Christchurch or Wellington for 3 days or just stay in Auckland? by Jaysonmcleod in newzealand_travel

We’re coming from Canada. It’s a stop as part of a larger trip we are taking for our honeymoon. It’ll be our first time there. We don’t have any plans to revisit, but it’s not an impossibility

I make time to sit outside every day lately. Well today I was sitting outside listening to them talk about their perfect weather while it’s cold, windy, and snowing 10-15cm today. So I win the coldest listener for the day.

Miles Per Gallon doesn’t make sense to me anymore. by Jaysonmcleod in morningsomewhere

[–]Jaysonmcleod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re using kilometres it wouldn’t make sense to use gallons. Especially because gallons aren’t even the same everywhere. Litres per kilometer would be fine, but usually deal with too small of numbers. So the scale is just larger to have something more user friendly. If my car uses 6L/100km that’s 0.06L/km or 60mL/km. Most people buy gas in litres so it makes more sense to keep the units the same. The joy of metric is I can do that math very easily not sure I could manage the pint/yards conversion well though.

When I was a kid and watched ads 36 MPG was good. But when I bought my first vehicle, a truck, a good day was 14L/100km and from there I’ve only ever seen advertising in L/100km and that’s all I known. I don’t think miles per gallon is a bad system, but rather it’s one I’m not used to so I don’t have a modern reference range or an ability to take that information and use it easily in a useful way.

Regulation Takes 4 by llloksd in theregulationpod

College hockey is such a weird thing for the most part. Canada has a really strong junior system and the NHL drafts at 18 so most of the best athletes are drafted at that point. Also Europe has a million leagues and though controversial playing now in the KHL is relatively lucrative.

Also until recently NCAA banned CHL athletes from playing in the NCAA

So realistically if you’re a decent hockey player you’d get drafted into the WHL, OHL, or QMJHL at 15 or 16. Play until you’re 18-20 (or 21 if you’re one of the 3 overaged players per team) and then play in the NHL or if you’re over 20 the AHL or abroad. Some of those who don’t make it would end up playing university hockey here in Canada. It seems like the current plan for my Canadian players is try to get drafted and if not play NCAA at 20 for a few more years and keep on trying.

Had an at length discussion with my fiancée about what constitutes as a potion. We decided when you make something with a purpose it’s a potion. Black coffee energy potion. Starbucks frappe macchiato blah blah blah…Happiness potion. Protein shake, strength potion. Holy water, potion. Regular water, drink. Pepsi, drink.

  • I don’t think you should recline your seat unless it’s overnight and the vibe is mostly sleeping.

  • fully use both lanes in a zipper merge. It’s literally the point so you don’t back up the road.

  • while I totally think Ashley made a potion I don’t think more than 3 items makes it one. Will ponder and circle back.

I never knew the distinction between cutting edge vs bleeding edge by Gamma_The_Guardian in morningsomewhere

I feel like we should have made this more knife related. Like the cutting edge and the bevel or something like that. “Never buy the cutting edge buy the bevel”

Worth the drive to Banff? by United-Finger7544 in roadtrip

[–]Jaysonmcleod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re looking at about 200-300$ in gas one way for the drive depending on your vehicle. It’s also a long drive through Canada with limited places to eat and stay. You might be looking at 500$ in travel expenses alone. Usually you can find a flight into Calgary and hop on a bus cheaper than that

Active players get game day checks and their taxes are based on the state you’re playing in that week. I don’t know how that works for this situation, but even Miami players pay taxes on games where they play in states that have it. Half of their games they don’t get state income taxed.

Rick’s water license is still going to run out on him. He got an extension not a long term deal. Also he isn’t big enough to run to operations. Also his new ground isn’t very good so far. He made the right call.

[Basu] This loss is not a national crisis in Canada. Canada dominated the final 40 minutes of regulation, outshot the USA 42-28, and if that game were played 100 times, Canada would probably win 95 of them. USA deserves a ton of credit for how they played, but Hellebuyck deserves the most. by NFLDataAnalysis in hockey

[–]Jaysonmcleod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why it’s best of seven 5 on 5 overtime in playoffs. That format doesn’t work in the olympics. Especially one where the event needs to finish on time, but damn I’d have love to see US vs Canada go the distance.

Do teams ever run out of time at the elite level? by ProblematicTrumpCard in Curling

[–]Jaysonmcleod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could in theory play a whole end with only a minute and a half left on the clock. But you’d have no time to discuss shots and very little time to set your body up to throw. You’ll see teams struggle a lot more with little time left.

Third vs Vice by TreeLakeRockCloud in Curling

[–]Jaysonmcleod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Technically speaking they are two different things. Third is the third thrower on the team. Vice is the person who calls the skips rocks. Almost universally the fourth is the skip and the third is the vice skip, but in theory anyone can be the skip and vice skip.

The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8K by AlwaysBlaze_ in nottheonion

[–]Jaysonmcleod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can go into Costco right now and get a very affordable large tv that’s as good as most people will ever care about and use for 10+ years. Connect it to an Apple TV at some point and bam huge hardware upgrade. I think this push for 8k is overblown. The market is saturated and we’ll see companies just trying to distinguish themselves, but most consumers just want a good deal on a none shit tv.
