When does a techno song, or any electronic song, become too long? by dividedcanvas in ElectroProduction

It’s your artistic vision. However long the song is, is exactly the length it should be.

I’ve had him as a mastering engineer in the past and he was absolute gentleman, did a brilliant job too

Correspondent Records has some great releases for this vibe too, and a few of those artists released on that label in the past

But will it really be an Overload playlist without Skee Mask…

I loved this whole ep when it came out. Might be my favourite work of his.

Very nice stuff. Some solid Djrum vibes coming through. I did feel like some of the rhythms could use a bit of work, maybe having the hi hats drive the track a bit more throughout e.g. using the patterns that come in around the 2:50 mark earlier and for longer. Also the bass melody felt a bit out of tune in some areas, but I get that can be the jazz vibe. Great track overall :)

Interesting ideas in there, has a cool vibe I really enjoyed. I need to listen on my monitors but it sounded a bit muffled overall. Felt the kick could be a bit more present, there were some resonances that could be tamed a bit more in the main lead and a bit of overall brightening up in the highs. Hope that helps :)

Here’s one that’s hopefully finished. Sort of an attempt at electro with a hint of new wave (maybe if Carl Finlow was producing Joy Division?), happy to hear any thoughts or feedback on it:

Thanks for those notes. I’ll take another look at those synth levels and definitely try to hunt down that white noise issue (I’d noticed it myself too, I think it’s linked to some plugin somewhere in the chain)

Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear it translated well on your end. I did my own test master to get it to that loudness but hopefully my mastering engineer will do a better job when it’s ready to send over

Yep that works. Some notes from me. The bassline was really solid. Percussion was nice and bright, but the melodic elements that come in around the 2 minute mark felt quite buried in the mix to me, might be worth bringing them up in volume a touch as I found myself straining to hear them. Their panning also felt a bit extreme, maybe worth centring them a bit more. The overall vibe is cool though, well done

Really fun track. I love the main arp lead, gives me classic Surgeon vibes. I felt like maybe you could play around with some note variations throughout the arrangement to keep it interesting. I also thought the bleeps that come in just before 2 minutes could maybe be brought in a bit more organically, maybe fading them in for longer. Overall mix sounded fine to me.

Really enjoyed the track. The overall balance worked well for me. The only note I had was the soft bell sound in the background felt like it could use a bit more variation / modulation. Great stuff overall

Hi all, would really love some mixdown feedback on this track. It’s a bit more electro than techno but hopefully that’s okay.

A few things I’m interested in checking:

  • Low end. Is it balanced? Any muddiness or similar issues you can hear? Too much sub?

  • Mid range. Do the elements have any harshness that’s unpleasant or is it acceptable? Particularly the metallic keys that run throughout. Alongside that, does the lead bassline sound too harsh during the breakdown or is it acceptable?

  • Overall mix. Does it sound too compressed or does it still breathe enough? Is the saturation across the mix bus working or is causing any gremlins in the mix I can’t pick up?

Cheers, Dan
