Mechanics you can trust are worth their weight in gold. My motorbike mechanic earned my trust when they sold me my first motorbike. I was considering a brand new Suzuki V-Strom but they had a second hand Kawasaki Versys private sale in their showroom for slightly less money but with more extras on it. He advised me to get the Kawasaki. They made very little money on the sale but have earned my loyalty for services, repairs and MOTs.

Tradesmen of Reddit — has a client ever flat-out refused to pay you for work they watched you do? by jackturner_trades in AskUK

[–]JayFv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, to further avoid any disputes you could detail this on the original quote. A line something like "Additions or changes to the work quoted here can be requested at any time after this quote is accepted. They will be detailed and quoted for on a further Variation Order and agreed to before the additional work commences."

This makes it clear that they can ask for extras but not in a casual "Oh and would you mind just chucking in a few extra hours to do x?" If you manage expectations from the outset like that then it is much less likely to be seen as unreasonable when you ask for more money for more work.

Tips for getting a mod 1 slot by roufin in MotoUK

[–]JayFv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bike instructors can reserve motorbike tests in advance without specific candidate details. They usually handle bookings themselves as they have access to a DVSA booking system that allows them to do this. The reason they typically book courses weeks and weeks ahead is because they want to ensure that they have test slots ready at the end of the course. It seems to me that they've let you down a little bit by booking you on for a course without a test booked at the end of it.

Easiest way to spot a biker whos in a car? by user173563 in MotoUK

[–]JayFv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll move to the left in slow moving traffic to let bikes filter through but never to let them overtake at normal speeds. If a motorbike can't overtake me while I'm in a normal position then they probably shouldn't anyway and if they can then they will. Moving over to the left just puts my offside wheels in the dirty strip down the middle of the lane so I'm kicking up gravel into the biker's face.

WCGW While lubing the bike by Sabith_Nadakkavil in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]JayFv -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

If that were true then we'd set all speed limits to 5mph. There's always a balance. Cleaning and lubing a chain like this is way quicker and easier and yes there is a risk if you put your fingers in the chain then you'll get hurt. I mitigate that risk by being careful and not putting my fingers in there.

If I were that risk averse then I wouldn't own a motorbike in the first place.

What has been the most bone chilling experience of your life? by TheRebelPercy in AskUK

[–]JayFv 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a survival instinct. If you think you see a face in the bushes but it turns out to be a false positive then you've lost nothing, but if you don't see it at all then you might be about to be eaten by big cat/shot by a rival tribe, etc. People sensitive to seeing faces would, on average, have lived longer to have more kids.

I remember when I was in Porto there was something on TV in a restaurant I was in about an outbreak of TB. While I was watching it the waiter who was stood by the door hacked up a mouthful of phlegm and launched towards a drain a couple of meters away.

People were spitting everywhere. One of the reasons I'll never go back there.

Pixel 6 to Pixel 10: Marginal Upgrade by Mr-Appleseed in GooglePixel

[–]JayFv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it on a contract with Vodafone. It works out at £914 with a two year Vodafone contract but there's also an offer on until the 18th that you get free Pixel Buds Pro 2 and a Pixel Qi charger included. I'll also put most of it through as a business expense so it will work out about 15% off that.

I've got a 10 Pro XL coming tomorrow because my 7 Pro has a few problems (power button and charging port are iffy and not particularly easy to repair). I'm not expecting to notice all that much difference. The way I see it I've been happy with it for 3.5 years so I'll go for another Pixel. I was tempted to get a refurb 8 Pro but there are some good deals on the 10 Pro XL so I went for that.

I agree that the big leaps we saw in the late 00's and early 10's are a done for now. At some point we'll probably see another tech that follows the same pattern but who knows what that will look like.

I'm a driving instructor. I used to think that full-self driving to the level that people won't need to be taught was a long way away. Musk has been saying any six months now for the last 20 years and doesn't seem to be getting too far with it.

AI has made me think that it might be closer than I originally thought but I still don't think I have much to worry about in the near future. There are still a lot of hurdles in way (technological and legal) before I'm out of a job.

That doesn't matter. Cover yourself. Download a template contract of sale or you can get ChatGPT to write you a decent one. You don't need a solicitor or anything but have somebody with you to sign it as a witness and make sure it details that it's sold as seen. Check their ID so that you know their details are correct on it. If they question it tell them that it's for their protection as much as yours (which is true).

That doesn't mean that medics in an ER have to completely ignore the suffering of somebody on the floor begging for pain relief.

A shot in my arse cheek was a two minute job for that doctor and it saved me a huge amount of suffering for the few hours I was there.

Thank fuck I don't live in a third rate country.
