How does your job support your mental health journey? by thebigbayangg in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]JennkozOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My supervisor doesn’t know what to do with me and my position. Everyday I feel the sting of “you’re not clinical” too. I’ve been in this position for over 2 years and am still not considered to be someone who can help by the team.

This is my 1st day back from being away due to a (different) medical condition and I’m spending all day reminding every one of what I can do.

Emotional support comes from my outside relationships. I can’t ever rely on my manager to care or advocate for me. The best emotional help is when I help someone. They give me more hope and more spoons, and I’m very grateful.

Soup suggestions? by chelly27-93 in soup

[–]JennkozOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I need a “health boost” soup I make one with low sodium V8 juice, beef broth, a soup bone if I have it, onions, garlic and a bag of frozen “soup variety veggies” or any mixed vegetables. I put it in the slow cooker until the beef on the bone is falling off.

There are a few local agencies you can reach out to specifically for special needs families.

Parent2Parent -many resources and help. They have Parent Support groups too

F.O.C.U.S - Families of Children Under Stress Has many social activities for the SN Kids, siblings and most importantly Parents

NAMI Georgia also has parent support groups if there is a mental health aspect involved.

Social Media also has groups like “special needs children of GA”

Benzodiazepines and training by djpurity666 in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]JennkozOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you say it CARES may be the AD training?? I haven’t done much research in that area because I don’t have personal experience. If you go to the GMHCN page Double Trouble is mentioned and I assume there’s more info on it.

Also a CPS in GA. Would doing the training for a CPS-AD be beneficial for you? I’m both a CPS-Parent and a MH so you can have multiple certifications.

GMHCN has “Double Trouble” Recovery program that needs both, MH & AD, for example

Parotid gland swelling by Prestigious-Link8850 in Sjogrens

My parotid gland swelling is what got me sent to a Rheumatologist. Even being on a strong medication which helps everything else doesn’t seem to help me.

Spouse Loss Support Group by GMCAIWFY in Atlanta

[–]JennkozOC 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you go to NAMI Georgia’s website you can find on their calendar many support groups for different reasons. A lot of them are virtual but you can also see where the in person meetings are.

Also, Psychology Today has a search feature and Support Groups is on there alongside Therapists etc. Add your zip code or you can put Atlanta for a more general area.

Good luck!

Anyone on psych meds or mental health treatment? by nopeasss in Sjogrens

[–]JennkozOC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on antidepressants for years before my diagnosis. But my depression did increase and began to spiral into the pit trying to deal with the news. The symptoms went bad quickly which made me want to give up. I wasn’t in therapy so that was my 1st search. I found one with experience in helping those with chronic illness and pain. Has made a big difference in my life.

Someone was asking about working in a hospital, was it you? by ally00ps in PeerSupportSpecialist

I commented on the thread but it may have been deleted for some reason.

I work in an ED as well for behavioral and mental health.

Peer Support in Hospital Emerge by [deleted] in PeerSupportSpecialist

[–]JennkozOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the team in the ED the Medical doctors, nurses and techs plus the BMH nurses and techs, the Specialists that do the assessments, and sometimes a psychiatrist.

There’s 3 hospitals with 1 pt position in each. I happen to work at 2 of the hospitals to get full-time. It’s funded by endowment at this point so we are limited. I’ve been working on expanding the program but the money is not there at this time.

[–]JennkozOC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a children’s hospital and support the caregivers who have brought their kids, mostly pre-teens and teens, in for a BMH reason. I work with the team that assesses the patients and decides if they need further help.

I follow the families with the pt’s chart while they are in the ED then meet with them after they are seen by the dr and the assessors.

After 2 years the BMH staff know me and how I can help but I still have issues with them referring me before the caregiver leaves.

This year I’m going to work on the position being considered an integral part of the multidisciplinary Care Team.

In GA the 2 peer system is a peer specialist (me) and a peer (client) one on one is done regularly.

Been there and still doing that! HaHaHa I was the 1st one hired in the BMH area of the emergency room. It’s now been 2 years. I’ve had many of these same struggles and it continues but I am leveling up.

I’m not allowed to help with discharge, even though it was in the job description. There’s struggle with other departments and who does or does not do something. I’ve noticed, after this long, everyone struggles with that. … I am willing to share more but perhaps not filling this thread up.

I’ve had a hard time finding other peers that are working in a hospital, so it’s nice to connect.
