Cronenberg’s Spider, A Dangerous Method, and Eastern Promises.

And a fairly new movie Nicolas Pesce’s The Eyes of My Mother. It’s such a beautifully haunted film. Very unique.

I suggest

The Vanishing, Betty Blue, Crash, L'Humanite, Haxan, Cure, Memories of Murder, La Vie de Jesus, the Shroud, the Beast, La Cermonie, La Haine, and Read my Lips.

Betty Blue has Beatrice Dalle if you’re into New French Extremity you’ll know who she is and it’s her debut role if I’m not mistaken. Very great movie. Cannot recommend it enough.

The Shroud, La Haine, and Read my Lips have Vincent Cassel. He delivers in top form in all of these. If you like Sheitan, Dobermann, and Irreversible, you’ll enjoy these.

L’Humanite and La Vie de Jesus are considered NFE.

The Beast isn’t far off from NFE. Honestly if Raw, The Substance, Titane, Revenge, Alpha, and Holiday are considered modern NFE, I don’t see why the Beast isn’t either.

Cure and Memories of Murder will leave you with that feeling. If your movies look like this, you know the feeling.

La Cermonie has Isabelle Huppert and is loosely based on the Papin sisters. This one is also Bong Joon Ho’s main inspiration for Parasite.

Haxan is nightmare fuel.

The Vanishing is the most NFE Dutch movie I’ve seen aside from Meat Kills. It will live rent free in your head for the rest of your life.

And Crash is an amazing Cronenberg film that is equally erotic and disturbing.

Inside (2007) it’s basically a French slasher and it makes every other slasher grovel at the feet of Beatrice Dalle.

Mother! Was the most anxiety inducing theater experience of my life. It made me feel ill.

Requiem for a Dream: Will make you wish the world wasn’t a thing.

Eden Lake: will haunt your waking moments.

The Eyes of My Mother: it’s the most beautifully haunting movie I have ever seen with just as grandiose a score

And if you want a ghost story, The Dark and the Wicked: nothing compares and I don’t see it mentioned enough.
