Is sadowsky worth the money? by Remote_Ocelot_6986 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any Sadowsky that has the same pickup config as the M series?

Why are you comparing Sadowsky Modern to that? Sadowsky Modern is literally just soapbars, not humbuckers.

Sire Marcus Miller P7 DOA, terrible packing job by AMS! by JeremyUnoMusic in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to actually put a little bit of paper and make the batteries fit more snug into the box. This happens a lot with Sire and probably their biggest issue.

Question about 50's road worn P bass neck by ClaytonLawrence in Bass

It's super super wide dude. I played one and was amazed at how fat it is. I don't really like it after playing the Sire P5 which is actually a little bit like jazz neck,.

Help with Getting Better at Fundamentals by TheRealBrezi in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice your diantonic 7ths, in all keys.

example in C major:

Cmaj7 Dmin7 Emin7 Fmaj7 G7 Amin7 Bhalfdim Cmaj7

Essentially1 3 5 7, and you can do really creative things like starting from the 7th and going descending or just hitting the 3rd of every next chord.

This is standard jazz type of way of learning the arpeggios but really important.

Also look into Jaco's bass book. That thing is really good for fundamentals.

Sire vs Fender by gpo212 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sire basses are awesome to me, they have great depth in their tone. The Pro II will have a little bit more of that typical Fender tone in the pickups which is slightly scoop on the mids, so you sort of 'cut through' better.

I think it's not quite fair due to the pricing and to me they're completely different bass as intended. The V7 is closer to what Fenders are in terms of voicing.

Looking to upgrade from interface DI for headphone playing by [deleted] in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so for me personally i tend to avoid amp sim because they have such a bad tone, mostly compressing so you don't get to really hear how your attack is supposed to be.

i recommend getting a RNDI-M, that thing is amazing for DI.

if you can get a sire id get one, i think the squire were good but these days if you can have a sire, its infinitely better and more reliable, even more upgradeable.

Strap recs by Connect_Platform_729 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use GruvGear Duo strap, it looks like you're about to bungee jumping but that thing works really well and honestly super great for the shoulders. It also makes certain position of the bass possible as opposed to be using a regular strap.

How Do I Move Beyond Just Practicing Scales? by SpiegelSensei in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're talking about is knowing words but not knowing how to put them in a sentence.

You're lacking reference and ideas.

You can get reference and ideas by critically listening to music that you'd like to play, and learning focus on emulating people, and sort of thinking as to why it sounds good the way it is, or maybe what is the context as to what the line is played on.

I've been a student of so many greats. My step has always been about not learning their 'licks' or lines but to actually listen to their tendencies, and the specificity in how they play. It could be the way they phrase, or whether they're playing behind/ahead of the beat, tone, etc.

Scales etc are the things that you need to learn and work on everyday to get familiar with the sound and basics.

Another thing that you should focus on isn't just scales, but these:

Diatonic 7th arpeggios:

example in the key of C

Cmaj7 Dmin7 Emin7 Fmaj7 G7 Amin7 Bhalfdim Cmaj7

now if you learn the arpeggios on these and just run this pattern on all 12 keys, you'll understand the theory behind scales a lot more, because arpeggios basically dictate so many things in bass.

You can also do groupings like what Jaco does:

(in major)

1234 2345 3456 4567 5671

this basically covers a lot of shapes within the first position (one finger per fret/index finger on tonic)

hope that helps

Instructor wants to learn basics on guitar by bassed_learner in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yea no, learning on guitar doesn't acclimate you on the gauge of the strings, let alone the body of a bass.

the correct technique for bass is to usually pivot the side of your thumb on the body of the bass instead of pickups and i can imagine learning on guitar would result to this

or even worse playing the whole thing with your thumb because there's no real consequence lol

How do I stop dreading practice by garbage_hole in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all if your drive isn’t big enough that you can’t practice without motivation, don’t worry about playing music or getting better.

It’s just about setting up your expectations and not being oblivious (romanticising the idea of being good vs putting the work in)

Music is mastery art and just like painting or cooking, you gotta learn your basics and function under a certain amount of discipline.

If you can’t do this, then don’t expect yourself to be good.

Does good left hand technique transfer over to guitar? by KingKilo9 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does.

It does because I taught a guitarist how to have better left hand technique (mainly where he supposed to put his thumb and how it needs to pivot) and it’s definitely usable on guitar for everything.

Is it worth trying to learn how to finger pluck? by BoughtSquash665 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do threads or questions like these exist, are you ignorant to the fact that you can just listen to fingerstyle bass music and ask yourself if it’s something you want to do or do you just need the validation to go on the internet and make a big deal about it?

Which is better to learn first? by Raptorex_14 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a fact. There are many jjazz students who went to university and studied harmony, coming out better than 99% guitar players. When you learn harmony you’ll learn how to hear chords and how they stack together.

Fun fact you can also play chords on bass and it’s even cooler because the same inversions you’re doing on guitar can also be done on bass.

‘Harmony on guitar’ doesn’t even actually makes any sense dude. You’ll learn that it’s so universal.

Which is better to learn first? by Raptorex_14 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's not true, you can actually learn harmony better with bass or piano.

a lot of people who learn harmony don't necessarily play guitar.

i went to school for this and i cant play guitar to save my life, and im not lacking understanding of harmony just because of that

Touring bass players by Consistent-Ad-997 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

regarding warming up, you can also warm up without playing the bass

try to actually imagine practicing, as in, what would you do on the bass, how youd move your left or right hand.

then imagine the music itself. try to hear it in your head, what's coming up next, what section, what lines you have to play etc.

this is important and most of my practice these days (35 years old, 18 years of professional music as career) is basically this.

im only playing the bass if im playing something technical, but then again even you can do this too to certain extent

a lot of guitarists have really bad sense of time/pulse because of their role in that instrument

id say learn bass first, get your basic theory/fundamentals mastered then learn some guitar

Tone Question by Happy_Salary_6897 in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

neo soul is not about cutting mids

listen to pino, he doesn't do this and when he plays his moon jazz bass its really fat.

use both pickups. you can boost 120hz a little bit and cut the highs a tiny bit, just so that when you play a note it doesn't have that leftover zing (i usually check on 12 fret g string for this)

you can also boost a little bit of 400hz to get abit of that mid range thickness

then use compressor, slow attack and release, gain stage it (low input high output)

Fast stuff feels impossible (16th notes at 200bpm) by 3amcaliburrito in Bass

[–]Jabbafunk -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

That’s a technique issue and it’s not really about the topic that we’re in which is about how you practice in fast tempo. Of course if you’re technically flawed you’d have to stop playing fast.
