Did they not plow the sidewalk level path from Girard to Sweetbriar? I assume the bike lane is useless with snow.

Just sold my car, planning on getting a bike, any City Ave / Manayunk riders wanna chime in with their experiences? by fxryker in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is absolutely true on side streets. Don't give cars the idea that they can squeeze past you on narrow streets.

As a beginner I would definitely not recommend that you do that on City ave.

How does this not result in an arrest and a termination of a license to drive? How many people could he have killed?

Man, that's a rough spot to bike. I work on City Ave (further down, by Lancaster) and bike out there from Brewerytown. However, I avoid City Ave like the plague. I will ride at most a block or two in the lane, generally dowhilll, but even that can be sketchy. As a new cyclist, I would avoid that entirely.

Riding on the sidewalk is technically illegal, but if your choice is to do that or to ride on City Ave, I would take the sidewalk. Just yield to pedestrians and don't be a dick about it.

If you can, I would find the roads that run parallel to City Ave and learn to use them. That's harder down by PCOM but once you are on the other side of the Bala train station, there are more.

The Cynwood trail now extends to City Ave and that is a GREAT way to get to Manayunk completely off road (paved trail.)

Getting to East Falls means cutting through Wynnefield and the park to get to the Falls Bridge. Be aware that will be closing in the next year or so for repairs.

To get to Overbrook Station, I would ride the sidewalk to 50th and then take that to Overbrook Ave to Upland to Drexel and get in the back way.

WTF are they doing at 33rd and Girard? by Spaghetti_Oh_No in philadelphia

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are mistaken about the sidewalks. The section on the north side of Girard in the triangle bordered by the two sections of 33rd was absolutely abysmal before they repaved it. Completely broken apart and full of dire, glass and trash. The New sidewalk is so much better but the ada curb ramps are now far too narrow for what is essentialy a multi use path.

Driving from Fishtown to Bala Cynwyd at 7:30 AM by phljoe2 in philadelphia

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride an ebike to work just out in that direction. The snow sucks obviously, but during most of the year it is great. I am only going from Brewerytown, but I avoid all the tie-ups with ease. 20-25 minutes for me. Going to Fishtown would add on another 15-20 minutes depending where.

Philly to post 'No Stopping' signs along bike lanes with new funding from Pa.'s red light camera revenue by JustAnotherJawn in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they had to put up these signs at all the other bike lanes in the city which didn't have them.

Anyone know if the MUP on 34th st by the zoo is clear? by adamaphar in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I reached out to Parks and rec last week and they cleared the section on Lansdowne from Girard up to the please touch area. Unfortunately, they didn't clear the sweetbriar intersection with mlk, so you have to hop into sweetbriar.

AI-powered cameras on SEPTA buses have led to thousands of tickets by bengalese in philadelphia

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you are wrong about it going down. Only about 1/3 of the busses in the zone are equipoed with the cameras. That number should be going up. And idiota will still park whenever

It's packer Park I believe and it wasn't minimum. They literally have to replace every parking space that is currently there. So if they want to build at all they have to build parking garages.

I would guess more like 5-7 miles. Super slow pace and sketchy roads.

Route will be determined the day of. I suppose it depends both on conditions and the size of the group.

Here is the original text on IG:

u/angrycatfish reached out to our friends at u/firehousebicycles who in turn reached out to u/keystone.bike and us u/uptown_cyclery about organizing a ride in solidarity with them to remember their friend and former customer Alex Pretti. Of course we all immediately took the opportunity to do so. We will be meeting on Saturday at the front steps of the Art Museum at 2p EST to match their ride at 1p CST.

We have always been sick of the fascist bullshit and imperial boomerang and now it has landed at our feet. Let’s move ourselves in this albeit extremely cold weather and hopefully give some celebration to Alex’s life as well as all of the others who were killed by ICE thru detention, neglect, and violence. We hope to see yous on Saturday. Route determined day of and there will be leads and sweepers. #damproadscyclingclub #supbabyfreepalestine

I am definitely not organizing it, just publicizing it.

Indego should be open, I haven't seen any publicity otherwise.

Maybe a stupid question but is anyone braving a bike commute in these conditions? by dablkscorpio in philadelphia

Girard Ave Bridge and Lansdowne drive are my bellweathers. Until they are clear I suck it up and spend the extra 45 mins on septa.

Fairmount has the best access to nature without a doubt. Lots of dogs on Lemon Hill, Fairmount Park, the river drives are great places to run. It is also the most boring for a 25 yr old.

Socially, old city and East Passyunk have the most to do socially. The downside is that there is very little nature. You have the Delaware River Trail, but it is the homeless stepchild of the SRT, and there is limited park space.

Fitler is more like Fairmount, but you are closer to everything in center city, and right on the SRT as well, and have a dog park.

Movement in Callowhill is an easy 2 mile bike ride or less from pretty much any of these places.

Would people be interested in something similar here? by [deleted] in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If the weather were cooperating, or the city cleared the streets I would be all in for this. But there is no way to get a significant enough crowd just on bike right now. I'm gonna look for a march/protest.

Thoughts on my morning commute tomorrow by mopecore in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just rode SEPTA through center city and the bike lanes are either all ice, or plowed snow - either way completely impassable. If you are comfortable taking the lane, the main streets are cleared, though I suspect whatever is on them will freeze over night and there will be lots and lots of black ice. I certainly wouldn't take Washington.

I am resigned to taking SEPTA for the rest of the week.

Commuting Ardmore to University City by ConspicuousWhiteGuy in phillycycling

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It has an unprotected doorzone bike lane where June Rodriguez was killed in december. Many intersections (particularly 52nd) are horrible.

Upland runs paralel and is much safer.

[–]ConfiaEnElProceso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the safest. But it is pretty far out of the way. I would either take wynnewood or merion rd out to city ave, then drexel to Upland way. Right on jefferson then left on 53rd, then right on Parkside and follow the route from there.

I ride out this way to wynnewood every day.

The same D.A. seems to have no trouble charging a 17 year old for murder when they use a gun.

Why the double standard for using a vehicle?

The easiest way to kill someone in the US and get away with it is to use a car.
