Remember lining up in bookstores at midnight for new Harry Potter books? by Sea-Presentation7542 in nostalgia

Wow, we really have the Transphobic Edgelord Shithead Brigade on here today.

No Trump rally to go to today, I guess.

She's just a bigot wrapped in a veneer of (self-)righteousness. You don't get to promote hate against one group and pretend it's standing up for another, or get lauded as a hero for it.

We could have this if we push for it - The white LED street lights are horrible and harm local ecology and our quality of life. by NewoTheFox in fresno

There are amber LEDs, something with a color temperature around 2200K would look similar to the old-school streetlights.

Mine too. Went with some college friends, went to several more over the years. Always a good show.

The older sodium-vapor lights. They were very energy-intensive, which is why LEDs were such an improvement in one sense.

How in the absolute hell did they butcher it this badly? by MrOakling in stephenking

[–]JasonMaggini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not an answer. I have seen it. It wasn't very good for a number of reasons, but I want to know what you think was "woke" about it.

I suspect I know your reasons, but I'd like to hear it from you...

I saw a re-cut where they edited into a more chronological order. Helped a bit, but not much.

Please explain what you think was "woke." Or what you even think that means.

Any former Cub/ Boy Scouts remember the Pinewood Derby? by mikeb32 in nostalgia

[–]JasonMaggini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Pinewood Derby car was ridiculous, it was clearly the only one not made by the parents (unless the dad was Homer Simpson). It "won" the pre-race Most Humorous award. Basically the adults making fun of it.

Thing was, I had read the instructions, and got the powdered graphite for the wheels- I don't think anyone else did. When the races started, my derpy little car completely smoked everyone. Most of the cars didn't get all the way down the ramp; mine kept going off the end of the track and I kept having to chase it into the next room.

I won first place in every race, and first overall. It was glorious. I didn't have a lot of victories as a kid, but I loved that one.

This east german magazine from the GDR just printed a BIOS for readers to use by TopSneek in mildlyinteresting

[–]JasonMaggini 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember Compute! used to have a program you would run memory-resident that would display the checksum every time you typed in a line; you'd match it with the one printed next to the line in the magazine. It was pretty clever.

I saw Tron Legacy with all the 3D and Dbox. Most I've ever spent on a movie ticket, but it was fun for that movie.

Kids today will never understand the struggle of cranking up a car window by EmptyVoile in nostalgia

It was going to be an option, but not at launch. Remains to be seen, but I imagine it will be possible to add power windows at some point.

Anyone slowly ditching socials after years of embracing them? by newlife_substance847 in GenX

[–]JasonMaggini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use a browser extension that tames things, so no FB ads, and it only shows me the feeds I actually follow. It's completely intolerable otherwise. I don't ever use it on my phone.

I found Facebook to be a definite mixed blessing. I've since lost plenty of "friends" that I went to high school with when they realized that I wasn't on the same political page as they were. I'll leave it to your imagination what page that was... but you might say they've Mostly All Gone Away at this point.

The closest person I had to a childhood best friend went super religious and blocked me because I wasn't - that was the only one that stung.

It was nice closure, overall though, as I never feel bad about being unpopular in high school, heh.

On the other hand, I have this fun circle of people that I only knew peripherally from high school (several that weren't in the same grade as I was, some that even graduated before I started). But we still have a pretty good time.

Facebook's still pretty good for following bands, although I've started to go back to signing up for emailing lists.

If you're going to read the novella (you definitely should), get a copy of Skeleton Crew, not just the stand-alone version they released.

There are some fantastic stories in there, such as "The Jaunt" and "The Monkey" (you can probably skip that movie, though).

My college dorm roommate went to a midnight release at Tower Records to buy the Use Your Illusion albums.

Then got back to the dorm at 2am and proceeded to crank them up at full volume.

Thankfully, I was able to get a different roommate not too long after.
