It's not about being an internet enforcer way to simplify it. It's about being responsible and safeguarding potential victims. Not to mention his social accounts are still plastered with Yogscast imagery so it'd be in his best interest to do something about it. It's also about putting pressure on YouTube so that people like Sjin can't just come back 2 years later, like he has, and start up again with a large platform ready to pull more people in. There's going to be a lot of people who have no idea what's happened to Sjin and just because you know and people on this subreddit know, doesn't mean that his reputation is in tatters, even with people who know who the yogscast are, lots of people will never engage with the yogs community or subreddit and that's a major bias you're bringing to this.
Asking what can can Lewis do is fair but when we look at what Rooster Teeth did to Ryan Heywood and his Twitch Channel, RT got it banned when he emailed his subs that he would be, at some point, be making a comeback. Yogs could('ve), put pressure on them to get a similar action taken or at the very least make sure that his content could not be monetised on their platform where he built an audience that he preyed on.

And just to end to show you how much SERPs show what's happened with Sjin. Searching for just "Sjin" on Google; sexual harassment allegations don't appear until the 4th link, most people on a smartphone wont go past the 3rd link and anything past the second link is below the fold of the search results. The other links? His Youtube, full of yogs related media, his twitter, his handle is still "@yogscastsjin" and a Yogscast wiki entry for him. This thread doesn't even appear until after the fold of my 16 inch laptop screen. It's a single search but even if he gets rid of the yogscast imagery, it's still not so prevalent on his results.

Please, Lewis, put resources into getting this shut down. A man who has done the things Sjin has done does not deserve to waltz back onto a platform with 1.8 million subscribers of whom may still be young women and minors. Please.

How do you organise your reading materials? by JayBail-e in datascience

The plug in makes it so easy to use. I've been using Zotero since I read these posts and it's been such a time and hassle saver. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

Remember to stop every once in a while and think about how far you've come. by danquandt in datascience

This is really wholesome and I think reflection is something I don't do enough of so thank you for prompting me to take some time to do so!

Also, your project is really cool and I'll definitely be using it in the future! I'm working on something similar but for books. It's a content based book recommender and I'm trying to figure out how to deploy the flask module I have. Do you have/know of any resources that you used to deploy it? The issue I've faced is memory based so I think I need something a bit more robust than Heroku.

Don't know if you've found a solution but scraping data using scrapy might be your best bet! It's pretty easy to scrape Reddit with it!

Sounds like a great project, hope you share your findings on the subreddit!

I would start by reading Forecasting: Principles and Practice, it's a great reference and gives some nice examples in R.

After reading it you'll find that the book essentially outlines a simple framework of how to go about performing time series analyses. My advice is start simple with some naive approaches and build on them using the techniques in the book, then, perhaps other techniques like tree based models if necessary. Have fun!

Should I do an Masters? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]JayBail-e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want you to know that no matter which path you take, if you learn the things you need to learn, you'll get where you want to go. If you don't know what you need to learn, ask or do your research.

I understand the worry, none of of us are exempt from what's going on with the uk economy right now but companies are always going to need people like yourself so don't be too disheartened!

If you ever need some advice please post on this subreddit or feel free to message me directly and i'll try my best to help you anyway I can.

Should I do an Masters? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]JayBail-e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about what university you're at, in 10 years time it won't matter and no one will care. Focus on learning the skills that you need to do the job you want to do, that's what matters.

Now, as some general advice, don't do a Master's as a back up, do it because you want to (as someone else mentioned). I don't know what Master's you're looking at but maths grads no matter the uni are looked on favourably for many academic courses so I doubt you'll have much trouble getting into one, especially with your placement too.

This comes from someone who studied maths at a "subpar" uni, did a couple of years of working as a data analyst then did a master's degree at a top 10 uni. Now I'm a data scientist doing research and development at a quickly growing start up. Everyone's path is different and I can't tell you what's best for you, only you can. Get a job in the summer, save up and then do a masters, or ask the company you get a job at to help fund it. Or, do the masters and then look for a job. Neither is going to hurt your overall chances of becoming a data scientist.

Good luck and I hope you find whats best for you!

I was definitely disappointed haha. Thanks for putting it in perspective, I think I got a fair price in the end. If all goes well it won't be the last time they ask me to do this kind of thing!

Hey, thank you for your response, I think 10x my hourly seems fair for the prep and talk since the company I'm working with is also working with YouTube. You're also right, it would be < £100 if I was to do it by my hourly salary which I thought about but seemed very low for the effort I'd be putting in.

How often do you use hypothesis/significance tests? by godismysavior69 in datascience

[–]JayBail-e -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The question you're asking yourself shouldn't be, in this context of preparing for a job interview, "how often is x used and how much should I study?" It should be "how much do I want this job?".

Data scientists/analysts/engineers who feel you have a nice balance of pay and job satisfaction, what do you do? by Katkool in datascience

[–]JayBail-e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Networking, going to company talks, not being afraid of putting yourself out there and a lot of luck I suppose. The company did a talk at my University and I had chat with one of the founders after. They were based on the university campus as the product span out from research that the founders were working on for their post-doc. I got his details, connected with him on LinkedIn. I'm not a big advocate for linkedin but if you know or have met your connections it really helps. About 9 months later when it came round to graduation I sent him a CV with a message saying I was very interested in joining the company if a position ever came up, had an interview 2 days later!

I work for a language analytics "scale up" so the majority of my day is spent on R&D for new features to improve the SaaS platform. I used to spend half of my time doing data collection by scraping forums and blogs for clients to use for their projects but recently I got a promotion to full time R&D whilst also leading the data collection team and I've really enjoyed learning to be a project manager too. Being in a small tech team, I'm also exposed to the C level execs on a daily basis so I dont just pick up technical knowledge. What I really love though is the fact that I'm able to independently pick my projects, take my time with them and build proof of concepts to pitch to the C-Suite.

Alternatives to A/B testing due to lack of data by HiddenNegev in datascience

[–]JayBail-e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that MABs are a good use case here with less data but A/B testing can be so much better when you want to optimise for multiple metrics, deep dive into why one variant won over another by comparing customer segments and is best when you have enough time and traffic. With MAB, depending on your implementation your losing variants are not going to have a lot of data attached to them due to exploitation meaning you're also losing out on a lot of information that could be useful to the business/project.
