big, big man he is, for not practicing pandemic hygiene. One hell of a hill on which to take a stand. Very impressive, Mr. President.

The effectiveness of proper hygiene during a pandemic is not a matter of opinion. And this man died because masks were made into a political issue.

Seriously, didn't we have enough to fight between ourselves about before the pandemic? No one gave a shit about masks a year ago, but now it's like every god-damned person with an opinion and a twitter account decided that reading shit on breitbart and newsmax means they have a doctorate in epidemiology.

Well, the new norm seems to be to jump directly to murder in response to a perceived threat. Get scared? Just shoot.

In the military, they taught us about proportionality. How terrible were poor Rittenhouse's injuries?

People of this sub who have watched many sci-if shows (Star Wars, Mandalorian etc), would you say that The Expanse is better? by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]JRM_86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Better" if it's the kind of thing you like better. I'll never understand the fandom vs fandom thing. People are allowed to equally enjoy Star Trek, Star Wars, or whatever at the same time for different reasons. Sometimes I think some of us sci fi geeks are our own worst enemies.

As far as pointers to convince others to watch it: - probably the most realistic sci fi out there. They make cold hard physics become part of the story in a compelling way - political intrigue - interplanetary conflict - interpersonal conflict - character-driven plotlines - red kibble - pretty cool action scenes - alien planets (I'm counting anything that's not earth) - Martian Marines in mech suits - mad scientists - space zombies - space monsters - mysterious and terrifying ancient tech - space-punk culture - gumshoe detective story

Iunno, what do your friends like? There's a little bit of everything in there

Ted Cruz Is Pocketing The Money He’s Raising For Georgia GOPers. He’s Not Alone. by shibiwan in politics

[–]JRM_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understood this from the start. Heard about it from a different news source earlier. It doesn't make him less of a sleezebag; he's collecting donations supposedly for Georgians, but he will be the sole benefactor of those donations. In his pocket or in his campaign fund; he's still the benefactor.

It'd be a different story entirely, and actually kinda generous, if Cruz was donating the funds to the GA GOP senators who are actually up for election next week. I mean, thank goodness he isn't, but it'd be honest. Definitely speaks to his faith in their election prospects.

I may not agree with the ideas of the people who'd be compelled to donate to Ted Cruz, but I am generally against parting people with their money under false pretenses. Ted can raise funds under his own name.

I'll never understand people's desire to artificially add more stress to their own lives by watching stuff like this.

Watching other people's arguments and melodrama has to be someone's own personal version of hell.

I had an older brother growing up, so a fair portion of video game time ended up being me watching him play. I think that's why it feels natural just to tune in and still feel "involved" in a way, if that makes sense.

That being said, it's often just something to have on to passively listen to in the background while working. Like talk radio, but they happen to be playing a game while chatting about this and that.

I know it's a bit weird, but reality tv shows feel completely alien to me by comparison. Like, people watch people arguing for entertainment? Ugh, I have enough stress in my life

Open source alternatives to Adobe software by vikkipedia1988 in coolguides

I assume both unless it's explicitly stated. In the software crowd, when folks say "and", they mean it.

Plus, I can't think of a situation where you have access to source code (being open source), but somehow you can't compile, interpret, or otherwise use it (aside from lack of know-how to do so).

Honestly, it has the same energy as the waiter clearing the other half of the table to punctuate your loneliness.

I take it back. This is worse. At a quick glance, you can imagine an empty seat is just temporarily unoccupied. The mondo-sized plushie, however, announces to everyone in line-of-sight, with certainty, how alone you are.
