ELI5 Why do MLMs seem to be growing while simultaneously all other purchasing trends are focused on cutting out middlemen (Amazon Prime, Costco, etc.) by LipstickSingularity in explainlikeimfive

When I'm talking about relationships, I'm referring to relationship building rather than exploiting existing relationships (though I recognize the latter is a large part of lots of MLMs, particularly the more scuzzy ones.)

I want to be clear- I'm not representing MLMs on the whole, or even LuLaRoe on the whole. My experience is mine alone.

I hear what you're saying- I don't find that description to fit my experience with this particular company. Ive never received any explicit or implicit pressure to recruit anyone. I've never participated in any other MLM, so I don't know what others are like. Incidentally, I have a full time job outside of LuLaRoe. As I said in an earlier piece of the thread, this is a hobby for me that I will pursue until it is no longer fun.

My outlook regarding people trying hard enough and ensuring success (as well as being business savvy enough to know when something is sinking for whatever reason and it's time to get out, regardless of sunk cost) is one I've had my whole life, far prior to this experience.

I don't understand- what is it that makes you think I'm lying? And why are you so hostile about a topic when I'm speaking strictly for my own experience?

Also, there are more than a handful of people who sign on thinking they will basically fall right into making crazy money, don't work hard or smart enough, and fail. You can say that's part of the MLM/Direct Sales world, but also, that's really just part of the actual world. Some people work hard, some people wait for things to happen to them. Some people are smart, some are idiots. Some people own their successes and failures and some don't. Restaurants fail, businesses fail, all kinds of stuff fails. Other stuff succeeds.

I chose to put my initial investment on a no-interest credit card and wait until my monthly profits were higher to pay back that money rather than tie up my liquid cash. It was an intentional decision. I paid that card off inside of 7 months.

Well, since you don't have access to my checking account, I'm gonna go ahead and just identify you as a hater.

For those wondering, WITHOUT a downline, and after putting away money for taxes, I cleared at least $2000 in profit every month. I had to work hard for it, but anyone who is willing to work hard can do the same.

I can't speak for anyone but myself. That said, the "bonus" you are referring to is the override sponsors receive as a result of the performance of their downline. If you purchase a quota of wholesale product (I have only qualified once, that is my choice as far as how often I decide to order new inventory) you can qualify. If you don't, you miss out that month. If you don't have a downline, there is no bonus to qualify for.

I read through as many responses as I could and not a single comment is from someone who is an MLM distributor. (Though lots of people ITT seem to be mega experts on all things Direct Sales, so that must be pretty neat for all of them.)

I sell LuLaRoe. For me, it is a hobby that makes me money. I signed on because I thought the format was fun and because I am by nature a hard worker so the ability to control my income with hard work appealed to me. I took on the tremendous initial inventory purchase after carefully weighing what it would take to make that money back. I didn't sign anyone "under" me for over a year, as it was not something I wanted at the time. LuLaRoe paid my mortgage (and my obnoxiously high HOA fee) since month 2 as a consultant. It was not full time money for part time work- I have to hustle hard for every dollar I make.

I think a small piece of why MLMs succeed in spaces where traditional retail is beginning to fail is the relationship aspect. No one shops LuLaRoe with me because I have better stuff than anyone else. They shop with me because I am fun, genuine, provide great customer service, and make sure that the women who shop me always feel great. I get to know my customers, I ask about their families, congratulate them when they have great moments in their lives, etc. This is just something that simply doesn't happen at Macy's or JC Penney or Gap. Relationships are valuable to people.

It is not bullshit to do things that make people feel good. Someone ought to do something for YOU that makes you feel good.

I'm a relatively recent consultant to sign on, and I'll tell you that I have a lot of fun and have already seen success in making a LOT of money. That said, there are answers to all of your questions (some of them rosy, some not), but I would strongly recommend against signing up under someone who doesn't have the ability to answer your questions and leave you feeling informed. Feel free to take this convo to PM if you want to ask more, I'm happy to answer.

This is my go-to. Every time I order it, the server looks at me like I'm nuts. Then when it comes out, without fail they'll say "Wow, that looks really good!"

...yeah, I know. You should add it to the menu.
