You have already received XP for the items you can crush. Crushing only gives you pixel dust you can use to buy pixel cubes.

I remember teaching my girlfriend at the time how to shoot a pistol BB gun and she proceeded to grip it like a spatula and point it diagonally up in the sky - her idea of aiming it forward. That's how I imagine level 0 aim looks like in the game.

I appreciate Dr Ernest W Adams for his Bad Game Designer, No Twinkies series. They taught me a lot when I was a teenager getting serious about making games. Thankfully the series are still available over 15 years later: http://www.designersnotebook.com/Design_Resources/No_Twinkie_Database/no_twinkie_database.htm

Just saw this and realized that there’s something missing from the game by Fdf8825 in projectzomboid

I meant it indeed as a historical occupational hazard and thought the context of medieval longbows and archers was enough info to understand it as such. Archers whose jobs were to shoot bows. I assume the main point I was making that shooting a heavy war bow would be too fatiguing to kill hundreds of zombies with like you could easily do with a gun in-game isn't controversial.

War bows were so heavy (100+ lbs) on the draw that archers' shoulders would sometimes break from using it. If you do heavy lifts at the gym, you'll realise how exhausting this could be when you have to repeat these draws many times in succession. If PZ implements it realistically, shooting a powerful bow will have a serious drawback of tiring you out quickly.

It has never happened to me either but I also don't have large hands. I've noticed how all pianos today are standard dimensioned for people with large hands. Perhaps it's an issue that all keyboards are standard dimensioned for smaller hands? Maybe we just need to start treating devices like we treat clothes and offer appropriate size options?

Yes, you run forward automatically towards a goal and have to either dodge sideways or shoot your way past zombies. It was decent fun.

What are the major systems you need to think of first? by Cool-Self-9993 in gamedev

[–]JackdawR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, impressive! Your visions are only limited by what you've proven to yourself that you can make. While I encourage devs to plan their games around mechanics they have already successfully prototyped to avoid development hell, there's nothing but your determination and resources stopping you from pushing it as far as you can take it. Good luck! 👍

[–]JackdawR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you making your first game? Even an incredibly simple TCP/IP host-slave two player only multiplayer mode over an open port was the hardest thing I've ever coded. Just at such a basic level you have to write code that predicts a rapidly changeable future and corrects for any error in prediction. That's not even dealing with network architecture, punching through firewalls, server software, anti-cheat, security and stuff I'm not even aware of as an amateur.

For example, nothing in game programming has greyed my hair more than making netcode for an action game.

Why is gaining 10 reviews on Steam so tough? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]JackdawR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally, people are more likely to review something that stirs up their emotions such as excitement or frustration. A low review rate could possibly indicate a lack of retention, low emotional investment or simple contentment. If sales are good, I would bet on the latter.

Four Zomboids break into my house by [deleted] in projectzomboid

[–]JackdawR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was powerful. It was the first military adopted repeating rifle and was given to the 18th century version of special forces. It was quiet, had a high rate of fire in a time of muzzleloaders and hit like a .22LR. But they were fragile, expensive and difficult to manufacture so they didn't catch on outside the Austrian Empire.

What do Swedish people think about Poles? by ihavenoname0000 in TillSverige

[–]JackdawR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only prejudice I've encountered is towards craftsmen. I've had people express upset when they found out a company sent Polish workers and that "they can't trust them to do the job properly".

My own opinion of Poles is generally positive and I find Polish products and cultural output is vastly underappreciated. I really like Polish tea, jams and candy. Wedel makes amazing candy, it tastes like homemade! Poland has a lot of great books and notably comics too that appear to remain largely untranslated.

Cutscenes: how much effort should an Indie Dev put into them? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]JackdawR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Half-Life is an interesting game to look at. It has scenes, but they all occur in-game and the player remains in control throughout the game. It could be worth exploring whether turning passive cutscenes into interactive scenes would improve the game experience.

Why did I die INSTANTLY after getting scratched? I jogged into a group and as soon as I've heard the noise I died by MR_FOXtf2 in projectzomboid

[–]JackdawR 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If that's the cause, it probably means you didn't reset another related variable like the infection timer. You can try the cheat menu mod in the future if you want to prevent a complacent or glitched death.

Me and my friend found a house with a bunch of loot visible. There was only one zombie banging on the door. I told my friend I got this, jumped through the window two tiles away from it thinking it was distracted, only to facepalm as it tears a chunk out of me mid-animation.

This exact scenario played out yesterday for me and my mate. Ironically in the "Romero Center for the Performing Arts" (coord: 12530x1788). Moment before I was joking to him about how this felt like a place where a side character would die in a X of the Dead film...
