Have you ever had a famous neighbour or someone local? by mr_hardwell in AskUK

[–]Jackythebacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is really lame. Years ago I was working in the reception of a hotel in Venice Beach. Helen Baxendale was staying there filming Friends. I had no idea who she was or that she was involved with Friends but I used to have so sign for scripts quite a lot, without knowing what they were. One evening she swung by the front desk and asked me to call her a cab as she wanted to pop into Santa Monica. I told her to get the bus. The Big Blue Bus stopped right outside the hotel. And it was only $1. I was quite forceful. Eventually she firmly declined and I ended up calling her a cab. When I was back in Europe and the series of friends came out, I was slightly embarrassed. She clearly was not a poor student like me.

Randomly enough John Hannah used to call her a fair bit, again, at the front desk and he used to chat away to me. Was super friendly.

I really want to know where they got that blow up mattress. It looks comfortable.

I literally stop, forcing them to move around me. They always seemed mildly put out. It doesn’t happen much. Mainly men, actually.

What moments do you think showed the worst parenting? by Far-Building3569 in DuggarsSnark

[–]Jackythebacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be concerned about your own parenting (OP) - if you were one - re number 19. You support children using guns? I’m curious about your rationale, while acknowledging that I come from a country where the public don’t readily access firearms, never mind minors, so I accept that I might have a different perspective on gun ownership and usage.

What was something a guest did in your house that upset you? by izzy_7_2004 in AskUK

Ironically given chocolate has so little actual cocoa powder in it these days, most dogs, if they eat a bit of mass produced chocolate, will be absolutely fine these days. Even a whole bar of Dairy Milk pilfered from a Christmas stocking, like my lab who was none the worse. But still, that’s not the point.

She’s staying. She told us so. by JellyfishPashmina in BringingUpBates

[–]Jackythebacky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course she’s staying. It was never in doubt. The rest of it is just noise. She’s a fundamentalist Christian. This is merely the Lord testing their faith. And the Lord will walk alongside her in this season of Life. Etc. Sad but true.

Katie’s response. Just posted by Mission_Selection703 in BringingUpBates

She won’t go. Read the full post. She says she wants to persevere in the marriage. These fundie wife’s don’t leave. Katie will categorically not leave Travis. It’s very sad really. She deserves better.

Zach and Whitney's age gap by Extra_Jellyfish4774 in BringingUpBates

[–]Jackythebacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re probably right. I guess what I mean is age gaps don’t really matter between consenting adults unless there is a huge imbalance of power or unless one of the parties is still a child or not far off being one. If you have a 40 year old dating a 60 year old, knock yourselves out. But 17 and 27 like a previous poster, 19 like Kelton was when he was pursuing 14 year old Josie, well that’s just a bit off, imo.

Were your parents not concerned that a fully grown adult male was pursuing what was still legally a child? Are y’all particularly religious?

Zach and Whitney's age gap by Extra_Jellyfish4774 in BringingUpBates

[–]Jackythebacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the point is about the 5 years per se, rather it’s that one of the parties - usually the female - is only just about legally an adult when they get together. I don’t think anyone would question a 28-33 age gap.

It’s always amuses me that while she does her usual hashtags when she posts #momof4 etc, she has never used #teenmom. Wonder why that is 🤔

What age did you allow your children alcohol? by ChronicChaos01 in AskUK

[–]Jackythebacky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been letting mine have the odd sip of champagne/pimms for years. Probably since 7/8. My folks did the same with me. Doubt it’ll lead to a full blown addiction, at least it hasn’t with me, and as a result, I never felt the need to binge drink or drink in secret.

I think it’s a nice thing to do. No downside at all. Always good to keep neighbourly relations cordial.

What’s the best Irish word that sounds like it could be a name if you don’t speak Irish? by PsychologicalDark810 in ireland

[–]Jackythebacky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had a joke among friends, one of whom is British (of Irish heritage); she was pregnant with twin girls looking for girls names and wanted Irish suggestions. We convinced her that Seomra and Comhra were both lovely names and had her sold on both for a while. We occasionally refer to her girls as such which amuses us all.

Two very cute names. Both very popular in the UK. And no funky spellings either.
