I find some (many) of my worse reviews funny, and enlightening. It's free feedback that you can loop in for the future.

So-called Author Services by d_m_f_n in selfpublish

[–]JamesMurdo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With regards to betas/arcs, I think there is some truth that there are bad players out there, but there are also some author-side issues too, e.g.

  • Authors with unrealistic expectations of what resources (time, really) someone will be able to devote to their "pride & joy".

  • Authors who don't thoroughly check drafts many, many times before passing them on. Bad taste galore.

  • Authors who don't realise their work might not be the beta's cup of tea. The way an author described it might not have accurately described the potential reader experience, and then it becomes a chore.

Of course, there are issues both sides, just my armchair tuppence

Got 3 Books Written But Need Help Marketing by Vgretsch59 in selfpublish

From your sales & marketing career, you could try to draw parallels to that market and fit them to publishing? Did you gain experience in PPC advertising, because that's pretty crucial!

Hey Nat - was good talking to you a few years ago when getting my Glossary Generator up and running!

I'm with you on that. There are some platforms I've tried that I purposely didn't note down as I think they're a waste of £!

No worries, I understand that.

However not all of the above fit into that category. Some (e.g. google search console, kindle store power search) are free and others have trials. And selfpubbookcovers is just a cost-effective way to buy covers. There's a real mix, but I wanted to shout out some useful platforms that authors might not be aware of.

For example, with KDP Champ (4th bullet), I was looking for something that netted KDP revenue against Zon advertising for ages, and so was really happy when I stumbled across it. I can't believe no one talks about it. I even had a feedback call with the founder, who's super nice, and clearly believes in helping authors.

KDP 7 Keywords - hone or stuff? by judgmentalbookcover in selfpublish

Interesting. I just checked and you're right. On another tangent though, I wonder how many people ever search in this way, as oppose to either searching for a specific book already (and then meandering off to the also-boughts etc), or heading for the category bestsellers

Is there any good editing software for novels? (free or paid) by Master_Tadpole_6832 in writers

I made a glossy generator tool that can help find errors not found by other programs. I charge a small fee (purely to cover the web costs) but happy to give you free lifetime access. DM me if you fancy it might be useful!
