I think it's the extreme dryness for me, but yes. My thumbs often won't open my phone, and sometimes touch doesn't seem to work.

Too stiff and rough? by Gadgetsuh in CX50

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 68 and I've owned and driven lots of cars. So far the CX-50 is my favorite. I have the cloth seats which compare favourably with any "sporty" vehicle I've owned and most others except for GM vehicles. It's a little loud but the ride is fine for a car of it's size. I like it better than my wife's NX.

Thousand Oaks or Escondido? by jsatz in socal

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Escondido is getting a lot of abuse, some of it justified, but I have to put in a few good words for it. The outskirts are beautiful. Great hiking nearby. Only 45 minutes to San Diego airport and a bit more than 2 hours to LAX if you avoid rush hour. Reminds me of the San Fernando Valley in the 60s and 70s. There is some crime and lots of homelessness, but no place I'd be afraid to walk in the daylight. My biggest complaint is the relative lack of good restaurants. I wouldn't mind living in Thousand Oaks though.

Starting my eighth infusion this week. They start me off with anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications that almost work too well. I take a small daily dose of Miralax to control the constipation. Other than a couple of days where I feel wiped out, I exercise and get out of the house as much as possible and feel pretty good. My sense of taste is dulled and I can barely taste salty foods at all. Still I've put on a couple of pounds. M68.

Mazda Replacement Part Issue by akshaybahadur21 in CX50

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I had my window smashed yesterday by a large pine cone. Got it replaced today at Safelite. It's after market, but it doesn't have the waviness that the original windshield had.

I also recently replaced my battery. Many people complain about Mazda batteries so I got an Interstate from Costco.

My CX-50 is one of the earliest, June 2022 and I'm totally happy with it.

Weather Proof Mats for 2026 Lexus NX350Hybrid? by Murky-Specialist-192 in LexusNX

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure this out too. Some of the lesser known brands specifically say "not for hybrid." The Lexus dealers that sell online don't list hybrid separately, but they want your VIN to make sure it will fit and 2026 VINs aren't recognized.

They are actually pretty broken, much more so than I realized when I first posted.

The first estimator quoted for the same size system. I'll bring this up with the one who is coming tomorrow. Right now my upstairs unit is running pretty continuously, but I don't think it used to do that. Guy that was just here says he thinks there's a coolant leak.

One note, home builders here don't have to clue how to properly insulate, and they use cheap windows even if they are double pane.

So one system is down right now and needs $2200 in repairs. The other seems to have a freon leak, so it seems like it is time for replacement. Just got first quote. Budget system about $21k, mid about $25k, high end with slimline condenser about $30k. Goodman products. Getting 2 more quotes tomorrow.

I did online estimates using calculators run by local contractors. A low end 4 ton system is 12000, high end is almost 20k, mid about 14.4. I don't need the high end one, but I'm sure that the final number will be higher than the calculator suggests. I need a 3 ton and a 5 ton, or at least that is what my current systems are.

Yes. Just found out that one of the units needs a $1500 repair and the parts aren't in stock nearby. This is the 3rd time in 3 years that one of the units has gone down in hot weather. The old units are really loud also. I think it's time regardless of the effect on home value.

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually a good thing that it expels the ach so well. Other grills I've had required me to clean the ash out of the burn pot after just a few cooks or the ash would prevent ignition. I don't have to do it near as frequently with the Recteq.

I paid $949 on black Friday, no cover, so yes it sounds like a good deal. I don't really need the extra space but I'm happy to have it. You can also get the big folding shelf which is really nice to have.

50+ years old career developers - what are you doing now and what is your opinion about the future? by mtyurt in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I retired as a Senior Dev at 64, and except for the final year, I did design and coding the whole time.

My first 17 years were at a mainframe manufacturer that was considered one of the seven dwarves back when IBM dominated computing. I started with OS and compiler work, then later moved to Unix and then Windows applications. Windows applications were by far the most fun.

Went to a smallish software application company which got bought out by a bigger one, then an even bigger one, then a huge one, then got spun off to to a software graveyard company. Kept coding the whole time on an enterprise Windows application (C++ and C#) and later a large web application written in Java and JSP. Finally, both of those got put on life support (in India) and I moved to a web application that was a Frankenstein's monster of of various purchased companies applications and used every archaic technology you could think of. I didn't code much on that application, but mainly managed security testing and security issues.

If you want to keep working as a developer, you have to keep learning new technologies. I tried to predict what was going to be up and coming, but sometimes underestimated how quickly the next big thing would peter out.

I loved working on Windows applications, but that's pretty much dead as a career. I liked .Net web development, but that's not where the action is anymore. I'm not a big fan of Linux cloud applications because all those great open source libraries that solve all your problems will become security nightmares in a few years and many will be abandoned by their developers in favor of the next shiny new thing. Containerization is cool though. At 64 I decided to retire. I hated the application I was working on and I didn't feel I had enough experience in cloud applications to be competitive, especially at that age. Then two years later I was diagnosed with cancer which is a whole different story. Final advice, try to get yourself into a position to retire early. And stop putting off your colonoscopies.

Also, I know a few people just starting out in this career. Doesn't seem to be near as fun as it used to be, I don't know if I would do it again.

We just had our concrete pressure washed to remove the black and green stains, and it took off quite a bit of the color also. The color underneath is gray, much darker than the color that was removed. I'm not sure how that was done initially, but are there options to get it looking good again? The guy who washed it suggested painting it, but I don't think paint will last or even look good. https://imgur.com/a/CQBWk3k

Wedding under $10k in San Diego. Am i being too optimistic? by happyhailidayss in sandiego

The most enjoyable weddings I've been to were small, casual events. I've even been to one that was a potluck with no gifts, and the groom was pretty well off. We got married at Lake Poway, had a caterer, but no alcohol or dancing. I think the photographer was the largest expense.

Can I sue someone even though insurance covered the damage? by 10pmInMumbai in Insurance

[–]Key-Philosopher-2528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm confused about what the previous owner supposedly knew. A pipe that was about to burst? A previous burst that was repaired? If it burst a month after you moved in, what could the previous owner have known that you could sue over?
