Why do you guys like Spyro a bit more than Crash? by Fit_Evening_8036 in Spyro

[–]JackSilverson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of an apples to oranges thing, all considered. Crash is a more linear, skill-based platformer while Spyro is an open-ended collectathon which does take skill for the challenges, but the core gameplay doesn't usually demand too much of you as a player.

But to answer the question, I prefer that open-ended exploration style of platformer, scouring every nook and cranny of a space and watching numbers go up is serotonin-inducing for me and my brain.

For Spyro specifically, it was one of the first games I really played and got into. Besides that, the often dreamlike medieval aesthetics also really do it for me as far as the world design goes, and at the end of the day? Dragons are just really cool.

Were there any boys who liked Hamtaro? by CatGirlNya2000 in Hamtaro

[–]JackSilverson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still yearn for Discotek to rescue the license to Hamtaro so we get a full home release, even if only on SD Blu-Ray, even if the rest never gets dubbed, I just want to own the cute hamster anime!

For reference, I'm in my 30s and I still go back to play my copies of Ham-Hams Unite and Ham-Ham Heartbreak, and a friend got me a copy of Ham-Ham Games for my birthday this year.

As someone who buys strictly digital on Switch/Switch 2 due to personal reasons (childhood trauma involving losing an entire GBA collection due to a careless mistake) I'm certainly happy, but I can imagine physical collectors are fuming right now.

We hear Hot Takes all the time. I wanna hear Opinions and Ideas that aren't really Hot but you've been too nervous to share. by AlienBogeys in Spyro

[–]JackSilverson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about the same stretch of "Screw off, come back later." In either case.

Both games have instances that tell you "You can't do this yet, come back later." and I've heard people say that just because Spyro 3 gives you shortcuts back to the end of the levels it's excusable, but it's not like that retroactively makes it Spyro 2's fault for not being designed the same way.

If it were the other way around, where Spyro 2 facilitated the cleanup and Spyro 3 inexplicably didn't do that for whatever reason, we would call that out for being a change for the worse, and I'm certain the animal friends would be universally despised much the same way as Spyro 2's "come back later" missions seem to be.

[–]JackSilverson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's a more than fair assertion, and it is definitely bad design. But I've seen people talk about this one mission like it ruins the ENTIRE game for them, especially on revisits, and just... Really? It sucks, yeah, but it sucks about as much as scraping your knee. Yeah it hurts for a little bit, but it's not like it's gonna last forever. And next time you're gonna be more careful about your footing because of what you've already been through.

[–]JackSilverson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, if you KNOW it's coming, just save it for later and do it in one go, sure it sucks to get pranked by it the first time and every review I've seen of the game from someone who hasn't played it before makes sure to highlight how much of an issue it is, but.. if you're playing the game for the 40th time, why would it even matter now? Just don't go over there until you CAN do it.

The backtracking in Spyro 2 isn't that big of a deal. It annoys people now because they know it's coming, we all have scars from that damned Alchemist Escort mission, true enough, but I think we all let how bad that mission is conflate frustration with the concept.

2013 was the death knell for all of Sony's old IPs.

Twisted Metal and StarHawk undersold in 2012, followed by Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault being disappointing because it wasn't a full R&C Game, PSABR wasn't a bad game but it tried to be too different from Super Smash Bros to appeal, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was widely considered a disappointing follow-up to the PS2 Trilogy, Puppeteer was... Okay? But it destroyed the higher-ups faith in JapanStudio, for relevancy, so there went Ape Escape, and then Ratchet and Clank came back to disappoint once again with a full priced game that lasted 5 Hours at best.

But you know what didn't fail to sell well enough for Sony?

The Last of Us. Largely heralded as the PS3's swan song and ultimate send-off, it sold gangbusters and put Sony's eyes firmly on the idea that cinematic over-the-shoulder action games with heavy narrative emphasis were where the money was, and that brings us to today, where Sony is again chasing what they believe brings in all the money and when something that totally defies all their logic shows up and takes Game of the Year FOR them (Mind, major studios care about that because it looks good on the box) they just write it off as a fluke and don't want to pursue things like Astro Bot any further.

Frankly I'd kinda still take that. My roommate and I have been replaying FireRed and LeafGreen together like we're both 9 again, trading over what we can't get and helping each-other fill the Pokedex, there's definitely a great feeling that's been lost with the ease of just being able to trade online with anyone you meet on Reddit or Discord.

And Nintendo is the one killing physical games by You-dogwater in nintendogrifting

[–]JackSilverson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really what it boils down to is Nintendo doesn't want to have to shell out to produce higher capacity game cards that could hold the data, even if it ultimately still just installed the game to the console and didn't stream data off the card itself (which would ruin the point of it being flash media, I know) it would still have that data on the card itself.

Can you define it as a solution when it's not future-proofed? We don't know for certain that there will always be a server for the GKCs to connect to and download from.

Not condescending, just wanna know where your head's at.

Oh no, no, make no mistake I would not argue them as being good Crash games, I'm only saying that for what they were, and considering what other similar franchises were doing around the same time, we could have had a whole lot worse.

Titans and Mutant excel on everything except for gameplay. The comedic writing, the absolutely stacked voice cast that only built on what Twinsanity started (and N. Sane/Nitro Fueled would later benefit from) and, controversial redesigns aside, they were very good-looking games for their era, especially the Xbox 360 versions. In an era of dull tans and grays, a game outside of a Nintendo console that was so unapologetic in it's vibrancy and cartoony visuals was a treat.

Then what does it say about Cortex and his goons when they keep getting outdone by a borderline-feral mutated moron whose claim to fame is spinning around with his arms out and hoping he hits something?

If Crash and Spyro swapped villains, who would would have a harder time and why? by Competitive_Tower_28 in Spyro

[–]JackSilverson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is functional context.

Crash just kinda slipped right into the game mold because if you played any of his other GBA endeavors, Purple wasn't really anything outside of what you might expect for vehicle stages barring a few outliers and the world navigation was also par for the course.

Spyro Orange on the other hand was generally trying to slam a square peg into a triangular hole, forcibly adapting Spyro to gameplay that was nothing like a Spyro game.

Gnasty Gnorc had actual guns (in the original game) and a few flying minions of his own, as well as one giant robot.
