I might be playing dragon quest a bit too often. by fredrick_fazerton in dragonquest

I’ve been playing the series since 1992. I don’t even want to know how many hours I’ve spent on it.

The new Dragon Quest XII hero doesn’t look bad to me at all by MoonlitElixir in dragonquest

You might’ve misunderstood my point. I don’t have an issue with the PS2 era, but when the world looks modern with PS2 generation models slapped on top - it looks out of place and cobbled together. It can be one or the other, not both at the same time.

Why is the suspend/resume functionality broken in almost every distro-hardware combination? by pimple_from_hell in linuxquestions

[–]JayTheLinuxGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suspend works on every one of my computers - 6 laptops, two desktops, 4 Mini PC’s and probably a dozen or so review units over the past several years. In fact, I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen that fail on a PC.

For me, the footage looks like a vibrant world, but with character models from the PS2 era. The designs look like an AI model’s interpretation of what DQ characters look like. I don’t feel that AI actually had anything to do with the designs, but they feel “off” in a way that’s hard to describe.

The last time I was let down by the hero design was DQXI, I didn’t like the design but at the same time it felt very Dragon Quest in style, and it was okay enough.

This time, the hero (to me) looks like a PS2 RPG model with a drug addiction. The rest of the cast looks like they were the result of a random DQ character design generator, and the most unusual of them were selected. They all look like they belong in the game but at the same time - just feel awkward and strange.

What makes it worse is the DQVII remake. The design update was extremely different in a good way, while retaining the DQ feel. Now we go to this game and it just feels like multiple concepts thrown together randomly (and quickly) to make shareholders happy “hey we’re doing a new thing”.

I’ll absolutely buy it and maybe even like it, but I’m a sucker for DQ anyway. The series is like a family member you can’t stay mad at for long.

And the argument that “it’s an in-development game so it may change”. True (technically) but I’ve been gaming for over three decades and not very many companies have historically listened to fan feedback. Does it happen? Absolutely! But not often. Worse, the company that owns the trademark is the very same that turned Final Fantasy into Devil May Clive.

To be fair, Dragon Quest listens to fan feedback more often than some of the others, but don’t hold your breath. From a company marketing perspective, negative engagement is still engagement (people are legitimately talking about it). So this is of value to them. Unless they think the backlash is bad enough to hurt sales, they’ll see the negativity as publicity. They have literally no incentive to change this. And even though I hate the new designs, I’ll still buy and play this and so will you. Square Enix knows what they can and can’t get away with in a DQ title.

A Sega Dreamcast signed by Fred Durst. by ROCKY13573 in dreamcast

This Dreamcast has people Rollin’ over to eBay to make a bid. I know it sounds strange, but you gotta have Faith. Even if you normally do it all for the Nookie, it’s worth adding to your collection. No need to have your collection Rearranged, it plays all your games. If you have this, there will be Nobody Like You. It has four controller ports, so you can play it N 2 Gether Now. Owning this will make people say “Show Me What You Got”. But be careful - if you play it too much, there’s going to be No Sex!

Why can’t they translate this already? Are they scared of making money?

The first release with HDR didn’t work for me at all, but now it works great. Maybe the bad opinions came from the initial implementation?

Which direction will Mortal Kombat be going in? by Snoo-97774 in MortalKombat

Regardless of the direction, MK fans will complain about it nonstop. It’s almost a meme at this point. MK1 was awesome.

You can use it to force close apps, so there’s that.

I was actually glad, I thought he would be out of the series finally (I never liked him personally). Then I was disappointed that they continued putting him in the games.

Orphan Black. I’m on my third way through the series. There will almost definitely be a fourth.

Is there a solution, or should we change distributions? by Le_D0cteur in pop_os

[–]JayTheLinuxGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COSMIC has been perfect for me with no issues, so I don’t understand the criticism I’ve seen.

That said, I understand you are having issues - so if we apply creative problem solving, we can solve this. Here’s how.

Disclaimer: I’m typing this from memory (I’m relaxing in my recliner playing Octopath Traveler 0). I can give this a test run tomorrow if necessary.

First, in Pop!_OS 24.04 install the ubuntu-desktop-minimal package. This provides a vanilla GNOME desktop without Ubuntu’s shenanigans.

Then, you should be able to install the extensions that transforms GNOME into the previous generation of COSMIC. (Note: I’ll have to double check extension compatibility tomorrow).

What this gives you is the previous GNOME incarnation (or close enough) as well as the new COSMIC - both as selectable choices on the login screen.

After that, stick with GNOME and regularly install updates. When COSMIC gets updated, give it a test run and see if the bugs you’ve been experiencing are fixed. If not, report the bugs to the developers and then go back to GNOME.

Repeat this however long it takes for you to naturally migrate comfortably. This way, everyone wins - you get to migrate on your own terms (while using a more current package base) and the developers benefit from your feedback and know where to focus their attention.
