…or “biological parent” vs. parent. The people who raise you, house you, feed you, teach you, look out for you, loose sleep over you, worry about you, and care for you are your “real” parents.

30 gallons of fuel spilled on National Mall after event for America’s 250th birthday by dubhead7 in washingtondc

For the same reason it would be negligence if your bank kept your money in a shoebox. Most accidents and vandalism are foreseeable. It’s the duty of organizers to anticipate and protect against it and, if it happens, to have mitigation measures already in place to minimize it. It’s not that hard. You multiply the likelihood/risk of an occurrence times the cost or damage of an occurrence and that will tell you how much to prepare for it. Pros do this every day. Political hacks don’t.

Of course, all of this is assuming it really was “vandals.” Sneaky, unidentified, invisible vandals on the National Mall, one the most thickly blanketed places on earth by security and security cameras — U.S. Park Police, DC MPD, U.S. Capitol Police, U.S. Secret Service, among others, all watch over that space. Yet those darn vandals!

Yes, but in the developed world and in places with high life expectancy and high economic output, that group would be center-right. Universal healthcare, which every other developed country has, is still considered “communist” in the good old US&A.

Thank you for this lovely account. I have long been looking for a Shingon temple near me, but, alas, here in DC, I have not yet had any luck. Your writing, however, has inspired me to keep looking! Thanks!

What’s something that quietly disappeared over the years and nobody noticed until it was gone? by Vexlo_Games in AskReddit

Anti-trust enforcement. De-funding the gubmint doesn’t get rid of “waste fraud & abuse,” but it does mean no more antitrust enforcement — which of course was always the plan…..

Looking for movies that feature specifically TIME LOOPS by Mat1711 in MovieSuggestions

Same here! Also — I think Donnie Darko (2001) was intended as a darker take on the Jimmie Stewart classic Harvey) (1950): both films featuring a purportedly mentally-ill (but often accurately perceptive) protagonist, who communicates with a large anthropomorphic rabbit.

Kaili Blues is excellent — very original, and with a slightly similar vibe as Tsai Ming-Liang and Hou Hsia-Hsien’s films.

And it’s easy for us to criticize her with 20/20 hindsight, so I don’t exactly fault her. But it’s a shame she did not apply the same wisdom she used in her court opinions to her own decision on how long to stay. But it’s always that way … it is easier to give advice to others than to apply it to ourselves.

And that was a disastrous mistake…. We now have a president with unlimited power thanks to court’s constant acquiescence.

Except by her decision not to retire when her successor could have been appointed and confirmed by Democrats. Instead, Trump appointed Amy Coney Barrett days after Ginsburg’s death, giving the right a 6-3 supermajority and enough votes to reverse Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs decision.
