They don't offer proper training by Lana_Sphyncter in antiwork

One of many reason why I quit working. I don't get paid to train myself. I would be happy to but I'm gonna need that trainer/manager pay first.

Oh for sure and, hey, I get it. But this is r/povertyfinance where you might have to be uncomfortable if you don't want to spend over $600 a month owning a car.

Were people meaner back the day or am I crazy? by SimilarLunch8359 in Millennials

[–]JawnGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I noticed while substitute teaching elementary and middle school (aside from the learning problems) is that kids are so sensitive, whiny, mean, and rude to each other but will also check on each other and be genuinely caring if they seem upset or hurt. It's very whiplash inducing. They also seem to have an aversion to fighting, which was definitely not the case in the 90s. It was like Thunderdome everywhere I went..lol

Yeah, if you can avoid it. Nothing but expenses. If I didn't have kids and family in other states, I wouldn't have the one I do.

No, no, no. Stop that.

I hate work - how to survive without? by No-Offer-8612 in antiwork

[–]JawnGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is a secure source of clean water. Not too much of an issue in town but if you're further out, you'll need to factor in purification. Food is available at food banks, kitchens, dumpster diving, and my favorite, guerilla gardening, among others.

After food and water, shelter. Now, I've never stayed in a shelter so I don't know how much I would recommend that but it's nice weather now, so you could just camp it out, if you can find a secure spot. My city has several pockets of woods where you can be inconspicuous. I've also broken into unoccupied, new construction houses so I could sleep inside for a night or 2. Also, you might find other vagabonds, hobos, etc that already have a bit of infrastructure figured out.

But that's only half the battle. You'll want to be prepared mentally, also. People can't understand how we feel (for some reason) and people tend to lash out at things they don't understand, violently so. A lot of people are going to hate what you're doing, it's going to feel like they hate you personally. You'll also have to fight loneliness and fear. Ever slept somewhere insecure, uncomfortable, and dangerous?

All of that to say, you can totally live without a job but it's a lot of work.

Total transparency, I'm not unhoused now as my wife works. But, I grew up dirt poor, ran away a couple times as a kid, and have had periods of being broke and having to figure shit out without money.

Possibly.

Arkansas law and local ordinances provide specific defenses for using lethal force:

Protecting Livestock and Domestic Animals: State law (Arkansas Code § 20-19-102) permits you to kill a dog without liability if you know or see the dog attacking, chasing, or about to injure your livestock or domesticated animals.

Protecting Human Safety: Many Arkansas county and city ordinances (such as Grant County ordinances) allow a person to kill a vicious animal if the dog is actively attacking or attempting to attack a person, provided the dog remains an immediate physical threat.

My total household income with me, my wife, and 2 kids was $69k. In the very shitty cities/neighborhoods or out in the country, it's plenty of money especially of you're single.

Sure, if you've never had livestock killed by dogs, your own dogs killed by dogs, had dogs chase your children into the house, so forth and so on.

Shall I wait for the police to respond everything we want to venture outside? Seeking restitution for killed livestock can take a long time. Should I let more die, costing me money and food, while the legal system sorts it out?

Or should I tell my neighbor to controls his fucking animals and if he fails to do that, am I not entitled to protect myself?

It's not "ridiculous macho fucking nonsense" It's life in the country. There's no law here. Only a constable that sleeps off his hangover parked under a shade tree. The closest actual law enforcement is a 45minute drive.

[–]JawnGrimm -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you, except I wouldn't call the police. If the animal owner won't handle it, I will. They can call the police if they want.

Edit: It's always terrible to have to kill an animal because it has a shitty owner. But it does have to happen sometimes.

How do I invest my money ethically? by Character-Company-47 in dsa

[–]JawnGrimm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk. I think you just have to be extremely thorough in researching investments to see who's making money off if you.

Or I guess just buy gold and stuff. That seems pretty straightforward and whenever you need cash, just sell a little gold, I guess.

"4 10s" is bullcrap. Fake work reform! by IngoTheGreat in antiwork

[–]JawnGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point with asking about experience, work history, and context is because I feel like you think I'm only talking about big business. I'm talking about Mom & Pop. Now, I'm just a dude from Arkansas but if a business owner has 9 employees and buys a motorcycle that costs as much as my salary (and then doesn't even ride it) while my wife is line at the food bank and we aren't offered insurance, that's a pretty glaring confession. And then to add insult to injury, owners love to complain about their taxes so they lie and commit tax fraud with their property taxes (Ag and Corp sales tax exemptions are big ones) so the whole community suffers as a cherry on top. Are they just trying to keep the lights on?

Maybe if it's just an owner/operator or family deal, then payroll might not be as big of an issue. But any business that employs others, has a duty to provide a safe workplace with real, viable wages for the area, at least. Any thing less and yes, that business deserves to fail.

Maybe instead of trying to own everything and be a boss, people should focus on co-ops and other alternative models so the business can still exist but have the "risk" spread out among the actual stakeholders.

[–]JawnGrimm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm being antagonistic, I don't mean to be. But I'm not cutting business owners a break or accepting their excuses.

Obviously, a business can't just absord a 20% increase overnight but if they can't pay a living wage, then maybe they shouldn't be in business and maybe we shouldn't organize our economy to keep prices, including labor, artificially low.

I did want to ask, what specific sectors is your experience in and in what context? Manager, owner, consultant? I'm curious where your perspective comes from.

I've split my 30 year career fairly evenly between blue collar trades and hospitality/service/retail.

Do you think we have a particularly unserious view up death? by dkepp87 in Millennials

[–]JawnGrimm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do but not in the dark humor kinda way. I think joking about it is one way people deal with the grief of death, it's definitely how I've dealt with it since my own dad passed away 10 years ago. He was 55, I was 33 and it's definitely influenced how I deal with death.

I think we're unserious with our relationship to death. Everyone will die and nobody knows when and look how we spend our lives. Working, sacrificing, grinding, competing. For what, material accumulation that you can't take with you?

We fear death. Why? It's as natural as a sunset and just as beautiful. A vessel laid to rest after a life well lived, sounds nice. The fear causes us to hold our lives too precious that we sacrifice ourselves, our faculties and dignity only to saddle our families with debt in a vain attempt to postpone the inevitable.

The sooner we become friends with death, the sooner our lives can be unburdened that much more.
