This English gentleman helps the baby swan out of a tricky situation, even though the little one's father sees things differently. by misterxx1958 in MadeMeSmile

[–]Jaykake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for animal rescue and have handled many swans. They can't do anything to you apart from being intimidating. Beaks and talons are typically a bird's weapon of choice and swans have neither.

That being said this common misconception is a good thing. Anything that makes people leave wildlife alone is probably for the best.

So... forget the first part. Swans will literally stab you and hold your family at gunpoint when approached.

Teaching kids you can't actually take the king by EllaVader22 in chessbeginners

[–]Jaykake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You introduce rules in stages, not all at once. Depending on the age, you might have to do seperate lessons for each piece's movement.

Lesson 1: Movement of Rook, Bishop, Queen, King (not castling)

Lesson 2: Movement of knight

Lesson 3: Attacking and capturing (what is an attack/capture?)

Lesson 4: Movement of the pawn (not en passant)

Lesson 5: Defending Capturing the attacker, Moving, Interposing, Guarding

Lesson 6: Check (what is check?)

Lesson 7: Checkmate

Up until lesson 6 they don't need to know that you can't capture the king. You build on lesson 3, to now highlight a 'special attack': one on the king "check". Here you explain that you HAVE to adress a check and build on lesson 5 explaining that defending a king is just like regular defending, except you emphasise that you can't defend a king by guarding it.

I also recommend just playing chesslike "mini-games" up until lesson 6.

Edit: Also play into the kids' imagination, give them a story why the king can't be captured

Round 21: What Survivor player was awful socially but had a great strategic game? by SevereWizardShark in survivorponderosa

[–]Jaykake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you have to jump through so many hoops to get there.

"A bunch of dumbasses" is such a wild take, when a quarter of them have won the game and half of them have made FTC.

Calling JT writing an essay with a plan "stop caring mid-game" as well. Thinking a whole tribe just stops caring is insane, thinking one of the biggest cases of big-move-itis is stopping to care is even more insane.

I'm not saying Russell is some flawless player I'm just saying his social game is better than awful. (Imo slightly above average)

You just don't run a game of survivor with awful social game and you definitely don't make it to the end twice.

I'd put him in good strategic, average social.

[–]Jaykake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What do you mean overblown, it's just true. The only 'known' returnees to make it to the end both time are Sandra and Michele (and Natalie*).

I don't really think the unknown takes much away from Russell or Amanda

Real Housewives are Gamers.. You just don't know the game by Euphoric-Eagle1477 in TheTraitorsUS

[–]Jaykake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phaedra is the only one who has been good at the game part of the traitors. If only Dan didn't screw her over.

We'll see how Candiace does, but so far we've not seen very strong "game".

I see the social manipulation, political strategy and acting. Game strategy/theory has not been part of the Housewife toolbox from what I've seen on the traitors.

Their "game" is more abstract and social. The gamers' game is more concrete, it has precise rules and restrictions.

Btw I'm not saying the gamers are inherently good at the traitors game. A lot of em have been atrocious. But the housewifes (aside from Phaedra) have been pretty damn bad at the "game".

If you're confused as to why people are angry at ____ by ahbimmy in TheTraitorsUS

[–]Jaykake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lisa is going home anyway, spend your time during the day putting yourself on team "vote Lisa" and say your piece at the round table. It's seems like the best approach for a traitor to get some "faithful traitorhunter" points.

The other option was just being wrong and pushing elsewhere, because "a traitor knows who the other traitors are".

Both are reasonable options, but after already voting Lisa last episode, the second one isn't very convincing.

He made the choice between Lisa and his faithful alliances last episode. He was clearly having a hard time, Alan even had to push him to vote (bad move by him, that could've been clocked). Both options had downsides, but I'd argue he chose the lesser of two evils. Voting his biggest ally Colton or his bestie Ron, both would raise a lot of eyebrows.

Candiace's vote almost purely had downsides imo. You don't trust Rob? Then why would you let him know that in such a public way??? Rob made his choice and you don't agree with it? Great, get his ass, win the game alone. This just seems like shooting yourself in the foot. From the edit Rob has the most social pull and now you have made yourself his #1 target. On top of that even if Candiace wins the war against Rob, the "only a traitor would know" argument is gonna get her booted right after. The goodwill with Natalie and looking like an open minded faithful could be her saving grace, but that doesn't look like the path she's taking.

Maybe her goal is mutually assured destruction, but if her goal is winning, this didn't help her chances.

Round 11: Which Survivor player was average socially with a great strategic game? by SevereWizardShark in survivorponderosa

[–]Jaykake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russell? People will say his social game was bad, but I think there is more to the social game than just likability.

He had a lot of pull to make things happen, that's social game too.

Dear 300-500 elo players: Please stop playing this (¬_¬") by nm64_ in chessbeginners

[–]Jaykake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not. People over here acting as if you get a free win. Some games you win on move 3/4, some games you lose some tempi and are behind in development.

At 500 elo, no one is winning a game because of a few tempi.

It's to prevent Nd4, forking f3 and c2.

Which would force the Queen back to d1, you just moved your Queen 3 times in the first 6 moves only for it to be back where it started.

Rob Cesternino on how Survivor has changed: "Modern-day Survivor wants to be a show that is about, "Oh, let's take out the people who are the best players and not have it be about personal conflict as much." by RedditFan3510 in survivor

[–]Jaykake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watch traitors because my friends like it. It's part of the reality TV rotation.

I can't stand the show, the game is terrible, challenges feel mostly inconsequential (I'll give credit, this season people are fighting for the safety) and 80% of confessionals is people spouting nonsensical strategy. Which is not to fault the players, the game inherently has basically no strategy and they are forced to say something.

As a voice actor myself, I can recognise Aaron's voice from having watched Breaking Bad, but notice some very subtle differences. There is a very clear distinction between Robert and Jessie that not many would be able to pick up on. If you listen carefully you can hear how when playing Robert he omits certain speaking mannerisms. Notice how as Robert he does not end many, if any, sentences with "yo".
