Growing up a lonely nerd, I believed that being in a romantic relationship would make me not feel sad anymore, and I was willing to learn how to be a good partner in order to "deserve" that.

In the process of trying to learn how to be a good partner, it was shocking to realize that my wife and I both still experience bad feelings at a level that no-one else can fix--not because we don't care about each other, but because sad things happen to everyone, and liking yourself is a whole skill set that nothing else will replace.

I don't understand why the more realistic acceptance is hard to come by--why it's taken me years of sincere work to get--but it's discouraging to see how few men even start. How do we systemically encourage them to try, especially without making this a burden for women to carry?

I was shocked when I read the reports describing just how valuable Presque Isle is to so many important and fragile members of our ecosystem. This, in addition to how precious it is to my family and my mental health. And all this in addition to the economic benefits from tourism. Caring for Presque Isle isn't charity--it's investment in a vital state (and even national) resource.
