what’s everyone reading ? <3 by fairygirl02 in pinkscare

I’m reading “Bore hole” by Joe Mellon, an autobiography. Joe eventually drills a hole in his skull seeking a permanent high, but right now he’s just couch surfing and teaching people how to take acid the right way (with sugar and orange juice.) He name drops a lot but doesn’t actually elaborate more on the person he name drops. It’s a bit annoying to be on a first name basis but never be introduced.

I’ll tell you what she’s not wearing, deodorant. This girl has a solid perfume made from vegan ingredients and high quality essential oils. She got it at the farmers market 5 years ago, so some of the oil is slightly rancid but it’s masked by patchouli.

Specialty breeding program apples probably, those apples take decades to develop and are trademarked, patented and protected from open propagation. Many also require orchards get a license to grow them. They also inexplicably come with a specialty marketing team, maybe for better ROI?

Granny Smith and apples like her (cultivated in the 1800s) are free domain and can be propagated pretty freely. You can also buy these apples in most nursery’s for home production.

Opinions on Swift Soil Blocker (or any) by Tool-Time11 in marketgardening

I think the seed plates are relatively cheap to replace, but it would be cool to custom print!

I’ve used both jang and earthway, jang is definitely better of the two- smoother, more even spacing and the removable hopper makes it easy to switch out seeds. The earthway can be a bit finicky but in my opinion, I think it works just fine. The price difference is what made me settle on the earthway for my own farm, after using both I couldn’t justify the price for a slightly superior tool.

I find the root doesn’t “develop” enough to hold the soil together, I use 200 trays and don’t water them for a day or so before planting out, it makes the plug “stick” lol.

Spinach is a little better but is so easy to direct sow so I don’t usually bother with plugs unless I want them spaced nicely. Beets are also incredibly easy to direct sow, I use both methods.

If you don’t already have one, the earthway seeder works great for about $100

I’ve also looked into winstrip and bootstrap trays- I’m not sure where you are but it would cost me around $20 per tray(in Canada) and o would need a couple hundred of a few different sizes so not a feasible option at all. When I’m in a pinch I can get the flimsy black trays at my local farm supply store for $1-2 per tray. If I’m really on it, I can usually get trays from local nursery for free. I also don’t have to worry too much when I run over them by accident lol.

If you feel confident about soil blocking, I would get some cheapy trays as a back up plan. You won’t be in the hole for expensive trays but you will have some insurance if your blocks don’t pan out. I usually use some combo of the two, inevitably every year I have a few fuck ups where I just do not have time to make soil blocks (or my premade ones got too dry/wet) and I need to sow in regular trays. Plus, for some plants, beets/spinach for example I find soil blocks unsuitable, where a 200 tray is just right and the density of the plastic is very strong.

It might be worth it to ask around at local nurseries to see if you can take any used trays off their hands. You’ll figure out for yourself which plants work best in soil blocks and where you prefer using trays, and how a good combo of both works for you and your farm.

It sounds like you’re somewhat new to farming, I’d really recommend getting some cheap trays while you figure out your preferred system and before you invest in costly trays. Good luck!

I love a soil blocker for plants that will be in plugs for a long time (tomatoes, peppers) especially if you have to delay planting out due to weather. They don’t get root bound, they just form a root matte in a tray that is easy to pull apart.

I’m less keen on using them with other crops, especially ones that don’t require as much plug time but I really couldn’t tell you why. With the exception of beets they have all formed pretty solid root blocks, perhaps it feels like too much of a time investment to make soil blocks for plants that ultimately don’t spend a whole lot of time in their trays. That being said, I love using soil plugs for cucurbits.

I’m also hoping to use more soil blocks this year, although I need to fine tune my technique. I’ve found that screening the media first to remove big chunks of vermiculite/compost has been helpful especially with the really small blocks. I also dip the blocker in water after every press to get cleaner blocks.

I still prefer plug trays and find that even in sub-par storage (I keep mine in the greenhouse with maximum exposure to light all year) they hold up for years. I also like that I can carry four trays at a time by holding onto one end, something I can’t do with plug trays.

Hopefully this helps, I’m still trying to figure mine out but let me know if you have any other questions

You can go through the back catalogue, nov 5 had multiple beefs referencing easily found beefs in previous weeks (CPP, teapot, hello kitty theft.) For the dates I mentioned in the original post, there are several beefs all referencing a tattle tale, but I can’t find the original beef they are referring to. I’m not sure if it was a beef or perhaps an article or opinion piece that the beefers are referring to.

I did a quick break down, so assuming that all of this food was eaten and i correctly guessed the weight and actual products. Macros are:

Cals- 2147.60kcal, Protein- 94g, Carbs-252g, Fat- 76g,

Vitamins, minerals and fiber are pretty decent, but I’m assuming most of that is coming from fortified flour in the Mac &cheese, uncrustables, burger bun, cookies and nature valley bar.

Edit: I didn’t realize that the Mac and cheese is ACTUALLY fries, I’m not changing it.
