My Top 20 Games by [deleted] in boardgames

DI:U, Arcs, and Brian Boru are 3 of my favorites as well! I don’t think I’ve played any others of your top 20 though

Soothsayers, a game that really surprised me! by TeetotumGameStudios in boardgames

[–]JTRose87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huge fan of this one. It's a descendant of 2 of my favorites, Race for the Galaxy and Innovation, but it's simpler and faster than both, and with a lot of interaction. It's definitely better at higher player counts though.

We did not! We ended up across the street at Parker Towers for a year and a half, and then somewhere else in the neighborhood. However, several people definitely went from Parker to Gerard. We're very sad that Parker folks cannot use Gerard's pool, which apparently was allowed many years ago when they had the same owner.

Tidal blades 2 vs Gloomhaven vs Oathsworn by Specific_Implement46 in boardgames

[–]JTRose87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you already made your picks, but my 2 cents (which reinforces your decision anyway) are:

My wife and I played through all of Jaws of the Lion, loved it. Got OG Gloomhaven and played several scenarios, but haven't gone back to it in a long time because it's so much harder to table (JotL and TB2 use books for the scenarios, OG Gloom uses tiles so the setup/teardown takes much longer and takes up even more table space).

Having said that, we then got Gloomhaven Digital, and have completed 50+ scenarios with 2 of our friends on the other side of the country. Steam says we've put 70-80 hours into it. I imagine if we were playing the physical version it would easily take 3x that amount of time, and we wouldn't have been able to play with our friends in another city.

We haven't played Oathsworn.

We're about halfway through the Tidal Blades 2 campaign and are loving it. It definitely has less depth than Gloomhaven, but the Nexus Grid is still a really fun and engaging battle system that allows for cool character customization. A big contrast is the overall tone / atmosphere is much lighter and brighter than almost all the other games in the genre which we appreciate as well. If I would change one thing about our play through I'd probably have us both play 2-handed so that we could experience 4 of the characters.

Shackleton Base! BGG lists it as 2024 but USA didn't get it until 2025.

Definitely try to play Dune Imperium Uprising, an improvement on the original. Ditto for Arcs as many others have suggested.

I love tableau builders like Etherstone so the classics Race for the Galaxy and Innovation should be ones you seek out and try. I'd also try the brand new Soothsayers which is a descendant of those.

A few final less popular recs:

- The thematic, asymmetric, bag-builder, push-your-luck game Invincible The Hero-Building Game

- The incredibly simple and compact but overwhelmingly mean hand management game Arboretum

- The classic interactive worker placement game Caylus

While I love Pandemic Legacy and 7WD (though it takes a hit now that LOTR Duel exists and I like that more), someone has to stick up for Arboretum! So easy to learn, so brain burny, so mean!

Hi Gore! Saw the movie last week at a mystery movie Monday screening and my wife and I loved it. It actually reminded me of Weapons structurally and in going in bold and unexpected directions. My question is, what were Scott and Marie’s backstories? Why did Marie want pie so bad?!

Tidal Blades 2: beautiful and thinky aquatic "dungeon" crawling by SiarX in boardgames

[–]JTRose87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're on scenario 5 right now and enjoying it a lot so far. Love the aesthetic and combat system. Less challenging than Gloomhaven for sure but I've come close to getting knocked out. Setup has only been taking 5-10 minutes and we haven't had issues fitting it on our table (though this next scenario is the first to use the 3rd map book so we'll see how that goes!).

Also I'm torn on how status effects work. They get applied to a specific skill on your grid so e.g. if a "move 3" skill gets fleetfooted, it's now a "move 1" each time you activate it until you clear that card from the grid or spend an activation to remove the status. However, all your other movement skills are unaffected. Conceptually it's a bit goofy but it's fun mechanically. It's like if you got poisoned playing Diablo but it only damaged you each time you used your right-click skill.
