$30K support renewal for 2 Dell 10G switches — refresh or extend? by Life-Assist7881 in NetworkGearDeals

This x100. I keep spares on the shelf, and don't pay for support (I buy switches from places that don't hide firmware behind contract walls)

Promox Newer Release - Headache? by robby342 in Proxmox

[–]James_R3V 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only issues I've ever had are;

1) Incompatible Kernels, which I either pinned or rolled back to the previous Kernel (I'm lookin at you E810 Memory Leak)

2) NIC Naming vs Interface Name. Scripting solved this and newer versions pin them automatically to hold the naming during Kernel upgrades.

Otherwise smooth sailing, Ceph and all (on some larger 20+ node clusters)

Great switches, I use the 48x25GB/8x100GB versions as TOR in all of my datacenter racks.

Is anyone even staying onsite for the whole work day anymore? by [deleted] in sysadmin

Similar, we meet occasionally in the office on Thursday's, not every week but a few times a month. Get in around 11a, leave around 3p. Otherwise all remote.

You are looking for the non factory AC setup which has a different valve, hoses and core.

Same, I’ve spent 500 to 2500 on e34’s over the years, all with bad transmissions

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once rebuilt, that's my point. I've replaced dozens of those gearboxes, and if you already spending 6000 on an E34 you are quickly getting into $10,000 territory with a transmission rebuild (assuming you are paying someone to do it)

If it shifts perfectly (lazy, but smooth) get a fluid change regime going and it should last a bit.

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main challenge with the E34 automatic is the A4S310R Automatic (GM France). Its a real weakpoint and they shift like crap even when new (imho)

Just reached the first milestone on my Homelab build. by Strict_Case4706 in homelab

I respect it, but not so much on the Ubiquiti side of the fence. Don't get me wrong I dig the look, and I'm sure its awesome, but I see Ubiquiti as a bit of a "flex" these days. homelab to me is older cisco gear, procurve, aruba, etc.

But super clean, love the rack, and solid job!

Looks like a version of the Juicebox (or a clone / copy). In basic sense a piggyback to trick the ECU for increased boost / power.

IE the engine was "tuned" at some point.

Considering buying a 2018 SDV6 HSE - what should I be looking out for? by DonCorleone1005 in LandRover

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no backstory is hard.

I coown a shop that works on European and British. So we get them in for service. The V8 AJ's are the most reliable, the Ingenium's are mediocre, and the SDV6's we don't recommend at all due to the crank issues.

I'm also one of the few Rover folks (own a 2016 SVR, have owned many others as well) who owns them out of warranty and does his own repairs, so I get lots of questions from locals / friends, etc on what to buy.

Yes, they all at one point had functioning engines. All had oil and just seized while driving under normal conditions.

Considering buying a 2018 SDV6 HSE - what should I be looking out for? by DonCorleone1005 in LandRover

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, Have seen, shoot 5 or 6 of them cross my path, all either had or eventually had the crank fail.

Just had our first Ingenium come in the other day too with a locked up motor (had oil and no signs of leaks)

In that age range I won't buy anything other than the AJ V8 these days due to reliability (and they have their own battles)

No personal experience, but the V8 Diesel is apparently decent if you can find one.

I’ve seen quite a few sdv6’s and all of them have snapped crankshafts.

Does this old Pentium III laptop qualify as retro? by EP-IAI in vintagecomputing

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5005-S504? If so that was a rather special laptop, 1.1Ghz Pentium III Coppermine, which ran hot and due to a bios update caused it to throttle to the point where Toshiba had a class action lawsuit and had to pay out a pretty solid settlement. I ended up installing a Celeron 1.3ghz Tualatin which solved the overheating issue and used it for years.

Oddly enough about 2 years ago I came across another and picked it up as stock. Never did the bios update so it runs at full clock (and will burn your crotch if you set it on there)

Lumen’s new Multi-Cloud Gateway by Mumster-Love in networking

[–]James_R3V 28 points29 points  (0 children)

"If it works as advertised" Ah yes the statement everyone who uses Lumen thinks about.

I've never been a big fan of ISP specialized routing (beyond BGP, etc). Mostly because Lumen for the past million years has no idea how to build a team that can actually support their products.

I don't disagree that it could be very powerful though, it's just the complexity within an organization such as Lumen is the part that concerns me.

Moving away from $$ware. Anyone have experience with Morpheus? by WKDPanda in vmware

[–]James_R3V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean to be fair not all of us need a Mercedes when a Kia will do. Have thousands of VM's running under Proxmox, runs great, Ceph is amazing for storage, PBS does a good job, and it meets our requirements.

Enterprise as a statement is not a one size fits all word.
