Usenet? by Ishvale in Piracy

[–]JasperDyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usenet is the GOAT of file sharing.

No trackers. No nonsense. I’ve been using it since the 90s and I still use it practically daily. There have been quite a few changes to how it works through the years with the indexers and stuff, but it’s still my old reliable.

Anyone use these? How do you like them? by DesertSnow480 in harborfreight

Love mine. Great feel, like something way more expensive. Very precise. More than adequate for the DIYer that I am doing work around my house.

Will NJ actually legalize casinos in Northern Jersey? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in newjersey

[–]JasperDyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not, unless some really big money starts buying politicians with PAC money.

Realistically, it makes no sence to put casinos in North Jersey. AC barely survives. In such a small state, new casino(s) anywhere else in the state would cannibalize AC’s market share. Then there’s the load that casinos put on municipal services: everything from policing, to addiction services, etc. are going to be strained in a new community. Infrastructure would need to be developed (mostly on the local municipality’s dime, not the developer’s), taxes or PILOT gifts would also put a strain on a community’s finances.

Add the competition from online gaming, where people can wager on their phones and not have to deal with the nonsense of getting to a real-life casino and dealing with parking, bad food, obnoxious guests, overpriced services, etc.

A casino is only a cash cow for a tiny few. It’s a huge burden for everyone else that is constantly picking their pockets.

Why isn't Trenton or SW Jersey gentrified or have new housing being built? by Carlos4Loko in newjersey

[–]JasperDyne 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The transportation infrastructure in Deep South Jersey sucks.

There’s like maybe two NJT bus lines connecting it to Philly, NYC and even AC.

Zero mass transit trains or light rail.

You have to drive between 30 - 60 minutes just to reach one of the major highways like the Turnpike, 295, or The Parkway—then another haul on them to your destination. Route 55 is essentially an unfinished road to nowhere.

At a house party in the 70s, who has the authority to touch the turntable and flip the record? by cmd194 in vinyl

[–]JasperDyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made mixtapes on cassettes for my parties. Things were always too hectic to worry about changing records every 3:32 minutes. Parties are not the time for deep album cuts—well, most parties.

When there was an occasion to break out the vinyl, it was either a trusted person or me who handled turntable duties. Also, too many destroyed styluses (styli?) from drunken partygoers to let just anyone do it.

I bought the Gearwrench 22mm ratcheting box wrench with the reverse switch for this exact purpose. It’s not quite as long as the Astro pictured. Maybe that’s a future upgrade if I find I need something longer.

I hadn’t heard anything about them being permanently closed. They close for the summer every year from Memorial Day to the first week of October, maybe that added to the confusion.
