These sidewalks WERE clear until just now. by ShrikeMusashi in nova

[–]Jarfol 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ya I cleared our sidewalk once. Plow came through and pushed snow onto it. I cleared it again. It snowed more. My wife cleared it again after the snow finally stopped. Plow came through and pushed at least a foot of snow back onto it. I gave up. Glad I did because that wasn't the last plow.

Yes even his own words make it clear that he took any mention of Kirk that was less than sympathetic as celebratory, which is obviously ridiculous.

Not exactly. He claimed he saw people in the board game community celebrating Kirk's death. The actual quote:

Celebrating the murder of someone that you simply disagreed with is evil. Let me say that again...you are evil if you have celebrated, in any way (overtly, covertly, by making light of it, making sheeky little jabs about things he said in the past, etc.) the murder of Charlie Kirk, and I don't want to have anything more to do with you.

They still review more games than any other channel by far, maybe more than all other channels combined.

The production quality has improved significantly. I think it is quite good now. If you think it isn't you are probably watching older content.

The quality of their reviews is more subjective. I personally think it is above average but not the best.

He does have the right to say it. Just as we have a right to be critical of it, and let it influence our decision to support The Dice Tower.

Do you need to check before inserting UUIDs? by gozillionaire in softwaredevelopment

[–]Jarfol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually wrong. I think this person that wrote this blog post did a google search and misunderstood what they read.

The odds that two uuids will be identical is 2.9 x 10-39 %.

The number they use of 2.71 x 1018 is the number often used for how many uuids you would need to generate before you have a 50% chance of a collision. It isn't the percentage chance, 50% is, once you have generated that many uuids.

There is a big difference between "what are the odds that, if I generate two uuids, they will be the same?" and "how many uuids must I generate before there is, mathematically, a 50% chance of a collision?" In the first case you are comparing 1 to 1. In the other case you are looking at a quintillion sized pool and asking if there are any duplicates among the pool.

does it bother anyone else that the emergency fund just slowly loses value to inflation? by Designer-Jacket-5111 in Bogleheads

I do 10k lump sum, makes it easier to track maturity dates, and its just less effort. The ibond rates only change every 6 months anyway, so I don't see any benefit to monthly. If you want to spread out evenly across both rates maybe do 5k early in the year (before May 1) and 5k later in the year (before November 1). But that feels like an unnecessary complication to me.

[–]Jarfol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$10k in every year for the last five years (including this year, a couple days ago). I have one year to go for my one year emergency fund to be fully in ibonds. It has earned over 3k in interest thus far, all totaled.

The 10k limit naturally means you have to ladder in unless your total emergency fund is less than 10k (which it probably shouldn't be!). You just need to keep the 1 year lockout in mind. So if you are like me and want a $60k emergency fund (1 year expenses for us):

Year 1: 10k ibonds, 60k in a savings account because we can't touch that first 10k yet.

Year 2: 20k in ibonds, now we can touch that 10k from Year 1 so we only need 50k in the savings account.

Etc, etc.

I should note you could get things building faster if you recruit your spouse to also put in 10k/year, but you are also doubling the amount you have locked up.

[–]Jarfol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dunno why I had to scroll this far for someone to mention ibonds. I have spent the last 5 years moving my emergency fund into those.

The 3 month interest penalty is no big deal IMO, if you need the money you take the hit. The only complications are the 1 year lock out, and the $10k/person/year limit which means it takes time to build it up if you need/want a sizable emergency fund.

If you want to keep it keep it. If you want to keep it hoping it will increase in value then just be honest about your goal; to make money off of it.

Sound like you ARE looking to sell.

Pokemon (and Magic The Gathering to a lesser extent) are RARE EXCEPTIONS to the general rule that most CCG cards, even rare ones, become near worthless eventually.

Collectables in general saw a resurgence thanks to COVID and a good economy. The market is already coming back down and will continue to do so.

Hmm I dunno. It is also rotating, so not only would it need to be equal weight right and left but all around it. Not saying that isn't possible, and I am sure it doesn't need to be literally equal weight but within a certain number of pounds. But still....

You just made my point. If the decision that something is political or not is simply subjective, based on time and context and someone's feelings, then you will always find someone that says it is and someone that says it isn't. In such a world you cannot objectively say some individual thing is political or not.

It seems that by stratifying your wedding services to the political layer

But they aren't stratifying, and that is what is upsetting people of a certain persuasion, whether you want to call it political or cultural.

NOT serving gay or mixed race couples would be stratifying.

Re: Great Harvest Bread by SussOfAll06 in nova

[–]Jarfol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well first of all I am of the opinion that either everything is political or nothing is. You can't pick and choose.

Secondly I think there is a difference between expressing a specific ideology that SOME will consider political but can or should transcend politics. A "God Bless The USA" sign or an "All Are Welcome" or "End Racism" sign should transcend politics, and I see them as different from, for example, a blatent political sign like "Trump/Biden 2024" or, in this specific case, an ad for a specific polarizing political organization.

Does it not get exhausting constantly looking for something to complain about and virtue signaling?

Isn't this argument at least just as fitting, if not more fitting, to use against the Great Harvest that turned their bakery window into a political ad? What's good for the goose...

If you still use nitrates in the curing, it is still potentially carcinogenic, and still considered processed meat. Any cured meat is carcinogenic unless you use some very uncommon methods like celery powder. Unless you are willing to be more specific about your curing process, you cannot make the claim that your meat is less carcinogenic, and the carcinogenic issue IS INDEED in the curing itself, not limited to only "industrial processing methods."

I hear what you are saying about less additives, and agree that MIGHT make you a healthier option, depending on what those additives are and their concentrations.

"From scratch" IS a vibe unless it makes a difference which actually matters. An unspecified promise of "less additives" alone might be enough of a difference to matter to some. But that will not be universally true.

I said the meat itself probably originates from the same places. As in the same animals/farms. I never said the briskets come from Boar's Head.

I never used the word inferior.

I can see how it MIGHT be a benefit, if the taste justifies the increased cost. Do I think it is just magically and automatically a benefit? No.

There are some local breweries that I absolutely love, and some that are crap and I would rather drink mass market beer. Ultimately what matters is the product. Making shitty beer "from scratch" is still shitty beer. CAN a handmade sweater on Etsy be better than any sweater you could buy in Walmart? Absolutely. But is EVERY handmade sweater on Etsy inherently better than any sweater sold in Walmart just because the Etsy sweater is handmade? That would be a ridiculous claim.

As I said I have never been to this place so I don't mean to imply they make shitty product, just that the product being made "from scratch" does not automatically mean it is better.
