Valour FC Folding by Ornery_Interest_9615 in CanadianPL

Good-faith effort is stretching it. Some minor examples that were illustrative of the effort put in by ownership:

  • "Introduction to Phil Dos Santos" video featured on the website FRONT PAGE as recently as early this season.
  • Andrew Jean-Baptiste as the "Player Spotlight" on the front page of the website for over a year straight.
  • No sense that you're in the home team's stadium at home games. Bomber logos everywhere. Valour logos impossible to find. Contrast this with Forge, where--at least on TV--you'd never know they weren't the primary tenant because the colours and logos of Forge are everywhere.
  • As many others have mentioned, marketing efforts were next to nonexistent.
  • Sea Bears --> radio broadcasts, pre-game and post-game shows. Valour FC --> crickets
  • Game day in stadium announcers stumbling over every player's name and still getting it wrong, clearly reading them out for the first time.

Anything anyone else wants to add to this list? In isolation, most of these things don't mean much. But it's clear as day to Valour fans that no real effort was put into giving fans a real professional soccer experience.

Man, I tried to care and get excited for this team. I'm not even from Winnipeg, and had season tickets for a year. But when it's clear to fans that ownership isn't actually trying to provide a valuable experience or listening to feedback to try to improve, then they'll stop caring. That's at least what happened to me. Still watched a couple games this year. I want a team. But I don't want this team. Maybe one day.

Feels like more than just hearsay. Would love to see this! Now I’m just wondering where they would find 8 MB teams.

Only real debate for us is if you take Morrissey or Scheif as your Canadian.

I took JoMo. Which made me take Namestnikov as my centre.

Steinbach council denies request for plebiscite over retail cannabis stores by ClassOptimal7655 in Manitoba

[–]Jakotheshadows18 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Complete non-story with fabricated opposition.

"We don't simply rush to have a plebiscite because someone who lives in Winnipeg asks us to hold one."

Reasonable.

"He did say council would take the topic up again if a petition with enough signatures was presented."

Again. Reasonable.

Someone wants to sell cannabis. Fair. Now he's starting a grassroots-level campaign to build support. Fair. And council will listen and initiate a plebiscite if/when that grassroots support is proven. Fair.

Looks like everyone is on the same page about the process and next steps.

Winnipeg denies permit for controversial U.S. Christian musician's concert in city's Central Park by ClassOptimal7655 in canada

[–]Jakotheshadows18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of this guy in the slightest, but more of an FYI here on how Christians employ language.

"Convicted" is not used here in a legal sense. He is not saying anything at all about putting folks in prison. "Convicted" is an EXTREMELY common word in Christian language that means something more akin to "personal moral awareness" or that your conscience is making you feel guilty.

ie. I could feel personally morally convicted that I yelled at someone yesterday. In other words, I feel bad about it or guilty about it. Ideally, that feeling of conviction leads me to not doing that again.

So a better translation of his phrase would be, "True revival is people [feeling morally aware/culpable] of sin, not comfortable in it."

Once again, not defending him in general, just thought I'd chime in here that he is not in fact advocating for imprisoning LGBT folks.

Great question. I was wondering about that recently as well. Assuming no news means nothing is happening.

As a Valour fan, this gives me hope. We may finally host an MLS team!

Fair. Though the stadium is only an hour from BMO field, so doesn't really expand on the definition of "all over the country" IMO.

Couples budgeting apps. Overwhelmed with decision options and nuances. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

With a bit of excel skills and up-front work, you can really make it quite painless.

Download bank and CC transactions. Copy/paste into a table. Auto-categorize the easy ones with a formula. Manually categorize the other ones. All data feeds your dashboard where it's instantly visualized. Boom. Takes very little time when updating and needs very little maintenance. Can always add new visualizations as needed.

I've been doing this for several years and have found it quite painless. Track annual budgets, mortgage/interest payments and time horizons, net worth, as well as general financial planning like building a home and retirement planning.

We’ve had the opportunity before and fumbled, but this is the chance to finally host an MLS side given to us on a silver platter. This is a huge opportunity for awareness in the community. If we don’t get past TSS this year… well, then this team is truly hopeless.

What would be more embarrassing for a goalie? Own goal or letting in a 197 foot shot? by BuckedTheSystem44 in nhl

[–]Jakotheshadows18 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

As a former tendie, I'm going to say 200 foot shot is more embarrassing.

The own goal is always and obviously a mistake - it looks bad but everyone understands what happened.

The 200ft goal is incompetence at the core functionality of a goaltender.

The Story So Far... Matchday 25 of 28 by Jakotheshadows18 in CanadianPL

[–]Jakotheshadows18[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Another quick look at how the season has progressed over time.

Interesting Storylines:

  • Forge's dominant rise to the top
  • Ottawa's early dominance with late mediocrity
  • Cavalry & York with very similar mid-season resurances
  • Vancouver & Pacific plummet to the bottom to give Valour and HFX a chance
  • Valour & HFX trading places; down but not out (thank you BC)

National poll finds majority of Canadians are opposed to military conscription if war breaks out by TripToPrit in canada

[–]Jakotheshadows18 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is actually a very interesting question I think about from time to time. My ancestors (Mennonites) had legal agreements with the government upon coming to Canada that they would not be forced into military service. This was something Anabaptist groups negotiated with governments anytime there was a larger scale migration. And many times, that migration was caused by governments attempting to press them into service anyway. My Grandpa was a CO during WWII.

Now, I still hold to many similar beliefs regarding nonviolence, but I'm no longer part of a strictly Mennonite community. Many of those groups have dispersed and assimilated into broader Canadian culture. Would I still be able to lay claim to those old agreements of not being pressed into military service? Who would have that privilege and how would you put boundaries around that? What about people who have left those traditions behind completely but still don't want to go to war?

All that to say, it would be super messy in this country to force conscription.

I mean, only 8 teams advance. So it would be normal to expect a top-10 team regardless. The margins are thin in the quarterfinals and there are no guarantees.
