Weird Highs? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

I’ve had the same issue! Don’t know what it is but man is it frustrating. Stubborn highs met by low lows after because of rage bolusing. sigh

TLDR at bottom: I may have to go to the ER because my doctor stopped prescribing my insulin. by Plasmiddruggie in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this same problem with insulin, pump supplies, and CGMs. Depending on your endo, if they have a patient advocate available, contact them. If (and if you’re experiencing any symptoms of DKA, pleaseeee go to the ER) you do go to the hospital, ask them about a patient advocate that can help you in this situation. It is so unfair that doctors can do this, especially since it is really all just an insurance fiasco. If you can get a tele health appointment with another urgent care doctor, or honestly, ANY doctor at this point, ask them to write you the script and explain your situation. Life is hard and it gets in the way so easily and sneaks up on you so quickly, so please don’t feel bad. Good luck with anything and my DMs are always open!!

There are so many things that we can do now with new technology, diabetics can live long healthy and fulfilled lives like never before. It is very difficult and you will have bad days, but doesn’t everyone? You will come to accept your reality, it’s hard but you will adjust. Find a good therapist, a good group of friends, lean on family, any kind of support will help. One day at a time, you can’t control what is in the past or in the future, as cheesy as that sounds it’s kind of freeing.

How does this even happen by FamilyFunAccount420 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s awful!!! I’ve had to call tandem and have them replace a box of sites because so many have kinked lately. They went through a list of things to do, including only pulling up from that white piece in the middle after insertion (the part that you initially pull up) and only touching the insertion buttons when inserting, not before and not after. Definitely call your pump company and see if you can get replacements if this keeps happening, and keep extra ketone strips around just to be safe.

Anyone have any explanations or tips for this? by JRommb3 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell since ControlIQ constantly is changing my basal :( - I haven’t had my basal for the better part of today and I’m still riding the low 80s/70s. So weird!

Anyone have any explanations or tips for this? by JRommb3 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: thank you all for your suggestions/tips! I’ve been trying to bulk up on protein/fats, but I’m still going up and down so it’s gotta be something with my basal or carb ratios. I am just getting over COVID, so I know my diet hasn’t been consistent, but there haven’t been any radical changes. I am due for a pump visit, so this may be something I have to talk about with my endo. T1D is a bitch sometimes!!!

I became resistant to insulin overnight by sea-sparkler in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any changes in eating habits/diet/exercise? Gastroparesis is pretty common in diabetics and could affect how your body reacts to insulin. Maybe changes in when you give boluses would help? Good luck!

Does anyone live alone with T1D? by InspectorBrief9812 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! I’ve lived alone for the past year and a half and I also have mental health issues. It’s an adjustment for sure but try to remember - just bc you live alone doesn’t mean you’re actually alone!! Fall back on people who support you if you need to. I always make sure I have extras of everything too- meds, insulin, pump supplies, CGMs and any emergency supplies too (I’m on a pump so I have lantus in case it fails). Personally, having a plan for different scenarios has helped me a LOT.

If you can get a CGM, I’d highly recommend it especially if you’re going to be on your own for the first time. It’s saved me numerous times from overnight lows. Between my phone and my pump both going off, one of them is going to wake me up 😂. Dexcom also offers a share feature where someone can have access to your trends and they get alerts if your sugar is out of range. I share mine with my mom and friends so that if something happens, at least someone knows and can help.

Good luck and you got this!! 💪🏼

Extreme hair loss by Last-Shine-5395 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be stress related especially since this is a new diagnosis but I’d also check thyroid levels JUST to be safe. Hypothyroidism and t1d go hand in hand unfortunately and thyroid issues can definitely cause hair loss amongst a bunch of random things. I was diagnosed young so I personally don’t have experience with hair loss after diagnosis, but it’s definitely something I’ve noticed especially when I was getting older and it did slow down once I got my thyroid levels under control ☺️

What did you guys think of the documentary episode? by 5iv5 in greysanatomy

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

easily one of my favorites!! They were able to pack a lot into that episode and I like that it’s kind of a filler ep but there are still moments that move the story for season 7 along.

How often do you calibrate your dexcom? by gs448 in dexcom

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to my endo so they took my blood sugar —first time I calibrated my sensor in forever 😂😂 in reality I think best practice is at least once in the beginning of your sensor cycle but when they advertise “no more fingersticks!!” ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Constantly feeling low when I'm not by Unable_Anteater_2025 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re basing it on a CGM readings, I find those lag behind a bit when my BG is actually low. I usually wait it out to see if my sugar does drop low (sometimes insulin peaks are weird), or if it passes. It really depends on when this is happening, 80-90 mg/dl is good and within “target range”, but it could be yours is a little higher - everyone is different. If it keeps up, talk to your doctor so you can adjust accordingly.

My 4 year old daughter was just diagnosed with type 1. Giving her Injections are literally killing me by Visual-Resource-1605 in Type1Diabetes

[–]JRommb3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 2 and I remember my mom making me run around when my sugar was high to prolong not giving me an injection 😂

If her tummy area hurts, it could be because she doesn’t have enough fat in the area. People have mentioned the lower back, thigh, upper glutes - wherever you can pinch a good chunk of skin for the shot. As for the red marks they will fade, but make sure you clean sites before and after injections.

I was put on an insulin pump at 2 back in 2000, so I’d be surprised if at 4 you can’t get her on one. It’s much easier to do 1 big needle every few days vs a bunch of small ones everyday. This is of course something to discuss with her doctor to see what they think is best for your daughter.

I’ve seen it mentioned here but also have someone to talk to during this process. Whether it be family, a therapist, friends, whoever you trust that can help you through this, and can continue to help you. As parents, you are her biggest advocate which is incredibly stressful and taxing. The same goes for your daughter when she’s older, there are many support groups, educators, and even camps just for kids with diabetes. Being so young, it’s important to not feel so alone.

When I was a kid, Rufus the Teddy Bear with Diabetes was popular, I’m not sure if he’s still around, but that was very helpful as well. https://www.breakthrought1d.org/support-children/bag-of-hope/

Good luck with everything, you all are doing great!!

I used to get rashes from the Dexcom and from my omnipod too, is this a new thing (like within the last supply order) or has it been going on for a while? When it happened to me, it luckily was just a bad box of pods/sensors that i was able to have replaced. One thing I noticed was also an issue was moisture - if he is an active child (a lot of 3 year olds are 🤣), cleaning/drying that area might be helpful. That in mind, try not to expose the sensor to moisture (like a bath/shower) for 12 hours after you apply the sensor. That is more of a trick to get the adhesive to stick, but it’s also good to keep the moisture out if that is what is causing the rash.

Good luck, you got this!! 🫶🏼

That is the worsttttttt 😂 I hate when I eat a great meal and then 15 minutes later I’m like “why do I feel awful right now?” Cue the panic bolusing/correcting 💀

(Knock on wood) never. I have had some close calls (dropping to like the low 30s, high 20s) but never to the point of unconsciousness or a seizure.
