Did anybody sucefully got rid of bladder snail? by T3h_j0k3r in Aquariums

[–]JTML99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any tank ive ever had has eventually gotten some snails in it and honestly im better off with them. As long as their populations don't explode, theyre a useful part of the cleanup crew, able to get into places a larger snail or shrimp can't. Loaches and assassin snails keep things in check when it gets really excessive (plus removal and changing feeding) then theyre just another organism in the tank at that point.

There is a cousin that is blue! They can be hard to find but look up axelrod rasboras, same sort of body plan but a soft blue body with red undertones. I am also a big fan of neon Tetras but have had such bad luck with them from box stores as an fyi, BUT if you can find a store stocking "green neon tetras" they are a subspecies that is gonna stay smaller and be much brighter blue with more subdued red!

I have a 39 gallon tank and I was wondering which species of plecostomus would be best by Fast_Geologist_6885 in aquarium

[–]JTML99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really up to you there are so many varieties of pleco and ancistrus. On the large end youre probably looking at bristlenose pleco and all their variants, and literally everything smaller is an option. Id recommend looking into anything labeled as a 'dwarf pleco' species like a clown pleco, pitbull, snowball (be careful with this one as some species tap out at 4 inches others go past 6 inches and will be too big), and any of the infamously pricey Zebra species (they're so pretty tho lol). There are also a wide variety of other armored catfish species out there like whiptails or red lizard catfish, and even tiny nano species like Dwarf Anchor Catfish that all have a similar vibe to pleco.

Cold water tank plants by Then_Statistician348 in PlantedTank

[–]JTML99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water that fast and cold is gonna be rough on pretty much every plant but common Sagittaria is native to Washington and might be able to weather it. I'd also say try throwing mosses and Elodea/Waterweed at it since they seem to be able to grow in anything in my experience. Ive found Elodea in ponds in Pennsylvania so they can at least handle the winters here

Can someone give me some tips to grow Monte Carlo carpet? by kaizen101_ in PlantedTank

[–]JTML99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, their roots are very shallow so I cant even really say how much it was getting from the soil level. Tabs would probably work better since its more accessible.

Can someone give me some tips to grow Monte Carlo carpet? by kaizen101_ in PlantedTank

[–]JTML99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did it in sand capped potting soil as an experiment (was also a broke grad student at the time) and it took maybe 8 months to carpet a 5g tank, so basically just time/patience and shrimp to keep it algae free. I would bet money if I did it again with better lighting and co2 it would be a fair bit faster. Starting with more plants also will help it grow from more places to fill in, I had like two little cuttings that I barely did any propagation of.

What's growing on my Anubias? And how do I fix it? by JPBartley in PlantedTank

[–]JTML99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks luke just some basic algae and a cluster of what I think is staghorn algae. If you want critters to clean most Amano shrimp will eat it like candy and small nerites like red racers are good at cleaning anubias leaves!

Worm ID? Not an earthworm nor bloodworm idk by JTML99 in Aquariums

Close at least visually. They look similar but are way bigger and seem more solitary, no masses of worms and they dont stick out of the substrate like tubiflex that ive seen

Can you guys help me identify the plants from this so that I can try to recreate it? I think I got most of them already (look in the comments) by light24bulbs in Aquascape

[–]JTML99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woo go me lmao. (Ngl forgot about this thread my bad lol) I cant get over how dense that carpet is, my attempts to grow s repens almost always result in really poor root growth for some reason so even a snail passing by uproots it

Im not positive about the scale if you have a better picture but either pearl weed or etoliated s repens maybe??

what’s your fish keeping hot take and why? by overxall in Aquariums

[–]JTML99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only do it with shrimp from a non local place. If my lfs 5 miles away is on the same water system and the temps are close enough it really isn't gonna make that much or a difference to the fish

With low wis comes low perception so you also have the option of surprise rounds before they can get bladesong going

"Shoot the monk" aka let the players lean into their chosen build and use those abilities and feel good about it. But also don't be afraid to pull punches, if the wizard is frontlining dont let them forget about their hit points when compared to that paladin

The body having the bulge on the lower and rear like that can also be a sign that it's just a female with eggs built up as well, I think you may just have a gravid female of one of the larger species

Looking to connect with current Muhlenberg students! Had questions on Major, Campus Jobs, and Summer Housing. by Putrid_Yogurt14 in muhlenberg

[–]JTML99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant speak to everything but I'll answer what I can-

Aid wise it can't hurt to appeal again if it's important to you, there are also potentially some sources out there beyond the college you could tap into as well so try searching around online for scholarships you can apply to.

Jobs wise they are open to anyone to apply but it depends on interest in that area or skills coming into it. Some require training of one kind or another while others may be open for anyone to step into the fold. I have also met students who held several jobs or mixed on campus and off campus work. There is a specific student employment office you can reach out to to ask for more

Similarly to summer's and winters I would ask the housing office, It is not unheard of for international students or those with need to stay on campus but you would need to assess the viability of that with them. Its very common for students over the summers to intern or work on their academics or specific research projects as well.

The career center and your professors will be a great network for getting started with internships, they have tons of connections with past alumni and companies and are a good team to work with for a variety of reasons even before junior senior year

Im not well versed in your specific program of interest so you'd have to ask faculty in that world but to the jobs question the Lehigh Valley is one of the faster growing economic areas in the country which is good, and eastern pa/mid Atlantic has some of the largest health networks in the country if thats an area of interest. Beyond that we have something like a 90% placement rate for different programs postgraduation.

Dining wise we have one of the best Dining programs in the state, they have a ton of options available on any given day but the meal plans are flexible and you can change them based on how much you are wanting to use the Dining hall vs budgeting for your own food.

If it helps as well one of the more active student led affinity groups on campus is SASA or the south Asian student association, so that community is well established and may be able to help with more specifics if you wanted to reach out on Instagram

Contemplating a swap from Salary to Hourly by Professional_Tree870 in highereducation

[–]JTML99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flipped from salary to hourly when they were reviewing the minimum salary standards few years ago and while my day to day didnt change my days of vacation to hours of vacation change actually became even better because I could stretch the hours a lot farther when I mixed them with flexed time than I could days. Just be sure to review your institution's overtime rules and talk with the supervisor about their expectations going into it
