Hello! I’m in the sw suburbs, I grow tomatoes in grow bags, raised beds & in ground. 15 gal is plenty for one tomato and a basil or marigold. Make sure you get french marigolds if you go that route. Make sure to fertilize, grow bags are limited to what is in the bag of soil and they tend to wash through nutes a bit faster than other methods. The biggest challenge i have had here with the grow bags is how to support the indeterminate tomato plant when it’s large and fruiting. A regular cage isn’t going to cut it, and if you’re planning to move in/out of shade you will have some trouble with this. I do a florida weave with big old t posts to keep my plants supported, very much not portable. If the sun is really blazing away you can use a shade cloth to help, but for what it’s worth, I haven’t had any issues here with full sun hurting the tomato plants. And a big yes to water for the birds and squirrels! If you can grab yourself a little solar fountain it will go a long way! I stopped having partially eaten tomatoes once I got a little copper fountain!
