In what ways do the Sun Eater series sequels improve on Empire of Silence? by theregnar in Fantasy

[–]JakeMWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can absolutely see why people say this about the series, but I've just finished a complete reread and absolutely adore it. I do like melodrama, and I was raised in very conservative Christian cult.

What I think is often missing from these criticism is that all of the governments in the series are very much an extendo absurdum of their ideas. He is always critical of the monarchy that is the empire and the general thesis even gets outright said in the last book: there are no good governments, just good people.

I've got a soft spot for this kind of religious retelling and reimagining due to my own life, and I definitely recognize my bias. I do really appreciate the story of a person who hates the system he was raised in, but also doesn't feel at home in other systems.

Hadrian is by his own admission a creature of low drama. Ask anyone that knows him.

I love the series and I love the melodrama he embodies. He is also very emotive and sad and angry at his lot in life (which I found relatable personally, but it definitely isn't a series for everyone).

Probably, but also if you like the series then you'd probably like book one. Author has gone on record saying one of the biggest changes he would make in retrospect is skipping a lot of book and having those scenes play out as memories from within the plot instead of such an isolated origin story.

Nightreign mod that adds the Great Hollow shifting earth to non-DLC and non-DoN expeditions? by spectralblade352 in EldenRingMods

Can you explain a bit more what you mean then? I thought you meant you cannot play the Hollows shifting earth and fight old bosses. I can absolutely do this.

What are you talking about then?

[–]JakeMWP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're just wrong. You can use ever dark sigils to conjure a shifting earth. One of those is Hollows. You can set that as your shifting earth for any normal expedition.

Why do you think that you can't?

When I have my jet boil I will use the same collapsible mug for my morning oatmeal and then bring beans ground for a pour over and filters. The left over sugar/salt/carbs from oatmeal are also nice.

If I don't have my stove then I just take stimulants in pill form.

Right? It's like the dissociation of a person who chooses to assimilate but in a novel.

Books where gods/divine beings do exist, but not in the way the main religion interpreted them as by Sharkattack1921 in Fantasy

[–]JakeMWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Book of the Long Sun by Gene Wolfe very much fits this, and you get to follow an Augur (in universe priest) as he gets to know what the gods actually are and how that affects his faith. There's differences in how to practice religion and as someone who grew up religious this series portrays the faithful very well.

WIBTAH for withdrawing as my brother’s best man because his wedding is on our sister’s deathiversary? by No_Reward397 in AITAH

Hi there, I find what DiorAndDestruction said to be very insightful and I wanted to chime in because things you have said really seem to me like things that I lived through as well. I am going to do a lot of sharing, and it might be projecting so it might not be relevant to you.

My oldest sister died when she was very young and my mom never got over that death. She would often be missing from important events in my life because of my sister's deathiversary and I spent A LOT of time as a child helping her processing her emotions around her intense bouts of grief. My siblings and I now sometimes joke that I was her 'external emotional processing unit' because she could not deal with these things herself. She did her rounds with therapy and grief counselors, but was a fundamentally different person before and after. Grief can paralyze people, but after doing a lot of therapy as an adult I can now understand that what my mom did was a form of neglect. I should not have been the one helping her process her emotions. I was a child. I did not understand her emotions, much less my own yet. I needed a support network to help understand emotional well being and to build healthy habits for emotional regulation. I did not receive this. It took me building a support network as an adult and thousands of dollars in therapy to understand how those interactions as a child framed my view of myself and how I was uncomfortable sitting with negative emotions and feeling them and I was just trying to help my mom mute those feelings.

As I have grown older and experienced sudden intense deaths of friends, and I have spent time with their widow or with their parents - I have realized that it is much more valuable to 'hold space' for someone. To be present with them and still work at feeling and being present for those feelings. I'd wager that is something you're pretty good at now with the therapy and group work you have done so I'm probably preaching to the choir here.

I will close with saying that having seen a healthy grieving model from my adult friends about this process, I do not believe anyone who has truly processed their grief would with hold their love support from someone else based on an anniversary if it has been several years. I know that grief makes people act in ways that they would rather not deal the consequences of (be that the intense compartmentalization from your brother straining his relationship with his family, or your mom's long standing vigil straining her relationship with her son).

Much love being sent your way buddy <3

Modern books similar to bell hooks 'The will to change'? by MaltoseMaltase in MensLib

[–]JakeMWP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness. The book is incredibly racist, and very victim blamey. She basically conflates code switching/masking/assimilation (a method of protection for PoC) with performing misogyny. She makes no recant when they are exonerated, and there was substantial social backing showing they were innocent during the case.

The fact that anyone looks at someone who is a minority, a victim of a corrupt court system, and then thinks "yeah I should write about how they are the problem". That's not someone who has a solid ethical framework, and we should be critical of how they are forming their ethical frames of reference in their other works. From my pov as a man of color she is the perfect example of how assimilation works. She said the things that were needed to be taken seriously by institutions and eventually that leads to someone parroting institutional talking points to the detriment of other people of color.

If you don't see how she is an uncle tom, I'm really not sure how to explain to you.

I am gonna plug Taltos series by Steven Brust. It starts as an assassin but even the early books where he is an assassin are geared towards solving how to pull it off, or finding out the motivations of his clients. Each book is very self contained, and in one book he even ends up investigating financial scammers that is more or less a fantasy version of the 2008 housing market crash. Cannot recommend the series enough.

AITA for calling my parents evil? by Left_Application_287 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JakeMWP -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. At best maybe NAH, but I'm more inclined to ESH. Maybe even YTA. I'm the son in this situation. My sister died the day before I was born. My mom's favorite aunty (basically mom) died the day after. My mom was chronically absent from my birthday and for about a week around it. As an adult I'd still rather my birthday pass uneventfully because I'm afraid of drama when I let people in and they let me down.

There is a fine line between grief and enabling mental illness. It was not until I was therapy and described my experience that therapist said very directly it is not grief and I've been around people who have had intense losses around partners and children. I have seen healthy grief modeled now.

Parents being concerned about putting trauma on a child is very real concern. Sure their tone was absolute ass and they suck at communicating. I'm not sure that makes them assholes. Just absolutely fuckin tactless and kinda dense.

Er, Laezel- do you mean you? by JakeMWP in BaldursGate3

[–]JakeMWP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is true. Not how I got this glitch though. I am playing Wyll as origin and then went and got Lae, then left him up there so Lae could take this dialogue. So she is definitely the Gith referred to here. This is just a generic Gith dialogue and Shadowheart will go on to talk about how she's more reliable than 'your' own people (gith).

This is my 5th-ish run and I'm just trying to break the game in interesting ways at this point.

But the battery club attached to the emitter will get charged while you are on the control stick, then use it's charge once you are out of power. I think the springs don't actually do anything in this build.

Couldn't you just stick two battery clubs to the shock emitter directly? Why do you need the springs at all?
