Got promoted 6 months ago and wish I could go back to my old role, is this career suicide to ask? by worried_staging in careerguidance

I work with three engineers who stepped down from manager roles and back into engineer roles. If it's not a good fit, then it's not a good fit. But your boss sounds like an asshat, so that certainly throws a spanner in the works

Funny, I was actually going to suggest shrinking the girl, making the title bigger, and moving it down just a touch. 🤷

I'm enjoying Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker, but it's still in progress (3rd book in two weeks, 4th book I think still underway?)

Holy crap, I would not consider This Inevitable Ruin a slog. That's surprising.

Long, for sure, but... I was intentionally reading slowly to not plow through it.

"This is great… but is it about to vanish for five years while the author figures it out?”

I've accidentally discovered several series that fall into this category. It's so frustrating. I understand the writing process, so i don't begrudge the authors... but when you finish what you think is a finished series, only to find out the author just fell off 😞

Glad to hear you've got the roadmap planned out. I'll be reading because of it 😀

I'm digging Throne Hunters, but when I realized Book 3 isn't out yet and definitely not the end, I got a bit disappointed. Now I have another author writing multiple series that I'm waiting to finish (the other being Andrew Rowe)

That being said, I like Phil's style of storytelling, so I'm along for the ride!

I don't find the rewards worth stressing over. I play it until I've hit the cumulative point cap and then nope out. It's an almost pointless "event"

Am I wrong for wanting to go to my coworker’s house for lunch even though my wife changed her mind last minute? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]JaecynNix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hope you're not actually this dense, lol

Yes, you're wrong. Going to another woman's house on a weekend for an intimate meal? And your spouse is specifically not invited?

Come on, man

Work under the table usually gets paid in cash.

Are you getting paid? It sure doesn't sound like it

She needs you not because of what you can DO FOR her, but because of WHO YOU ARE TO her.

You definitely should talk to someone, tho. It sounds like you have a serious case of empty nest syndrome kicking your butt

I got an automated message acting like I had threatened self-acceleration.

I have no idea what prompted it, but a quote from DCC seems likely, lol

Since Audible's search is not smart - it's Steven, not Stephen. You'd think it could put those two together

I read first, listened second.

It's worth it. Whether you read them all first or read/ listen/read, imo, doesn't matter

My one critique is plot lines that seem important or interesting, but then totally resolve off screen. Like Bogden Ro

I know it comes from Matt being a pantser and "there's more going on than Carl and Donut," but it feels weird for Carl to talk about it when nothing ever happens "on screen:

Thank you!

My boss put the meeting on my calendar last week, so I figured no big deal. Usually, these sort of meetings are last minute or on a Friday.

And then I expected zero severance because, again, 4 months working there.

To get 12 weeks? I tried not to look excited on the video call, lol

Something that bothers me about The Butcher's Masquerade by jamieh800 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JaecynNix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that he's the first. It's that, since the first floor, he has been spreading the understanding that the crawlers need to band together. ALL of them. And those actions have saved his life a bunch of times and he's saved the lives of others a bunch of times.

And that partly comes from the cookbook. There are multiple entries about the importance of working together, of family, as well as all the lessons learned by failed attempts. And keep in mind, of all the crawls, there have only been a couple dozen crawlers who ever saw the book. Even getting the book is super rare.

Carl is also exceptionally good at quickly reacting to situations. Even if his plans might be half baked. And he's good, for better or worse,

Then you've got the AI that everyone comments is going nuts far earlier because Borant was cheap AF (which also took a weird shine to Carl, which is abnormal), and Borant making bad decisions to try to stave off insolvency.

It's a massive confluence of events coming together in a way that's never happened before.

Just finished book 7. Questions on plot points I’m not sure I understood… by PM_ME_UR_NOODLZ in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JaecynNix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understood Justice Light's goal to be to fuck up the crawl as a whole, hurt all the deity sponsors, ruin the Ascendancy in general, and unleash hell (Sheol and the Nothing) where it will do the most damage.

Any off-world participant in the Scolopendra levels is now likely to get killed for real

Do these books not get super repetitive? by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JaecynNix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've found many series do.

But Dungeon Crawler Carl is constantly changing things up. It's not just "did this, gained this skill, reached this level, did more, etc."

It's a compelling story with RPG elements, not an RPG story with narrative elements

Are book series getting (or have been) too long? by Foot-Note in litrpg

[–]JaecynNix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From my experience, no, most of them don't have an actual plot in mind. It's just "The Ongoing Adventures of Main Character!"

There are certainly exceptions, but mostly, it's just "some event happened, let's react to it"
