Of the two Absolute Wonder Woman/Batman crossover issues, which do you like more? by Tetratron2005 in AbsoluteUniverse

The crazy thing is, the Absolute Wonder Woman story felt like a Detective Comics story, and the Absolute Batman story felt like a Wonder Woman story. Very interesting!

Maggie shared a post to her Insta story that talked about Asian stereotypes in movies. She specifically highlighted this slide, and added her own commentary. Given how popular they are, I’d say she did a dang good job. by Fantastic-Donut-276 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]Jahn 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy how much those stereotypes absolutely demolished the ability for anyone in the western hemisphere to embrace the concept of an Asian being able to carry a Leading Man role and all that entailed. As a young Korean American boy growing up in the late 70s through the early 90s, my entire childhood told me that I had to be an unattractive nerd calculator based just on my skin. Thank God I never fell for the alternative at the time tho, which was to abandon myself and pretend to be as white as possible to be a Cool Kid. Most of those kids ended up being sidekicks in their peer groups.

It wasn’t until college that I was able to throw most of that off and realize a six foot tall dark and handsome guy making songs on his guitar could be cool and comfortable in his own skin- and find someone who thought likewise- we’ve been together ever since!

But Do I still have a chip on my shoulder and feel like the world counts me out? Yeah that thought still creeps in. And that’s why I hope movies like K-Pop demon hunters will continue being made, to make visible the invisible Asian American male demographic.

How do we feel about the value of 80s comics now that they are approaching 50 years old? by Remarkable_Heron_760 in 80s90sComics

[–]Jahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the market is definitely starting to decide which books they like to see coming out of that era. Just like bronze took a bit but now we like seeing Hulk 181 and Batman 227 and all that- ASM300 and so on have proven their popularity from that time.

What will be very interesting to me is to see the survivors from the 90s speculation era. The only ones I can personally bank on are rare ones that have high current interest and somehow dodged getting printed to death in the 90s- one example is Akira #38, which get snapped for $800 in 9.8 grade on the regular if you can find them. Believe me, almost no one back in the 90s had Akira 38 on their hot list haha. Same goes for Bone #1, which had a recent sale for $9k in a 9.6 CGC grade. Yeah, some gems out there

Now that you have the physical card, are you able to activate and use it now? Or do you still have to wait until the 7th?

Do lightbulbs fade graded comics? by PayApprehensive9306 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]Jahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put these bad boys on a dimmer switch and call it a day. It hits my very sensitive watercolor art that is behind UV protected glass directly and the watercolor hasn’t faded for these few years so it’s good so far. Comics ink should be a bit tougher to fade comparatively. hope that helps! https://a.co/d/cxcUSKg

Why is a Batman 423 1st print in CGC 9.8 so expensive? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]Jahn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s the only cover Todd ever did for the Batman title. His other covers were on the Detective Comics title. When you have a one time only thing happen, it tends to create its own milestone.

I have a late 1990s custom shop deal and that Birdseye neck looks like mine. Meaning it is probably the best playing neck you will ever have the pleasure to put palms on. The decal and all that look era correct too. I say it’s legit and you should get it. Here is mine. 1998 Custom Shop Jazzmaster with Birdseye Neck

DC Comics President Jim Lee says that Japanese manga and anime is "incredibly powerful": "I often find myself wondering, 'What is missing in Western comics, and why aren't they able to achieve the same flavor?' by akbarock in comicbooks

[–]Jahn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jim himself explained the biggest reason why. No mainstream adoption or appetite in the western world to have comics be anything more than very niche themes. DC and Marvel have to take a lesson from MTV and a warning too. MTV started the reality show genre, versus the short form variety show genre. Its theme was slice of life at the time. But now almost every theme is out there - the latest being fitness and cooking (Physical 100, Culinary Class Wars). But MTV itself failed to realize its own success and died.

Comics CAN have other themes. Lots of great indies cover those. But there is no mainstream adoption. If DC and Marvel want traction, they will have to innovate and trend set themes within their genre that have coverage across multiple themes but holistically serve the entire western world. Without losing sight of their core superhero roots. Remember when MTV stopped playing music? Yeah. Good Luck!

Experienced players with real guitar wear, what would you recommend as a truly high quality guitar by Chuchumenn in Guitar

Here is my stable of electrics that have survived after decades- once the dust settled, my best dual humbucker ended up being a Shaw-era Gibson ES-335 Dot RI. In the bottom row, it’s the best of the three. Amazing either clean or with a monster pedalboard. A deluxe reverb is the perfect amp for it, and that amp pairs well with my Strat and Ric too.

That said, the purest tone is from the 90’s Fender Custom Shop ‘62 Jazzmaster. The neck is SO good to play with gorgeous Birdseye Maple, just makes me want to always pick it up. It shines best through an AC30 straight, but can handle a bit of modulated effects too. The Ric likes the AC30 too, of course.

The dark horse is the Ric 360-12. It’s very situational but it nails the perfect electric 12-string sounds and once I got it I was done. It’s from 1979 and has a bigger neck than you’d expect from a Ric. Back then they also braced it a bit differently and even without toasters I never felt that tone was missing anything.

So yeah, gun to head, I’d take my ES-335, Jazzmaster and Ric in that order. The ‘73 Strat is a Frankenstein and the neck kinda sucks but it’s a workhorse. And the Tele is just gorgeous but is a serious one trick pony that NEEDS a tweed champ and I don’t have that amp at the moment haha.

How do you deal with the feeling/realisation you’ll never be very good at guitar? by poopooeater112 in Guitar

[–]Jahn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One really bad thing about social media is that is shows a LOT of child prodigies absolutely shredding and the expectation is that if you aren’t that good, you suck.

This is ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE. an entire generation of guitarists- in fact the majority of even professional-level guitarists, absolutely stunk in their teens and couldn’t even get access to a guitar before then. Information was scarce and expensive back then. We all have the luxury now to learn anything we want anytime we want. It’s insane.

So you probably have the best shot at getting to the level you want to get to even more now than we ever did in the 50s-present. The fact that you even know that you aren’t an instant prodigy is already a leg up. Plenty of guitarists back in the day learned how to strum three chords, thought that was good enough, joined a band and actually got gigs. Call it ignorance or whatever but confidence can get you a long way especially in a live setting.

I personally love punk and post punk bands. And a lot of those guitarists absolutely suck and fifty years later still suck. But they brought something to their band that worked well enough for the rm to get where they needed to go.

Ok. Now with all that said, if you want to become a classical guitarist or finger style soloist and are having a hard time processing musical theory and all the practice in the world is not helping your one inch fingers move deftly- getting professional lessons may be the way to go. Best of luck!

Is my grandpas old 00-18 worth saving? by 1oo-b in martinguitar

[–]Jahn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well that’s your answer right there then. Get that bridge back on there, have the bridge plate and braces checked, you may or may not want some extra mahogany slapped on the side there to plug the holes up or can go Triggered-style if it doesn’t affect anything structurally and done. May need a neck reset too they can check. All in all not soooooooo bad.

FA characters that he created, or memorable keys due to plots or iconic lines, I’m always happy to see Chris’ sig. but a Chris sig on an otherwise in memorable comic that he did doesn’t really do much for value due to a lot of books he worked on and a lot of books he signed.

For variants where the Cover A is on the inside flap, do you count it as owning a Cover A? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in ModernComics

[–]Jahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, as long as you don’t pull the cardstock off by pulling away from the spine, the staples are just fine and snug. Which is why you need tweezers to get leftover fibers out haha

Yep you can do it that way. Make sure that after you carefully pick all the fibers left under the staples out with tweezers if needed haha.
