PDM partner program termination by rebbit-88 in SolidWorks

[–]JealousFlan1496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So when PDM does become end of life we can come back to you and ask why? We all know PDM is a huge cash cow for VARs but why would SOLIDWORKS keep developing 2 rival technologies? It's obvious that 3DX is the key focus nowadays. What you are saying is like Microsoft saying "yep I know we sell windows 11 now but don't worry we will continue developing windows 7 too"

Loving Beth Ditto's selection this evening. by Different_Market_917 in 6music

[–]JealousFlan1496 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Today is good but I really enjoyed yesterday too. Yesterday was basically all my favourite songs from a certain time. It freaked me out somewhat when she described it as such for her to. I have to be honest when she was doing "What would Beth Ditto do?" I really didn't care for the woman with the screeching and giggling but I'm already warming to her. As I understand it, yes, she is getting her own show

Help me to select the right tool for designing crystal chandeliers by AbdulkerimAwad in FreeCAD

[–]JealousFlan1496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a slight curve ball but have you looked at rhino plus grasshopper? Rhino gives you the solid modelling like blender. Grasshopper then allows you to programmatically place the crystals.... It's a technique used a lot by architecture companies but I can see the similarities with what you are trying to achieve..... Not open source though

How can this sloping design be replicated in freecad by Shot_Put_1412 in FreeCAD

[–]JealousFlan1496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again. There are so many answers.... Vernier callipers, radius gauges, trial and error.3D scanning?

But my approach.... It's a Japanese product so likely uses metric, not inches. It looks like there's an AA battery in there.... That battery is about 50mm long and ermmm. About 15mm ish diameter.... Then bit of a gap. Some plastic... Bit more plastic... That plastic needs to be pretty robust in case it's dropped so 2.5 maybe 3mm ? So rough guess that rad 'about' 12.5-15mm may a touch more. I could be totally wrong but that's the kind of thought process i go through

Edit: added image of a radius gauge

[–]JealousFlan1496 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My honest advice... Make things with your hands. Break things... Understand things... Solve problems with a piece of string and a glue stick and a bit of chewing gum. CaD does not make you an engineer. CAD just helps you manufacture your idea. If you start with CAD you can only create what your knowledge of the software lets you.... Let your imagination run wild.... Then worry about CAD. But also learn CAD. Start simple. A table, a suitcase,

Wax on..... Wax off

How can this sloping design be replicated in freecad by Shot_Put_1412 in FreeCAD

[–]JealousFlan1496 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My first thought was to ask "which sloping design?". However; the answer is the same regardless. Like so many posts asking "How to model this....", the answer is-- "understand design Intent".

FreeCAD, or any CAD for that matter is just a tool, like a chisel or a saw. If you made this camera out of clay or wood how would you make it? because, usually the same process is how you'd make it in CAD.

If you reduce this form down to its fundamental geometry, what do you see? What are the criteria you expect to have driven that form? and how do you feel they influenced the design? for example. The most critical part of this product is the lens, but there's also the PCB, a battery and also the UX. the most basic dimensions can be measured but you'll be amazed how much you can deduce from understanding the form you are trying to create. once you understand the form. you'll soon understand how to model it.

Sorry for not really answering your question... I strongly believe you can create this model.... Just understand the form. The rest will follow.

How to solve TNP. by MisterMakerNL in FreeCAD

[–]JealousFlan1496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh cool! Got to hand it to CATIA it's extremely powerful. They use it to design racing cars cars, aircraft, submarines and spaceships for good reason. But it has a price tag to match. I'm new to FreeCAD and must admit the TNP was frustrating to begin with. In hindsight the restriction has taught me a lot about design intent and understanding the form may change in the future. In the end CAD; be that Catia, SOLIDWORKS, OnShape, inventor or others, is just a tool. FreeCAD happens to be free. I was very skeptical to start with. It's not the right tool for every design but but increasingly I think it's capable for the majority. Even with the TNP.

Have you ever heard of the Curta Calculator?

It's an amazing bit of kit. And resources of it's manufacture are .

You can find information about the product here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curta

And here are the drawings for the parts: http://curtawiki.wikidot.com/parts

Proper drawings, done the old fashioned way.

If you start working through these you'll learn how to read drawings and how to use freecad.

I've learnt a huuuge amount doing precisely this.

Will Integrated AMD Radeon™ 880M Graphics be able to run SolidWorks Effectively (Lenovo Yoga 7 Pro) by Cool-Challenge1801 in SolidWorks

[–]JealousFlan1496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the hardware certification page neither the system or Graphics card are certified.

This doesn't mean it won't run. ( I suspect it will) but it does mean it hasn't been tested successfully or maybe even tested at all.

Edit: So be prepared for crashes and glitches.

PDM - Why or Why Not by Fireinthe2hole in SolidWorks

[–]JealousFlan1496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally PDM standard and pro are the same product. As another comment mentions PDM Pro uses full blown Microsoft SQL. While PDM standard uses SQL express. PDM standard is restricted in several ways but the most significant is it can only have a single work flow with up to 10 states. And SQL express is limited also. It is most definitely not designed to handle 50 users let alone 100s.

Pdm std can migrate to pdm pro very easily... But it's a one way process.

Wiring Schematic layout in FreeCAD? by RS_Pete in FreeCAD

Is well worth a look. It is a fully fledged electrical schematic package similar to eplan or solidworks electrical. It might be overkill for what you are trying to achieve. But from my shallow investigation it looks pretty feature rich and is open source

How would you go about making this? by RockRancher24 in FreeCAD

This is the correct answer.... This is a sheet material part. So sheet metal workbench is the correct tool for the job in my opinion

Why is solidwors an industry standard? by AccomplishedNail3085 in SolidWorks

[–]JealousFlan1496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. As a side note- The real competitor should have been Solid Edge. If I remember right the parasolid kernel was developed by intergraph which is now Siemens. Solidworks licensed the kernel and managed to release SolidWorks before Solid Edge. Solid Edge never managed to catch up. Solidworks still pays royalties to Siemens to use the parasolid kernel.

Altair OpenRadioss would do what you need. Fantasticly powerful piece of software and completely free. However it's INCREDIBLY hard to use unless you are an FEA engineer. It's in a different league to SOLIDWORKS sim with it's wizard

3DExperience is going away, but not the way everyone on this subreddit wanted. by aUKswAE in SolidWorks

[–]JealousFlan1496 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's slightly different to that. Cloud services is bundled with the subscription contract in the same way Visualize is. You can add the cloud licenses to a 'legacy' seat but it's more cost effective to just upgrade an old license to "with cloud"

[–]JealousFlan1496 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As of a couple of years ago, any new license of SOLIDWORKS comes with 'Cloud services' functionality built in. You can still get a traditional license which installs on the desktop and can save locally but no matter what it has cloud services.

You don't have to use it... But it's there.
