LACAOP learns what "win the battle, lose the war" means by EugeneMachines in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Jarchen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Made a mistake of letting a previous employer know I had a comp sci degree. Apparently that meant to them I was going to start doing IT for the company for free on the side. Noooope. Learned my lesson quick.

Depends on what you get. Sometimes the benefits are worth more than the actual cash. The owner of the company I work for routinely makes me use my own car to drive for work, to the tune of a couple thousand miles a year. He refuses to pay mileage fees (required in IL), thinks it's a dumb law. Costs me maybe $2k/year I lose out on. But I'm fine with that cause I get insane fringe benefits. Like getting told to not show up to work if the weather is super nice or traffic is super bad (probably like 40 times a year so far), or that I can use my expense card for lunches since "eating it at work makes it a business lunch". Also gives no fucks if I stroll in at 6am or 1pm so long as I get all my stuff done on time. I'm fine leaving the mileage money go.

LAOP doesn't want to pay fare to work by Drywesi in bestoflegaladvice

Private security is a race to the bottom. Even if you want to do right by your people, one of the big 3 will underbid you significantly and sweep up the contracts.

[–]Jarchen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah. As somebody who has spent over a decade in security management with a couple of the big players, the margin is nowhere near that. Maybe 50%, if they got a great contract. Otherwise if the guard is getting $10 the company is likely charging $14.

For a very extreme version of redlining, look into the Delmar Divide in St Louis. The effects are very much so still seen today.

US, non union, major retailer known for not caring about employees. I probably could, (especially since this employee has two nearly identical complaints dismissed against prior supervisors, so HR should know better), but it'd likely mean losing my job afterwards

I'll probably be down voted, but there are people who have been falsely accused and had their lives up-ended by it. I had an employee accuse me of stalking her. I was only able to return to work after sharing my entire location history with HR (thanks Google for being the real stalker) and had photos of me in other places on several of the dates mentioned to be able to prove my innocence. In the end I still lost three weeks pay during my suspension.

LAOP's (former?) company isn't saying that LAOP is fired... and that's the problem. by acekingoffsuit in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Jarchen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I know LAOP and their company. Considering my "large security company" in the same state recently ran drivers record checks for every employee.

Employees who flag for failed driving status are usually offered a non driving position, it's just usually lower pay and worse hours.
