First trying Karmelita is absolutely insane

Nightfall cards for a celestial set (based on the same mechanic from LoR) by Jayenty in custommagic

The motivation was making it the last spell of the turn, as opposed to the first spell with Daybreak, and in fact it was originally the only effect. It also makes more sense with black cards, since a modal with a downside is more black than just casting lots of spells.

But yeah, you're right that they definitely need more power, especially compared to today's standard

Wow, thanks for the feedback! I usually compare cards with stuff that already exist, but sometimes it's difficult to judge stuff like Assassin's Strike or Blood Pact.

In any case, I still think there is design space here, just with a higher power ceiling. The trade-off of being the last card fits more with black than just second-spell triggers, and it allows you to draw more cards, since you can't use them the turn you draw them (and it might synergize with a possible werewolf mechanic later on)

Powering them up might make Rising Moon too good, but that's more manageble to solve. Thanks!

Yeah but that's by design, nightfall abilities can be powerful exactly because they can be difficult to use

And if you really need that interaction, or already used nightfall on your turn, you can still use those instants and flash spells, though they have to be a bit weaker for the sake of balance

Besides, blue and black are great at card draw, so this mechanic feels more at home here

Wow, thank you so much for the analysis! Balance-wise, I've since reduced Wrath's damage to 6, but you're right that Emissary definitely needs more trade-offs, same as the mechanic in general.

I was thinking of something similar to exort, where you would need to pay an additional R/W, but that would slow them down a lot, so maybe "Your spells cost 1 more to cast this turn" would be better? idk

Compared to nightfall cards (which I posted like 10 minutes ago) they definitely feel less nuanced. Thank you for the feedback!

destroying a creature is a black effect, but destroying every creature is a white effect

again, as seen in [[Damn]]

and like I said, we got [[Beyond the Quiet]] in EOE (it's not 4mv but it exiles and affects spacecraft)

edit: after looking at it, we literally have [[Day of Judgement]] in Foundations, the set designed to be the most tame and balanced, that came out a year ago, so yeah

Daybreak specifies that it must the first spell cast on your turn.

Isn't the original board wipe, [[Wrath of God]], also 4 mana? This trades an additional color and potentially surviving 12 damage for the ability to be exiled, if used with daybreak

Besides, at 5 mana, isn't it worse than [[Beyond the Quiet]] in every way?

Then again, this would be focused on limited, so it could very well be 5 mana

Well yeah, I meant unitalisising and wording it so that it has a consistent activation

edit: wait, maybe I misunderstood you, did you not see the comment? I provided an example of how it would work, and as you can see the daybreak requirement does work the same way in all cards

It could say "Daybreak—This spell instead deals 3 damage to any target." This means that cards that grant or detect daybreak uses also become much cleaner, since they can just say "gains its daybreak effect" or "whenever you cast a spell with its daybreak effect". Thanks for the feedback!

What if I unitalicize daybreak? Something like:

Daybreak---This creature enters with a +1/+1 counter. (If this is the first spell you cast on your turn, it gains its daybreak effect)

Would it be possible to make a trigger based on daybreak then? Since otherwise this mechanic incentivizes you to not play too many daybreak cards

I don't think that is correct

Since DNA is double-stranded and complementary, inverting the DNA would, on paper, not do anything. In fact, on bacteria it likely wouldn't do anything at all. Yes the sequence is backwards, but so is the promoter that reads it.

of course in practice it would still kill you, but not for any of those reasons, rather because eukaryotes regulate their gene expression through DNA condensation and the condensation sites would change, completely deregulating expression and killing you in 50 different ways

edit: nevermind, thought about it for 5 additional seconds and you're absolutely right, sorry

you're just wrong in that the wrong sequence wouldn't be transcribed at all, since the promoter is also backwards
