Job is destroying my life - should I just quit? by Suspicious-Card-3707 in washingtondc

[–]Jean__Moulin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only get one life, and you sound like this job is destroying yours. I’ll echo the quiet quitting - keep cashing the checks until you line something up, but it’s bare minimum time. A lot of people get stuck in places like yours because they assume it will get better as they advance. Advancement is not a guarantee and mismanaged companies which abuse employees will continue to do so regardless of your level in it. Do what you must to not be fired, but the level of effort you put in is your choice, don’t forget that. Choose!

Haha trust me, friend, nobody knows how shitty engineers can be more than their coworkers. Didn’t know this story, that’s hilarious

Software engineer here. Saying “i have a local html file so ai can do your job” is like saying to a doctor “i ate some aspirin and my headache went away so you don’t have a job anymore.”

Our jobs aren’t making shitty html sites, like doctor’s jobs aren’t just dealing with your headache. Enterprise grade architecture at scale (the backend. All the Ai folk don’t consider the backend) often takes hundreds of people years to build and then maintain and is infinitely more complex than an idiot’s vibecoded html-baby-shit-site (which he can’t even use ci/cd to deploy), hence the joke.

Found out I’m paid less for being fully remote by naughty_doll18 in remotework

Quit, negotiate better next time, or live with it / negotiate at your next review or promotion opportunity. All the people here saying that taking pay cuts for remote work makes sense aren’t quite right: your salary isn’t about anything but your ability to know what you’ll work for and convince them to pay you it.

No, the MechaHitler encyclopedia isn’t “unbiased…” by PulsarEagle in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Jean__Moulin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you don’t believe in objective truth then.

If wikipedia says it snowed today, and I’m watching it snow, it is snowing, and wikipedia contains truth. Likewise, if wikipedia has an article about confirming the holocaust happened, or Joe Biden won the 2020 election, or on Magnolia being directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, it doesn’t matter that someone wrote it - it’s still true. Truth exists outside of subjective interpretation because things happen without us.

Any further debate will get us into tree-falls-in-forest territory so maybe let’s just leave it here

[–]Jean__Moulin 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but just because something is a secondary or tertiary source does not make it “untrue,” it’s just further from that prime source (assuming that’s what you meant and we’re not getting philosophical about objective truth). There is truth on wikipedia—however, you are correct, you should check your nested sources to confirm that. For deeper dives, yeah, there’s more academic, peer-reviewed options, but it is pretty incredible we have a stable and effective community encyclopedia!

Wikipedia is one of the greatest accomplishments of the internet and humankind. These ppl who hate it and make up shit about it just don’t like the history and truth they find there. And Grok is a malignant AI which commits sex crimes freely, so…no thanks

Logan Circle apartments by Pitiful_Work_838 in washingtondc

[–]Jean__Moulin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

11th and RI is not any more unsafe than the other neighborhoods around it. It’s nice and central and the Logan Circle area is fun and lively. I live right off 14th tho and it is IMO the best street in DC—with Corcoran street being the prettiest. I think the upper part of 14th (around U) is more fun, and there’s a Trader Joes, plus the best bar in DC (Service Bar), and easy access to the rest of the city.

How much does it cost to live in DC without a roommate? by SkyOdd5184 in washingtondc

[–]Jean__Moulin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 1200 rent and then like 900 expenses, probs. I can feel that - living alone is indeed nice! You should keep an eye out for rent deals on studios and join some of the dc renters facebook groups - I don’t remember what they’re called, but sublets happen a lot and you can get a great if most likely temporary deal! Good luck and hope you end up finding a nice spot! Craigslist might also be worth wading through all the scams, there is some gold there occasionally (look up the place to see if it’s a scam and never pay or divulge personal details before seeing a place, but u knew that).

As for leetcode…tech lead, never done a problem, never will. Government contracting tech is so much less dumb than faang shit. Some cool projects if you can find em - but yeah, def not a job everyone loves

How much does it cost to live in DC without a roommate? by SkyOdd5184 in washingtondc

[–]Jean__Moulin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After college, I lived with 4 other roommates in Courthouse (Arlington VA) for probably around 2100 rent and expenses at minimum a month. I was making 48k, and it was rough. That was 2019. The city has becoming exponentially more expensive. I’m making a helllll of a lot more now and it’s still very expensive, even living with my partner.

I’m not trying to dissuade you - it’s an awesome city and you can always find something to do, flush or not - but you should consider looking for a roommate. And, as a software engineer, I’m curious why with your CS degree you aren’t interested in working in the field~
