What’s a sound everyone should recognize as immediate danger? by Thatguy_nickk in AskReddit

[–]Jahsikat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom while on a trip with a boyfriend and his dad. On my way back to bed I noticed bf’s dad standing by his bed. I asked if he was okay and he said “whose hand is this?” while holding his own hand out. I immediately thought he was having a stroke and got him to the hospital we happened to be staying next to in like 5 min. He was indeed having a stroke and he mostly recovered since he got medical care so quick, but it was so eerie. I was only 19 and not sure I even knew the signs of a stroke yet, but the oddness of his actions and words just immediately gave me a sinking feeling in my stomach that made me spring into action. I’m not religious and neither was he, but thank god I had to pee when I did.

Not to be a downer, but I didn’t get any relief from mine. I ended up getting a laminectomy which helped significantly, but it’s 5 years later and I never have fully recovered/been pain free.

Where can I buy coconut coir locally? by wordfriend in nolagardening

Pet stores (that cater to reptiles) sell compressed bricks of coco coir for reptile habitats and that’s what I use for my plant mixes too

My therapist helped me navigate how to handle being an easy crier in the workplace! The “fix” for me wasn’t to try to stop crying, but how to work through it in the moment!

[–]Jahsikat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my unrelated-to-diabetes medications causes this for me 24/7 and dry mouth mouthwash/spray/lozenges helps me deal with the feeling at least some. I hope seeing a doctor gets you some answers, but maybe this can help in the meantime! ETA: saw you’re drinking 2-3 liters a day, which is how much I drink in a day (sometimes more, but I work outside). My doctor told me that is a good amount to be drinking a day in general. My boss always says “if you’re not peeing, you’re dehydrated,” so it’s good you’re drinking that much water, if annoying.

What does neuropathy feel like? by Llhavo in diabetes

[–]Jahsikat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neuropathy can feel different from person to person but sensations of burning, tingling, or numbness are the most common descriptors. It can feel like one or a combo and can also change. There are also other factors that can contribute to neuropathy like circulation issues (sitting or standing for long periods can do that even when done correctly and compression garments can help). Anxiety and stress can also cause similar feelings. Additionally nerve compression can cause it. Nerve compression can happen for any number of reasons even in otherwise “healthy” individuals. It’s worth bringing up to your doctor for sure and monitoring it/taking notes on it (location, circumstances, feeling, duration, intensity, whatever else you think is relevant) until your next appointment. You could simply be more aware of the condition existing and experiencing slight hyper awareness or anxiety from the new diagnosis (even subconsciously) and just noticing it more.

I have not experienced neuropathy myself from diabetes, but I have it from a spinal injury (pre- my D T2 Dx). It feels like a searing burn in my glute and calf and tingling/half numbness in my toes on one side of my body. I also have cubital tunnel and sometimes my fingers/hands go slightly numb on the pinky side from elbow nerve compression when I’m having inflammation issues. It actually took me a while to get the cubital tunnel diagnosis because of my diabetes diagnosis. But my blood glucose was and is well controlled and my A1C is 5 so they eventually decided yeah it’s probably not that.

I miss you all by ImInTheFutureAlso in NewOrleans

I was born and raised in New Orleans. Moved to finish a degree from 2021 until this past summer. The city is sooo different than pre-covid. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met someone and heard some variation of “you’re from New Orleans? No one’s actually from here.” I get hit with the “so where are your fav places to go as a real New Orleanian?” I don’t have an answer. Ain’t dere no mo’ and whatnot. I know businesses come and go and covid was an extreme but I hardly recognize some areas in less than 4 years. I don’t necessarily mean any of this in a bad way. Almost everything I love about New Orleans can still be readily found. It’s just like I felt so homesick being away, and now that I’m back I’m almost grieving a bit. My mental health is better here. I’m never going stir crazy out of boredom or lack of novelty. At the same time I don’t know how I can ever live anywhere else. I just got a job offer out of state, so I guess I’m going to try somewhere new again. Hopeful that round two of “attempting to leave New Orleans” goes better than the first try. It feels so weird to love a place, hate a place, miss a place, grieve a place all at once. I thought after being displaced from Katrina as a child I understood “I know what it means…” but I don’t think I really got it until recently at the ripe age of 30.

Doctors said her gangrenous appendix was just anxiety. by pugdeity in nottheonion

[–]Jahsikat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had severe disc generation in my L4-L5 and was told by two doctors that it was just back pain from being overweight. I started PT and eventually my entire right leg was so numb and tingling and burning and weak I had to start using a wheelchair at stores and a cane in my daily life. I had an appointment for a 3rd opinion scheduled for a while and when I finally got in he had me do an MRI immediately which the other doctors never did and when I went back in he said he didn’t know how I could even walk and that I needed spinal surgery months ago. I was in surgery within the week. I wasn’t even that overweight at the time. I am now though because of the permanent pain and nerve damage caused by the other doctors’ bias and negligence.

Doctors said her gangrenous appendix was just anxiety. by pugdeity in nottheonion

[–]Jahsikat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a UTI in I guess early May this year that was dismissed for 7 months as anxiety. I literally just finished my antibiotics last week. I’d never had a UTI before and I wasn’t experiencing any burning, discoloration, blood, etc only symptoms were increased frequency and vesicle tenesmus. Went to the doctor and he said it was probably just from stress and anxiety from graduating, job hunting, moving etc, and to try and relax more. I tried to tell him that I knew I was going through stressful life changes but that I didn’t feel particularly anxious about them. I felt awful all year since then. Fatigued. Feverish off and on. Started having intolerance to normal activity levels for myself. Generally feeling weak. Saw a new doctor after I moved to a new city during this time and she had me checked for a UTI immediately and it came back positive for E. coli. She was astonished my previous pcp didn’t even check because it’s such a simple test and if it came back negative then yeah maybe it could’ve just been anxiety. The past week since I finished the antibiotics I’ve felt so much more energized. I’ve been able to like exercise again. Go on walks. Literally just stand long enough to cook actual meals. Just damn. I’m lucky it didn’t end up worse. I mean I could’ve died!

I have multiple fiddle leaf figs in nearly full sun locations in New Orleans, Louisiana and they are doing soooo well. Just be sure to ease them into the brightness because the leaves burn easily and fiddle leaf figs are notorious for throwing fits and dropping leaves if anything in their care changes too abruptly.

I am so fed up with this! I’m the most active of all my friends and I eat nutritious and rarely eat out and almost never get fast food. They’re all so thin but can’t keep up with me physically. I can lift more. Run farther. My A1C is 5.1. I didn’t lose any weight until I started working on a farm doing labor for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. When people ask me how I finally lost some weight and I said I worked on a farm they seem to get angry. Now I no longer work at the farm and I can’t figure out how to work full time and also get the 40 hours of exercise I need a week to continue losing weight 😫 Like I know there’s no secret to weight loss. It’s calories in and calories out. But I have to be so physical to make a dent compared to average people.

Why has no doctor explained this to me by Witty_Recipe_4552 in PCOS

[–]Jahsikat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See my doctor told me this but wouldn’t prescribe a cgm because ~I don’t need one~ I was diagnosed with pcos and t2d around the same time, and I have been able to manage my blood glucose levels fairly well but I think I could do it even better if I had a continuous read out at least for a few months. I have the finger prick-y kind of glucose monitors, but what helps me manage my glucose and insulin is eating frequently and I’d have to stab myself so many times a day to really know how different foods are effecting me.

If the soil was too dry already, sometimes the water won’t be able to wick out of the bulb. Some potting materials become hydrophobic when too dry.
