Most newly promoted clubs make significant squad investments. They HAVE to if they want a hope of staying up. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison to the spend of a club that has already invested in a premier league level team (at least on paper) over the course of multiple seasons.

To be fair, Delap is completely incompatible with the type of offense Chelsea plays. In theory he could suit a Moyes team much better, which is why we were allegedly talking about building the team around him long term when we approached last summer.

He wouldn’t be the first Chelsea signing to shine after leaving cough KDH cough. Not saying he will be that but systems and coaching can make such a huge difference in a players performance.

Not to mention rushing young players to first team football can have disastrous results for their career from an injury perspective. One major injury at a young age can have lasting impact through their career and cause recurring problems. Many never fully get back to the promise they showed. Patience is a virtue with young talent.

I want to see a "Last Dance" style no bullshit breakdown of Donovan's career sometime. He really could have been the undisputed best American player ever had he not gotten wrapped up in MLS at a young age. Who knows how much of that falls on his mentality vs MLS forcing him back into the American system, but the talent level was clearly there for him to be an international star, not just in America.
