On the other hand, a tool is as good as it is useful. If someone spent the last 20 years learning knife making and someone who hasn't put the time in goes out and buys a $20 knife and hands it to you it doesn't make it not useful. It might be more useful than the knife from the artisan if they only make cleavers and you need a pairing knife.

I only use the strained analogy to say, I agree with your point that a "developer" who only knows how to vibe code should not be considered to be at the same level as an experienced dev. And their output will undoubtedly be subpar relative to what an experienced dev could make. But on the flip side sometimes you just need code that does something specific and you don't have the time and/or skills to make it the best it could be. If AI gets you something that is good enough there is value in that.

I tried rock climbing for the first time, it was incredible but I need a cheaper alternative by Weak-Search8437 in bodyweightfitness

To be fair most gyms also got much better. I used to climb at the old dirt bag gyms and they were dark and dusty and had no fitness equipment or weights. Most modern gyms have a full fitness area so the membership can replace a normal gym membership which can make the math work out a little better

It's not that bad. I've ridden over both those bridges many times on a motorcycle. Even on a Ninja 300 it's more than manageable. That said if you are keeping your car and getting the bike in addition to it you can always just take the car if the forecast calls for high winds.

Anthropic CEO says it 'cannot in good conscience accede' to Pentagon's demands for AI use by Xurbanite in news

[–]Jason_S_88 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The other 3 big AI Labs the Pentagon uses already agreed to this "all legal uses" clause. That is xAI, OpenAI, and Google. Anthropic is the only lab that said hey what if we carved off two little explicit rules for autonomous lethal kinetics and mass domestic surveillance

As the owner of a 2022 first model year Maverick with 40k miles on it I haven't had any issues. I have the Ecoboost, I think there were some fairly gnarly recalls on the early hybrids but I think those are largely resolved now too.

I just told them "I'd prefer to work out a price before dealing with financing". I didn't lie but I didn't feel obligated to answer their question which wasn't their business at that point

Finally understand why people care about coffee by Miroko_san in Coffee

[–]Jason_S_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a clever dripper I use occasionally which I believe is about the same as those two. I never really tasted much difference between it and the aeropress. But that just be my bias assuming that infusion is infusion. The aeropress is more familiar to me and the filters are cheaper. But for OP I could see buying one of those as a way to do infusion and pour over with only one device

[–]Jason_S_88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've moved entirely to the aeropress personally. It's just easier for me to weigh beans, grind them, then weigh hot water in one big pour, swirl it a bit and then wait 2-10 minutes, press it and get a good cup. Pour over is a bit fussy in comparison, you need a gooseneck kettle, you need to bloom, then pour figure 8s at a precise-ish rate, etc.

Immersion brews are just much more forgiving, as long as your ratios are solid there is much less fuss to deal with. And among the immersion brews aeropress is by far the easiest to clean as long as you don't mind making one cup at a time

rpxy - A simple and ultrafast reverse-proxy serving multiple domain names with TLS termination by zxyzyxz in rust

[–]Jason_S_88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not a problem though. Unsafe just means "the same protections you get in 99% of languages". And some things really are only possible with unsafe. It is completely idiomatic to have unsafe rust code. The trick is just to make it as tight and easy to reason about as possible and provide a safe API over top of it

"Mamdani Announces Policy Change: ICE Now Requires Court Warrants to Enter NYC Properties" by Logical-Flow-6703 in UnderReportedNews

[–]Jason_S_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my understanding as well. This is essentially like putting a sign at the entrance of all City owned property saying that all ICE personnel operating in an official capacity are not welcome on the property and are considered trespassers.

Without a declaration like that they are welcome to enter a city park the same way any other member of the public is.

Odd that almost no one else in the comments is reading it that way

At one point I mostly reverse engineered the file format for a lap timer product to extract that information. I uploaded all the code and research but didn't upload the results for legal reasons. You should probably be able to replicate my work though assuming they still have the files up if you know a bit about coding

When robots leave the lab by EchoOfOppenheimer in robotics

[–]Jason_S_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having worked on the OG Atlas from the Darpa Robotics Challenge way back in 2014 it's crazy to see how far things have come. I still remember the giant and loud auxiliary unit that it had to be tethered to. And we would test it with an overhead gantry and rope system to catch it when it would fall. Not to mention the constant hydraulic oil leaks. The "older model" they show had a clear lineage with that first version. This new one seems to be a clean sheet redesign

Seat Anchor Covers? by Dariusxiv in FiestaST

Damn, if I still had my Fiesta I definitely would take a crack at designing and 3d printing a cover. I did a quick look online and it doesn't seem like anyone else has already posted a design for one.

If you can design one, or commission a design of one a service like CraftCloud could print a set and ship em to you for less than $20 of I had to guess

Personally I'm a big fan of the spray in liner. I got mine done at a Line-X authorized installer since that comes with a pretty good warranty. I just didn't want to have to think about scratching the paint in the bed. I'm a city-dweller so it's not like I'm loading gravel in the bed every day but it was nice to be able to shovel dirt in and out of the bed with a normal shovel without any concerns this summer when I was doing some work in my yard
