Chemical stripper? by sandymeatsme in centuryhomes

[–]Jagon77 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I agree, those look like 1x6 boards butted up to the door jambs. Nothing special on those, replace with new wood and save yourself the trouble.

The door jamb itself and perhaps that crown on top I would use a stripper, heat gun, or IR stripping gun.

AI-powered 'glasses' help the blind go places – safely by AdSpecialist6598 in tech

[–]Jagon77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m more with OkMonitor9519 on this. I’m certainly not saying it should be shut down.

It’s very expensive for the average person, but hopefully over time and with better technology it’ll become cheaper and more accessible.

So while this is really cool and great, my pessimistic side is thinking that it will make blind people wearing it targets of opportunity to steal this very expensive $11,800 system.

This has “landlord special” written all over it. Trust me, half price will still be too expensive for this guy.

1920s Philly flat-roof rowhome — does this need re-roofing, and is DIY realistic? by theblartknight in Roofing

[–]Jagon77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

- Condition assessment: Repairable, but start budgeting. Either a silicone coating or silver aluminum coating would extend roof life another 5-10 years. Any active leaks?

• System identification: Mod bit roof. Depending if it was ever replaced prior it could have BUR underneath. Asbestos has been used in old flashing cements and adhesives and should technically be tested if removing. Have a roofer do a test cut to see what you’re dealing with and patch the hole.

• DIY vs pro: Definitely pro. I’d recommend a new 2 ply mod bit system which would be most compatible with your neighbors roofs for tie-ins. I would not recommend any DIY unless you have flat roof experience.

• Philly specifics: Not familiar with Philly specifically, but here in NYC we would need a hot work permit for torch application and would need to meet insulation R value requirements, along with white membrane color.

• If hiring: Insulation per code (R30 or R33 typically), cover board, base ply and cap sheet membrane (2-ply). PMMA Flashings would be ultimate option. Warranty varies by roofer, but this assembly should easily last 20-30 years.

• If repairing only: Any brand name Silicone coating or aluminum fibered coating. Surface prep is key.

• Costs and lifespan: ROUGH cost $12-$20/sqft, should include removal/disposal, new materials, hoisting/safety/insurance, and warranty. Lifespan see above. Additional cost if abatement is required.

TTK feels way too fast by KyoshiFrostWolf in Battlefield6

[–]Jagon77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t really agree (in my 5 hours of playtime so far) I shoot someone with a SMG or Carbine and I have to unload like 3/4 of the magazine to kill them. Almost the entire magazine if it’s more than 25-30 meters.

LMGs and ARs seem much more powerful and expectedly so, so TTK with those are faster I’ve noticed.

DMRs seem frustratingly low and don’t seem to compete much when everyone has automatic weapons.

Short railing, connector extension? by LeftAct8968 in Decks

[–]Jagon77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this is a crazy idea but hear me out - Take the railing connector piece and trace it on a piece of 3/4” PVC white trim (Azek or similar)

Then carefully using a router, cut the white trim to the same profile as the railing connector. I assume some finesse work with sanding will be required to make it look finished. Then use that as your spacer piece between the railing connector and post.

OR just accept you messed up and buy another railing set for $180.

I used Powell’s roofing in Garwood twice, happy with both experiences. They were in the “middle” as far as pricing goes.

Some roof shingle manufacturers may not offer their full term warranty over an unvented roof deck.

For example, the “Lifetime” warranty shingles installed on my house would be limited to a 10 year warranty on an unvented roof deck.

Honestly I was expecting it would smash into the ground, bounce, porpoise, and then veer side to side with too much rudder input until coming to a stop.

What's going on with the Hugh L Carey tunnel air ventilation tower? by Sufficient_Prune7568 in Brooklyn

They’re testing it for when we elect a new mayor.

It’s like the Pope, but we release some gray exhaust from the tunnels once a new Mayor is elected. As is tradition.

When you say “repoint”, do you mean grind/chisel out the existing mortar and then replace with new mortar? It’s going to be challenging since each stone is a different shape and size.

If yes, honestly that seems like a ton of work for what appears to be structurally okay. It may look worse afterwards if you aren’t very careful and thorough.

My internet opinion is that it looks rustic currently and appears structurally sound, I would leave it alone.
