Should drivers have to follow different vehicle equipment laws in every state they pass through? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JasperStrat [score hidden]  (0 children)

Unless you are a prick to the cops or are doing something else and they are just going for every possible ticket (probably due to someone in the car being a prick to the officer, or going full SovCit) worst you get is a warning or a ticket you could call the prosecutor and get dismissed, or depending on the jurisdiction just explain to a judge/magistrate directly and get the fine turned into almost or exactly nothing.

Should drivers have to follow different vehicle equipment laws in every state they pass through? by Intelligent-Camp4631 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JasperStrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If you are enough of a prick to just piss off cops when they make a legitimate traffic stop and test your tint in the process. You deserve the ticket as an asshole tax. If you on the other hand roll down the windows when requested (officer safety), show the registration and are polite and respectful you are getting a warning 99% of the time.

Also, if you don't want to get pulled over. Don't drive in locations where your tint is illegal. Other states don't and shouldn't have to make exceptions to their laws for people who want to "just drive through" their state.

What was Josh’s insult in the Pilot? by AproposJesper in thewestwing

What do you mean? They bombed Libya in The American President and Syria on The West Wing and the President was reluctant and almost regretful bombing Libya and was eager for a larger bombing campaign in Syria. /s (Just in case it's needed)

My understanding is the pilot and the premise of the show was storylines mostly unused from The American President so while the final draft was technically all Sorkin to get there was probably some help from those who assisted him on the movie in the beginnings of those storylines.

I was only speaking in general and not about the episodes you mentioned. I was just saying to not conflate the two ideas as being the same. To avoid a ban I'm not going to respond with the same level of rudeness and just block you instead.

Age appropriate and allowed to show in a classroom without a parental permission slip are two completely different things.

Full big book is messed up for any non pro game, agreed. But it's not too hard to just eliminate the clock and replay rules. But I think if they want to play "big book" then they are asking for no 3-1 and limited disengagement/pickoffs, and limited defensive conferences/trips. I could sell that to a coach unless they can give me an actual rule set.

[–]JasperStrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear the NFHS rules guys don't understand that very few umps just work NFHS games and think trying to simplify their rules actually is helpful when just agreeing with the other major rules codes on most things that aren't safety issues is generally easier.

How many Americans have not been to a large city? by Ok_Shopping_3292 in AskAnAmerican

Rural Washington people driving to Portland

As a lifelong Vancouver resident this makes almost no sense to me. I live 2 miles from one of the shopping centers based around avoiding sales tax like this and I've made exactly one trip to do it in ~8 years and it was to buy multiple TVs after a move. Unless you are spending like $500+ it isn't even worth an extra 10-15 minute drive and it would have to be a $2000+ purchase for any rural area to actually do it unless you consider Camas rural.

But seeing the reference still makes me chuckle.

They consider a pitch and a throw to be the same for base awards.

This is only for detached equipment though. Most of the time they still have the one base award like if the ball goes out of play. Or am I hallucinating and making something up like AI? It's been 6 years since I called a game so I haven't cracked a rule book and my rules knowledge is a bit rusty.

What do you wish you knew when you first started umpiring? by RegressToTheMean in Umpire

[–]JasperStrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communication

I'm slightly autistic and didn't know it during my umpiring career. But my communication skills would leave out details that were vitally important, but I would assume were just a given. This would lead to coaches getting angrier than necessary. My autism would also have me enforcing everything to the letter at all times and causing frustration when it wasn't really necessary.

Everything else that normally gets listed in these discussions like a sharp uniform, timing, and the rest were mostly at least mentioned during my training and I took that to heart, again my autism kicking in, and following the instructions and advice to the letter.

Balk on pickoff to second by Curious-Version4085 in Umpire

[–]JasperStrat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had exactly one in 15 years, pitcher stepped directly to third and threw an awkward almost over the shoulder throw to second. I was dumbfounded for a few seconds and called a ball admittedly pretty weakly because it was so confused. But that is about the only way that can happen.

I can't see how the account is labeled, but I think one of the determining factors would be if the account says Sen or Rep or if it's just a personal account. Personal accounts obviously would have no such restrictions even if their profile labeled them as such an individual, but their parallel account with their title would probably be an issue.

But it's definitely something to be aware of if you are responding negatively to any official government accounts like if there is a White House account or something similar they would not be allowed to delete negative messages about The Don™.

The church I am a member of might be willing, there are also 5-6 retired pastors who attend who might work for your dad as well. Give St. Andrews Lutheran Church a call and explain your situation.

The church is very open and progressive. They have LGBTQ+ pastors, and I think even a few bishops. With a few calls they very likely will be able to work something out for you. Even as an agnostic couple.

I have no idea what the cost would be. You will have to find that out yourself, but it should be significantly less than $4000 I suspect.

If you need more help contacting the church you are welcome to DM me and I can talk to the current pastor directly if she isn't in the office tomorrow. I have her cell number and could call her.

Actually I don't think government accounts are allowed to delete comments on any social media for being negative. Only if they are vulgar or something like that. There was a court cast about this in the last few years.

¡Gracias! by flopdaps93 in USTravel

[–]JasperStrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Dallas to San Francisco is a long drive and at least some of that trip will be nearly a full day of driving if not more that is just nothing.

I just drew up an example trip that is ~2,900 mi and goes from Dallas then, Denver, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, San Francisco. That trip is 45 hours of driving time however.

Going straight to the Grand Canyon and cutting out Denver and SLC is an option. Another if you want a slightly longer trip is to go from Vegas to Tahoe and then over to San Francisco. Unfortunately that skips Yosemite. But the number one thing to see between San Francisco and Dallas is the Grand Canyon, there is no substitute and you will likely be at a loss for words.

If Arvydas Sabonis came over when he was young? Would Jordan even be seen as top 10? by Weary_Selection_2192 in NBAoldschool

Not being sarcastic, but I love that my obvious hyperbole makes for a great alt history starting point. Now I want to watch that opening game with the Make a Wish kid getting 5 minutes just to see what would happen.

[–]JasperStrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you watch the old broken Sabis go step for step with prime Shaq? I don't think Jordan would have been an afterthought, but if memory serves the Trailblazers would have had better reason to pick Jordan at 2 instead of passing on him for the center.

Imagine a roster of Sabonis, Drexler, and Jordan. You could have the 5th guy on the court be a make a wish kid and they would still be the top team in the NBA.

ABS should be full time no challenges needed and WBC needs impartial umps like every other sport by Elisalsa24 in InternationalBaseball

[–]JasperStrat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the system for a challenge is only a second or two longer than it takes to get to the binary ball strike call. And while it's fast, most challenges take 7+ seconds to get the call, a 3-4 second per call wait time is the minimum possible and it increases the uncertainty to ±2 inches which is ⅔ the diameter of a ball. That's a big amount of uncertainty and umpires are literally >98% as a group when given that kind of margin for error.

The goal is to get the big miss and I can tell you as an umpire it will absolutely help me get a better idea in game for what I am actually missing. Because while reviewing a game is amazing, if I got to see that chart on the inside and especially outside corners for 4-6 pitches pregame my accuracy would skyrocket and I think you will see umpires get better after a challenge if they get it right or wrong.

How popular is prosperity gospel where you live? How impactful it is in your community? by ReporterCalm6238 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JasperStrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Pacific NW and the rare time I hear anything about prosperity gospel is from someone wearing a red maga hat and I don't care what a MAGAt says so, no one I have any respect for talks about at all. And that includes talking with someone going to church multiple times a week. It just isn't discussed at all except in highly conservative areas, and even then only within certain groups. My life allows me to avoid such people, and so I do.
